better this than another thread about pictures of the back of Prince's left knee. at least it's a discussion about his music. and a fairly decent one at that. the predictable snotty douchery of certain orgers notwithstanding.

It's quite pathetic that anyone has to say that in (or what's supposed to be) the music (and More) forum. How many threads are actually about the music? sad

I totally agree, I wish some of the nonsense thread would be deleted

Reading thru this one, overall you can just feel the love 4 this album and how it makes people feel, nice and breezy, waves, airy, sunny/sunshine are words I've read so far used 2 describe this album/era I'll add intimate

So anything that doesn't match up with ur opinion should be locked?

If you happened to have a brain, you wouldn't have asked that.

If someone doesn't like an album, so be it. But if that someone is so desperate for attention that starts a thread asking what's so great about one of the best albums recorded by ANY musician and for worse blames her dislike of it on black and white pictures it's clear that that someone doesn't even have HALF a brain.

The fact of this thread being open is an insult to all of us.

[Edited 3/11/11 5:11am]

youre an insult to all of us, take the freaking stick out of your butt, you grump. sad

and im not looking for a reason to dislike the album. i was just thinking that maybe that was why.

you people are biting my head off over everything i say, just because i disagree with you. and everyone thinks im just trying to get attention.. i said, im not trying to make myself known as the person who doesnt like parade. i just figured id bring it up for discussion, but half the responses in this thread are rude. but i guess i walked into it, and this is a message board after all, so i dunno.

Vitriol is an ass who doesn't really know how to communicate with people..but that's expected from him.

But I do think that using the black and white imagery as an excuse not to like the songs is a bit of a stretch. Like I said if you've really given the songs a good listen over time and still don't like them..that's fine..it's definately not everyone's taste.

The look of that era is one of the most loved by fans because it was so stylish. The film UTCM is crticized to some extent but most agree that the look of the film was one the best parts of it. I would have loved it in color myself because I personally I adore the film but he wanted the feel of a certain era so that's why he did that way.

I remember when I first got into Prince's music, 'Parade' wasn't an album that really grabbed my attention, I never listened to it voluntarilly and always skipped the tracks whenever they came on .. that is untill I thought I'd dedicate an evening to listening to the entire LP on repeat, all ears. I wanted to see what the fuss really was all about.

I turned up my speakers, dimmed the lights and with a little 'assistance' - I went on the most amazing trip I've ever been on, I'd never heard anything like it.

Honestly, you just need to open your mind and give it another try .. 'Parade' is pure Prince brilliance.

I hope you get to hear what everyone else in this thread does because you're truly missing out on something special! fallinluv

I got into with headphones, Father hated P. music
After being bowled over by the 3 previous albums my inexperienced ear could'nt get into this.
My older brother said it was crap.

I only gradually got into it with the help of the televised tour and the accompanying film.

Now among a bunch of what I consider phenomenal albums, it's often my favourite.

Step 1: if you've got the cd, rip it to iTunes/mediaplayer. Step 2: replace Kiss with Love or Money Step 3: Enjoy

biggrin

I find Kiss to sound completely different than the rest of the album and a bit out of place. I am guessing it is because Mazarati and producer David Z drastically reworked the song. I Love Love or Money and would be much happier if it was in its place.

Parade Outtakes

Tracklist:
01. Little Girl Wendy's Parade 2:07
"Christopher Tracy's Parade" was originally recorded as this outtake. The song is basically the same but with a reference to Wendy's guitar (rhymes with "car" in the next line) as opposed to Tracy's piano. Incidentally, Prince sings "little girl Wendy's parade" in "Kiss" right before the third verse.

Everyone come behold little girl Wendy's parade
The show will proceed unless it should rain strawberry lemonade

02. New Position 2:16 Originally from the Controversy era

03. I Wonder U 1:33

04. Under The Cherry Moon 2:51

05. There's Others Here With Us 2:38
*Prince's experimental frame of mind is evident on this track, a dark, strange number with a stark instrumentation made up of tribal-like drumming and various sound effects, such as someone weeping. Prince's vocals are harsh and confused, matching the nightmarish lyrics mentioning death and suicide. Recorded during the Parade sessions, it confirms Prince's belief the spirit lives on after death.

It's strange how your mind works when Love is in power
One learns 2 care and appreciate a flower
What makes others want 2 change your mind?
All the things I've seen, life is so sublime

06. Life Can Be So Nice 3:08

07. Sometimes It Snows In April 6:41

08. Old Friends 4 Sale 3:30
*This slow bluesy classic is one of Prince's most autobiographical songs in which he sings about Steve Fargnoli, Wendy Melvoin, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and the late bodyguard Chick Huntsberry. A somber mood is established from an eerie slightly discordant synth with a piano the main accompaniment. Recorded during the Parade sessions, two versions exist, with one including Clare Fischer's orchestra. It was revised in 1991.

