MTV. I was always mesmerized by Little Red Corvette and Kiss. It’s probably why I’m gay.

I visited my aunt in SC and she was a huge Prince fan. I saw Purple Rain there and fell in love. She gave my cousins the picture to her Purple Rain album and they hung it on their wall. I would stare at the photo all the time. eek And I was only eight!

"You need to laydown and let me show you how we do this thing up in funky town. From the heart of Minnesota here come the purple Yoda guaranteed to bring the dirty new sound! Come on, now!"

Yeah, I would be lying if I didn't say MTV, initially.

Oh yeah, and tapes from bargain bins. They were trying to get rid of that format altogether during the first half of the 90s, so you could find all kinds of stuff for nothing. Library played a big part in it too - I could get most of his records from there (they didn't have the early albums though). Prince really wasn't the type of an artist that you "should" have listened to where I lived back then. Everyone I ever spoke to about him were just taken back by his image, but I just couldn't get enough of the guy. Now, when I started reciting his lyrics to my friends things could get a bit awkward....

The greatest thing about Prince back then was how into his own music and career he was back then - he was full of dedication and had an ambition to move on artistically with each album. So it wasn't hard to get really engaged about him and his music as a fan.

I don't remember exactly how old I was, but I do remember the song that did it....Let's Pretend We're Married. My parents specifically told me not to listen to that album...you know the way God specifically told Adam not eat from the infamous tree. Well, I had been in the basement adjusting the volume on the stereo trying to figure out just how low it could go with me still being able to hear it. And I played the song. The next day, I had asked my aunt "what does it mean to have the taste FUCKED out of your mouth". And the rest is history.

I was 3 in the 80's and knew when doves cry from the video and radio and I would die for you, and slightly remember seeing batdance. I may have seen kiss too but it was fuzzy.

Partyman on a various artists hits tape.

It was sooo different and stood out from the other samey pop songs.

Then I played the Grafitti Bridge tape to death during my paper rounds!

This question cones up every few months or so...

I liked a song or two when I was in jr high and high school (late 70s/ 80s), but nothing big....

Sophomore year of college, I had a crazy, obsessed roommate who collected bootleg cassettes. She played Prince ALL THE TIME. After a while, I started to hear things that weren't on the radio. I decided he wasn't so bad after all. lol

Then Sign 'O' the Times came out... I heard that song on the radio and flipped! omg That was the first album I can truly say I loved.

After that, I went back and filled in the ones from before and listened to them with a "new ear" and have bought every one since. music

Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

yeahthat If you are over 35, and grew up in motor city MOJO is the reason you loved Prince. I feel for the young people of today. What MOJO did on the radio was just so special,no DJ today even with XM, could or would do what that man did every night....ain't nobody like you... I mean come on. Just imagine turning on your radio at night and hearing PRINCE music for 2 or 3 HOURS straight. Uncut, album versions, remixes, extended mixes, b-sides etc.

I've been with Prince since 1977.....forever. Soft and Wet. Then through Right ON! magazine.....Thank you Prince. thanks MOJO8-)

first heard him when 1999 made the top 30 in the uk charts back in january 83...thought it was a great dance song...then i saw him on entertainment usa tv programme when little red corvette was climbing the us chart in early 83 and i remember thinking he was a great performer and the song was very good.....then a year later when when doves cry came out in 84....that was it...the dj was praising him and the song so much that i taped it and listened to it closely because it did sound weird then i realised the brilliance of it and since then ..i have spend thousands on the little shit for the last 27 years.....

I was surprised a couple of years later ,when i couldnt find the tape i found the album & played it, when i heard Darling Nikki, I thought hey that wasnt on the tape!!!

Yeah, i asked my mum what masterbating with a magazine was & what devices were!!!!

Mmmmmm Let's just say she wasn't ready for that!!!! lol lol lol lol

The Housequake performance on the SOTT Live DVD, two years ago. I became pretty much obsessed after that.

You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

I got into Prince basically out of curiosity because I had heard about Prince as a music artist but I had never really listened to any of his songs. It was in 2008, I was 16, turning 17, at the time and I just decided, that I might as well listen to a few songs to see what he was like. And I guess I became an instant fan because ever since then, for the past three years all I've listened to is Prince music, or music by associated artists.
