I'm his fan since February, 2010. I have read in article about Ke$ha that once she broke into P.'s house. I thought 'He must be cool if someone wants to breake into his house'. I looked for his music on YouTube, but all i have found, were videos without music. IAfter some time, i found Kiss, Raspberry Beret, Purple Rain, Let's Go Crazy, Diamonds n Pearls and Girls n Boys. I downloaded into my phone and i was listening all evening. Then, i have fell in love. Now, i'm gettin ready to his concert on July 2,. biggrin

So evil girl, if one of us has a date,
With the undertaker, which one will it be?

And that's all she wrote. I never imagined 4 years later I'd be screaming my head off in The Forum watching him live.

BTW, I'm 20, so forgive me. I wasn't a thought in my mother's mind when he was in his "prime"

I'm sad to say that I've only been a fan since February of this year. I have always loved The Most Beautiful Girl In The World since it came out around 94 or 95. I have vivid memories of riding the bus to elementary school and hoping it would come on over the radio. At the time, I was too young to know or even care about who sang it - but I never forgot it because it was my first favorite song. Once I got older, I went out of my way to find and procure TMBGITW. However, I was still young and stupidly impressionable so because other MJ fans always talked about how much better MJ was than Prince, I never bothered to find out anything about him on my own. It seemed like a sin, or the ultimate betrayal, or something.

Anyhow, late one Saturday night I was busy procrastinating instead of writing a paper when I flipped to MTV and saw that Purple Rain was just beginning. I had seen snippets of Purple Rain before, but never paid much attention to it because I had no interest in Prince and, based on what little I'd seen and heard of him via the media, perceived him to be a strange and ridiculous man who couldn't figure out what he wanted his name to be. Well that night I decided watch it in the name oft expanding my musical horizons. I was completely entranced by his performance of The Beautiful Ones and by the end of Computer Blue, my life was changed. I couldn't believe I had willingly been missing out the integral part of musical history/greatness/genius that is Prince! In addition, when I started delving into his music (which I actually started that very night well into the next morning), I realized that it is utterly laughable to compare him to MJ. It's like comparing Beethoven or Rachmaninoff to Frank Sinatra. I mean, sure Sinatra is an icon in his own right - but Beethoven and Rachmaninoff were out and out musical geniuses! It's apples and oranges. At any rate, I've never looked back - all I regret is the time I wasted!

I'm perfectly fine comparing the two. It is not laughable to compare MJ and Prince. Different strokes for different folks.

What is laughable is likening Prince to Beethoven. Now that's just too much.

If you can figure out a way to logically compare the two of them then more power to you. As far as likening Prince to Beethoven, that was clearly not what I said - nor was it the purpose of my analogy. First of all, I compared Beethoven and Sinatra - not Beethoven and Prince... Second, I used Beethoven and Sinatra because there's obviously a huge difference in musical ability, genres, techhnique, etc., between the two of them and that difference in ability is just about as large as the difference that exists between Prince and MJ. Since you're obviously an MJ fan, you may not like to acknowledge that difference. But as an avid MJ fan myself, I can safely say that you don't have to get all prickly whenever confronted with the reality that MJ can't see Prince when it comes to vocal ability, musicianship or even raw creativity, for that matter.

Hmm I'd disagree. There's much bigger gap between Beethoven and Sinatra as far as musical ability goes, so applying Beethoven and Sinatra comparison to Prince vs. MJ analogy wouldn't make much sense. Beethoven wasn't a singer he was a composer. His music is really not about repetition of 45-second-long melody to barely fill up songs that are usually 4 minute long, which pratically, what Sinatra, MJ, and Prince are all about. Is there any musician who makes popular music these days, who can compose a 45 minute long symphony with continuous and unexpected modulation using more than 20 different instruments? nah....But I do agree Prince vs. MJ is like Apple vs Orange smile

I've been listening to his music since 2009 ish I think. I don't remember exactly how long I've been considering myself a Prince fan but it's definitely less than 6, 7 months...I listened to his hit collection album, planet earth, lotus flower, and purple rain and I still wasn't a fan but Emancipation album definitely made me a fan!!

Both of them are completely different, first of all.

I'd have to say, Michael's voice is much stronger than Prince's. Prince can scream as much as a wants, but I just prefer Michael's.

Prince obviously wins musicianship. No doubt about it.

Raw creativity...you can't compare. Both were pretty good and quite creative. Both of them could churn out songs that you never even knew they had in them. From Little Susie, to the Ballad of Dorothy Parker....both men with creative in their own little ways.

You don't have to bring up Prince by trashing Michael. I think it's unfair to both of them. Both of them worked hard to get where they got in their careers, and both of them were good at what they did. We should admire them both rather than compare them, I think. You can prefer whoever you like, but don't worship Prince at the expense of Michael. Or vice versa.

Anyways, back on track...

I have to call BS on this. Prince is my favorite, but MJ is right there at number 2 and for good reason. Realistically, how much more mature/deeper are songs like head, let's pretend we're married, dmsr, black sweat, kiss, do me baby than songs like I can't help it, why you wanna trip on me, the lady in my life, give in to me? Yes MJ couldn't do things like joy in repetition, anna steisa etc., but he was still deep in his on way; he's just not as preacy or pretentious as Prince can be. You may not have to trash MJ, but still dismissing him as some kids pop act like he's a one man backstreet boy or nsync is just as bad. NOW....back to this point on this thread....

