I think they're going to soak as much money as they can out of us vinyl fans first. We might see vinyl reissues of the post-PR albums before we see digital remasters of anything. It wouldn't surprise me if the entire catalog has already been digitally archived by now, but they're waiting for the right time to release the digital versions. But your guess is as good as mine.

Soak? There is a very small % of people who buy vinyl.....extremely small.

I know I know... i have it... or I had it. I think that as one of the many things i gave away not too long ago.

I'd like to have the poster framed, but I can only imagine what the guy at the framing shop would think, lol. It would be interesting to have it in the bathroom, heh. might get some strange looks from house guests!

i'm on Side 2 of 'Controversy' now, on 'Private Joy'. Man, these really do sound fantastic. So much better than the little tinny CDs. I need to rip these and plug them into my iPod, they will be a huge improvement over what I have on their now.

bathrooms may be a poor place to hang it. they tend to get too humid. Could damage the poster. But they sell poster frames at shops. Maybe try a Micheal's craft store?

Good point; probably just hang it in my loft, where i have my music set up. I could just buy a frame, true... i usually have them professionally done but it might be simpler just to try Michaels (and cheaper!)

But we actually buy the vinyl, since you can't download it (yes, I know there are vinyl rips on the internet, but they usually don't sound as good, and the sort of person who would buy a vinyl reissue is likely to care a great deal about the sound). If the remasters were on CD, how many people would actually buy them, as opposed to downloading them from an "unofficial" source without paying for them? I expect that's what WMG and Prince are trying to figure out (or arguing over). Lots of people bought the Beatles remasters, but that is a different core demographic. IMO, Prince isn't going to sell the crown jewels unless he thinks he will make a small fortune from doing it.

I've done that w/ my Eurythmics albums and 12" singles. I have them going chronologically (each one in an individual frame) across the wall of my loft. I'd need a much bigger space to try that w/ all my Prince vinyl, heh. Would be nice, though!

can't really gush enough about these. They really do sound terrific. Very rich and full and brimming with energy.

Another way of looking at it is this: if these albums were released as digital remasters along with the vinyl, I would have bought the digital remasters (on CD or on iTunes) and passed on the vinyl, since I already have the original records on vinyl. But now they've got me to pay for the vinyl (since there is no other way to get the remastered music), and they'll get me to pay again for the digital remasters if they ever come out, so I can listen to them at the gym or in my car. I don't think I'm alone. In fact, I doubt there is anyone who will buy these vinyl reissues but later pass on the digital remasters, except for people who wouldn't pay for the digital remasters in any event. So if WMG and Prince make any money from these vinyl reissues at all, it's all upside for them. That's why I would expect them to wait until the vinyl sales have dried up before releasing anything digital.

The other thing is that they digital music providers are looking at new formats for digital downloads that would sound better.

An artist actually made these comments 2 me a while ago. Your post reminded me of the conversation. They also stated that they really missed the liner notes and other aspects that come along with with albums.

It would be surprising if new vinyl issues were not remastered. The engineers have to remaster from tapes in order to create new stampers, unless they saved the old ones. You can tell from the different writing in the deadwax that they used different stampers than they did for the original pressings. What BGM confirmed is that (1) they used the original tapes for the remastering, (2) Bernie himself did the remastering, and (3) it was done in January of this year.

On side 3 of 1999 now. Jammin' to "Automatic". Should have been a big single in the US.

I still don't get the hatred for "Free". Have always loved this track.

And onto International Lover.

Been very cool to listen to these 3 landmark albums back to back to back in such great sound quality. Definitely worthwhile.

Well, it's stealing if you don't.

I finally had time to listen to my original pressing of Dirty Mind and the reissue back-to-back. After listening to both, the difference to me is obvious. The original pressing sounds like you are listening to a record. The reissue sounds like Prince is playing in your living room. I don't know what Bernie did differently this time around, but it is definitely an improvement to my ears.