The sun set in my heart this afternoon
4 2 friends of mine got stuck in the snow
In Uptown when winter's alarmin',

This song I originally heard a few times on 104 WDKX back in 85, it was played as a PROMO. I really believe Prince might have released it as such, instead of it being 'leaked'
I had it on tape the same time I added the Black album boot to when it was 'leaked' to the underground. I love(d) this song, it's so personal, so much feeling and history behind it versus the version released on the Vault cd which is so overworked/destroyed impersonal and just not enjoyable. Like Hello, Old Friends 4 Sale is recounting some experiences that happened near the end at the end of the Purple Rain era/tour. His 1st real move toward a jazz feel. Piano, bass, drums with use of the brush and some strings.

Old Friends 4 Sale
Get em while their still hot
Watch out they'll kiss U till they get what U got
And they'll show U the friends that their not
Old Friends 4 Sale

09. All My Dreams 7:12

Welcome, this is where I live
This is where I dream my dreams

10. Girls & Boys 5:37

11. Love Or Money 4:10 Sung in Prince, not Camille, voice

Nothing comes 4 free now
If U want 2 be with me now
What's it gonna be now?

12. Heaven 7:04
*12. Heaven (recorded in France summer '84), this whimsical track was recorded in May of 1985 but was never placed on any configuration of Parade. Prince plays the main "carnivalesque" theme on the organ, alternating with a different figure, played on synth sounding like a harp. The lyrics reflect Prince's belief that heaven can be a place on earth.

Heaven will be here on earth
If we just try 2 love

- An Honest Man Complete instrumental version of the song, from Under the Cherry Moon movie & an accapella lyrical version

- Neon Telephone Parade outtake later given to Three OClock 3:52

Sometimes her pride is like a big tall building
It hides the street that leads 2 a sweet mystery

How can anyone in this thread hate on Kiss? It's one of the most deliciously catchy, feel-good pop songs in all of music history.

I've always listened to music from this album, but just everyday I've been putting on a Parade playlist and just taking it all in. In my opinion just like PR music, the Parade music is also yeeeaars ahead of it's time, And even though I know the year it was made the music 2 me just can never be considered 'dated'.

That Christopher Tracey's Parade is actually a great opener, and it actually colors the album starting out, because the sound and lyrical descriptions are anything but black n white

I'm always stunned PARADE is so much better when I play it, than it is in my head. When I think of the tracks, I sing the choruses in my head and it's nothing special.

When I actually hear the songs, they're so much more.

This is exactly it!!! When I think about what album I wanna hear, it's never Parade - but when I accidentally have it on, I remember how wonderful it is. It's masterpiece in part comes from the fact that it must be enjoyed as a full album - and listened to rather than remembered to be appreciated.

The year was 1986.

The music that was out at the time was mostly Prince-style-copy cats...people trying to emulate the MPLS synth sound that

Prince made popular during Purple Rain. Even members of the Jackson family were rockin those fluffy shirts and

coats worn during the PR days that look sort of Vampire-Lestat-Meets-Lita-Ford.

Music was....safe... boring....poppy... people were layering their sounds with synths, drum machines, etc.

It all sounded mostly the same.

PARADE was so unlike anything that was out there, and so unlike anything out now.

Most newcomers to the Prince world don't really get just how insanely re-inventive Prince was then.

There was a time we just took for granted that Prince's forthcoming release would sound nothing

like the albums he released before. Every album came not just with a different set of color

schemes, stage props, haircuts, and outfits---it came with a different sound. And, often the sound

was a hybrid or mesh of things we'd never heard before in Pop Music.

PARADE solidified this. It was so wildly different than his previous material, it often made

me scratch my head when I first listened to it.

Essentially, it's been said before, but if you like the first 45 seconds of the album, you'll

love the entire thing. If not, it's a crap shoot.

The minimalism of KISS really, really, really stood out on radio. I remember they day

I was listening to the weekly top 40 countdown, and KISS actually knocked Manic Monday (another Prince song)

off the top perch. lol

It's a great, uneven, strange little album And at 41 minutes, one you can listen to without

having to devote a great deal of time.

You just hit the nail on the head. We took it for granted.

Kiss almost could have been that B-side single that Blew Up, like Erotic City, (even though Kiss was HUGE)

My faVorite is Mountains too, when I heard the ending of the album cut I said 2 myself "there has to be a long version 2 this one)

Mountains I Wonder U & Sometimes It Snows In April are my top 3 from the album
