Even if they are not available in Europe, it will still be easy to track them down.

Yeah, but if I have to import these from USA/ outside Europe, I have to pay toll fee and tax fee then.

Understood.

wonder if they'll include the posters? (at least the dirty mind one. not sure if there was one in 1999).

what's the significance of the weight of the vinyl. is 180 a big diff. from the original weight?

It's pretty sure it is to do with sound quality.

The heavier the vinyl, the better the sound.

Don't think I'll bother. I got the 180 gram Purple Rain and it doesn't sound noticeably different to my original (and oft-played) 1984 version. I love my vinyls, but repressings with all this 'back on black' and 180 gram blah blah makes little difference in so many cases. The Metallica repressings up to Master of Puppets sound positively awful, even.

Some DO sound better, natch, but not enough to make rebuying (at $35 for 1999, for example!) an attractive idea if you have the original releases in good condition.

I still haven't played my vinyl remaster of Purple Rain, but this does make me think. Albums are mastered to sound best on the prevailing format of the day. Before CDs, all albums were mastered to get optimal sound quality on vinyl. When CDs became popular, the back-catalog of every record company's albums was transferred to CD. Most of those original transfers didn't sound great because they took master tapes intended for vinyl and used them for CDs, which have an entirely different set of dynamics--hence the need for "remastering" so that albums originally mastered for analog vinyl sound good on digital CDs as well.

With that in mind, I don't totally understand the purpose of taking an album that was mastered to sound great on vinyl and remastering it to be pressed on vinyl again.

I just checked my Purple Rain Rhino remaster and it doesn't have the poster, so I doubt Controversy will have the infamous shower/crucifix poster. The Japanese SHM-CD reissues did have a scaled-down version of it, which was sweet!

These are useful for those of us who never bought the originals on vinyl. My first Prince albums were all bought on cassettes, which I no longer have.

I wonder if this will help WB to test how big the market might be for the CD remasters that we're all waiting for. If these sell well relative to other vinyl reissues, that could indicate a strong market for the CD remasters. I still think that the ultimate release of the remasters will come only when WB is able to offer Prince enough money to make him think it's worth it.

I wonder if the post-Purple Rain albums will be next. Seems like it would make sense to at least release vinyl reissues of ATWIAD, Parade, and SOTT. I know that you can still buy the originals but it's getting harder to find them sealed, and I have learned not to trust some of the sellers on eBay and Amazon Marketplace.

How the frak do you manage to misspell a five-letter-word that is in the frakking image you're posting. And then not correct it?

According to this website, the Controversy LP reissue will include the original poster:

http://www.musicdirect.co...duct/90423

There is also some more detail on the mastering, which was apparently done "from the original tapes."

I'm definitely looking forward to these.

Anyone know the difference between the older vinyl and the 180g reissues? I happen to like the sound from vinyl better than cd's, but they're not easy to load in my car. wink

This will be perfect. I can delete my cdr files of those albums and copy them from 180 g vinyl (as my copies are scratched up and ruined for life).

Happens all the time though, and yeah, it bugs me too.

Another thing that bugs me is people putting an "s" on the end too.

Fact: The plural of "Vinyl" is "Vinyl".

Just like the plural of Sheep is Sheep, not Sheeps.

Maybe? Or maybe the guys from the podcast.

In any case the law says 35 years.

And you can never ever believe what Prince says in this respect until you see it.

That's what the law says, but since that law went into effect right around the time of his first contract signing, it's difficult to know what the specifics of his case are. And there's also the fact contracts after that one may have changed the terms set out in the first one, right? Hell, for all we know, he could have signed away the rights to those albums for another 35 years right up until the last contract he signed with them.

Anyway, it is interesting that he said he owned Dirty Mind already. And that WB are doing a new pressing of it on vinyl. But it's also interesting that they are using a much more recent picture of Prince that they don't own to promote it.

It could very well be that they've worked something out on some level.

He said it himself tho' that the rights would revert to him after 35 years. Some 10 years ago, in a sort of npgonline interview answering fans questions. You are right however, that we will never really know all the specifics. Unless we are given all the contracts and told about all all the ins and outs, we are basically left to what we do know, which besides the law, are standard industry practices and what he has said himself about it. Enough to make a reasonable assumption, but not a great deal of information. We can't forget either that the guys from the podcast may have interpreted his words not entirely correct or may have gotten a little bit carried away. Or that Prince was playing with them. You know, to make people talk, which may get something moving...