But you seemed to be making a dig at Michael in order to bring up Prince. By saying that it's laughable, and with your Beethoven to Frank Sinatra comparison, you made it seem as if Prince was some sort of musical god that Michael couldn't touch.

And, just saying, listen to the last half of Dangerous and HIStory for raw Michael. None of that is great pop music for kids. Just saying.

Hmmm...all my life. I'm 28. I was literally 2 yrs old when Purple Rain was made.

My older sister and cousin were always playing his music.

But I didn't really realize how much I loved him until this past December when tickets went on sale for his Welcome 2 America tour.

I was driving; the radio announced that tickets were going on sale in the next hour(I'm so silly, I didn't know he was even getting ready to tour!); I got to my hair appt and told my hairdresser to WAIT while I bought tickets! I didn't tell anyone I was going until after I got MY ticket lol -- you know how folk do -- I wasn't about to mess around waiting for people and then next thing you know, tickets are sold out.

I don't go to live shows. Have never been 'into' any artist like that.

But this instinctive-had to have it-butterflies in my stomach-"what the HELL is wrong with me?"-couldn't sleep in anticipation of show-"why do I feel 15?" FEELING made me realize how important his work was to me.

I saw the love symbol stage and lost it!!!! excited Can't even tell you what seeing him in real life was like. faint

I came home from the show - found this site and joined - bought tickets to another show on the tour(brought people with me that time wink ) - and I've bought about 15 of the albums to go along with a few "Best Of" albums between Dec and now. And I WILL have them all before the end of 2011....well as many as I can find...ya'll know how hard it is to come across some of them.....

*SIGH* as I already said, I am an AVID fan of Michael's and have been for years. There is nothing that Michael has recorded that the general public has access to that I don't own. I know his entire musical history from "Big Boy" during the Steeltown record days to "Heaven Can Wait" and the rest of Invincible. So I'm well aware of his genius and I know exactly where to find raw Michael, funky Michael, rock Michael, r&b Michael, new jack swing Michael, white Michael, black Michael, or any other Michael inbetween (if u feel like I left one out). But thank you for the pointer, nontheless. At any rate, all I wanted to do in the first place was share my Prince discovery. After all, it is MY discovery for godsakes so please leave me alone to experience and express it however I feel fit!

Realistically songs like head, lets pretend, kiss, dmsr, black sweat etc aint much more deeper than the MJ songs that you listed .. However they proberbly are a wee bit more ADULT .as they are dealing sex in a way that some of them would come with a PARENTAL ADVISORY sticker that warns that the songs are not suitable for children ... Does that make them more MATURE? no ... I guess Prince lived a bit more ..so when he was singing about sex .. you knew he had done it.. MJ an sex will always be a mysterious thing ... He sang alot about girls .. but he never seemed to be interested in them .. Yeah he got married to Lisa Marrie .. but even that is mysterious ... an his kids have blonde hair an blue eyes .. an he had no interest in been with the mother .. He called himself a modern day peter pan .. an claimed to be like a child .. so i am sure that he wouldnt be offended by me saying that some of his music had a nieveness an childlike quality... This is a man who conected with children an spent most of his life befriending young boys an been around young boys .... an he claimed he did that cos he felt like a child an loved children ... so my saying that his music lacks the maturity of princes is no trashing of MJ .... Thats who he was ... Prince just seems like more grown up an adult music to me ... When I was a kid I used to love songs like BAD .. THRILLER etc .. an i was into MJ ... as I got older I got into PRINCE,SPRINGSTEEN,KINKS,CASH, etc ... an felt they were offerring more lyrically .. an kinda outgrew MJ ...... But I appreciate the maturity in HIStory etc .... mj is mysterious ... he sang alot about love an sex .. the way you make me feel .. dangerous sex .. etc ... but where did it come from ... an who was he singing about ?

whenever i want to hear some new music ...i make some - prince '99'

no, MJ wouldn't have even required you to be female nor anywhere near the age of consent.

ANYWAYS.... lol

Oh, sorry, I was speaking to someone else. I should have clarified. Just saying though...

no, MJ wouldn't have even required you to be female nor anywhere near the age of consent.

I became a fan after my brother requested that my mom play Purple Rain in the car after driving home from Tae Kwon Do lessons. He had no idea who Prince was, but thought the album cover looked interesting enough. Needless to say we were both floored.

Afterwards, we both searched for his music online and bought pretty much all of his albums used from Amazon.com. biggrin I also remember hitting up the NPG Music Club and getting some really awesome songs back when that place was still alive and kicking. (Some examples being: "Silver Tongue" and "Underneath the Cream.")

All that happened in 2003. I'm 23 years old now, but have yet to see him live. If he comes back to Minneapolis, I have vowed that I will be correcting that mistake! (I live in Iowa.)

I am 19, I became a fan since 2010 March. I remember someone on FB posted the clip of "Purple Rain". I watched it and thought that the man is genius. Of course I heard about Prince before, but not much, as here in my country nobody really cares about him. I knew only several songs like "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World", "Purple Rain", "Black Sweat", "Kiss". So I was getting deeper into his music and in November 2010 went to Rome for his show. Now I will attend 2 more shows in Poland and Norway. "Life Can Be So Nice" with Prince smile lol

There's joy in repetition...
