My first favorite is usually Sign o' The Times (although Lovesexy used to be in that position)

Hate to say it, but for me, lovesexy was the time that Prince albums stopped being events and the time when I stopped being wowed by him, and also the time when I could go through more than a couple songs without being crazy about one of them.

Really? You thought Lovesexy jumped the shark? That honor belongs to Batman, and even that disc had at least 5 strong tracks on it.

Lovesexy's not my favorite, but come one. Maybe you have bad memories beacuse you bought the CD and couldn't skip trax. Or was it the cover? Anna Stesia, Dance On, Positivity, Lovesexy, Glam Slam...Alphabet Street. Where's the problem?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume you also missed that tour, because that shit was redicuous, and if you experienced it, you'd never take a shit on Lovesexy.

wrong on just about every count, I saw the tour, he was ever improving on the live front, and I don't dislike the album, just for me personally it wasn't as good as the previous few. Some of the songs were good, let's see, two are in love, alphabet street long version was good, anna stesia was strong, positivity was good, the ones that bring the album down are Dance On, Glam Slam, I also hated the "spooky electric" shit, maybe I was just starting to mature and that cryptic shit which I loved as a teen started to seem contrived as an adult. Prince was getting a more dense sound, and at the time, I thought that was progress but I don't now. His music was getting complex but it was disguising the fact that the songs weren't well crafted. Just my opinion. Not a bad album, just not as good as his best.

the FU was attributed to p for atwiad in the musician article, if i have time, i'll check out Poplife to see if it was quoted for parade, if so, one of the writers got the two confused.

The 'FU' thing was definitely about ATWIAD - it's from a live radio interview Prince did with the Electrifying Mojo in Detroit (It can probably be found through the usual channels).

The Parade quote in that Musician mag is, "Parade was a disaster. Aside from 'Kiss', there's nothing on it that I'm particularly proud of."

I couldn't believe it, either. neutral

I don't doubt the FU/atwiad thing, Poplife had some other typos in an otherwise stellar, one of the best bios on Prince to ever come out. Still, I could be wrong, I'll have to check.

Quick update.

The first documentary - Metallica's "Master Of Puppets" is going out tomorrow, and each documentary will go out in the last Sunday of each month. So "Parade" is scheduled for either 24th of April, but there's a likelihood that might get pushed to the 1st May as the 24th is such an early date for a Sunday.

Press release about the series:

http://www.newsonnews.net...lbums.html

Xfm site for the series:

http://www.xfm.co.uk/news...resents-25

There's some clips of the Metallica one on there that is airing tomorrow.

We've just interviewed UK DJ Bobby Friction who is known as a celebrity Prince fan here in the UK. We're also setting up interviews with a few people from Prince's camp that we've been in contact with but I can't give any names yet as the interviews haven't been recorded as of yet.

I'm excited that the "Parade" album will get some attention on your show!

Here's one topic to consider mentioning; I had written more but my computer erased the rest:

-- Prince had a side-project called The Family, who released one album in 1985. The Family album is sort of a template for what Prince would do on Parade. The Family was the first Prince project to include Eric Leeds on saxophone and Clare Fischer's orchestral arrangements. It also marked a return to Prince using more live drumming instead of the Linn LM1 drum machine. Image-wise, The The Family's look and image was influenced by old-fashioned Hollywood glamour. All of these elements would reappear on Parade.

Wanted you guys to be the first to know smile

I'm making a 1 hour radio documentary about "Parade" to be aired on one of the biggest UK radio stations, XFM, in April. It's part of a series of documentaries called "25", where each monthly episode focuses on a classic album from 1986.

We're kicking off the series in January with Metallica's "Master Of Puppets". Other albums we're covering include "Licensed To Ill" by the Beastie Boys, "Black Celebration" by Depeche Mode, "Brotherhood" by New Order, "The Queen Is Dead" by The Smiths to name a few.

XFM airs on FM in London and Manchester, on digital radio across the rest of the UK, and can be listened to online worldwide via their website.

Obviously the key to making a great radio documentary is finding that balance between exploring the album in depth so that fans like ourselves will enjoy it, but without going so deep that you end up turning off casual listeners or people who know nothing about the album or Prince. I'm trying to hit that mid point dead on.

Don't have any other information to share at present, but, if there's anything in particular about the album that you guys would like to see covered, please do let me know and I'll take a note of it.

Thanks guys! I'm really excited about doing this, and I hope to make something that you all can enjoy! I'll be sure to keep this thread updated as we continue to work on it smile

Can't wait! biggrin

Just wanted to say how I absolutely love 'Do U Lie?' and 'Anotherloverholenyohead', absolute classics.

What definitely needs to be mentioned in the documentary is the 'kiss' music video. It is the greatest pop video ever made. Its a very rare thing; a great performance video for one of the greatest songs ever written. Every shot just seems so creative and artistic; full of panache, wit and flow. I can recall how when everyone first saw this, it was all 'Man, that guy is sooo cool'. And boy, has he never looked cooler. No fancy special effects or cheesey graphics, just great lighting, dancing and swagger. Genius.

Awesome Militant - I'm sure you'll do a great job.

The great thing about Parade was how it came to be and how it was recorded. Many people wrote off this album as the soundtrack to OTCM and as such expected another Purple Rain style soundtrack. I like to think of it more as an album of great songs that were used for a film rather than the other way round.

It still rates as one of my all time fave P albums.

Be sure you share your doco with us all when it's done.

Sounds Awesome cool

Good luck with it!

Could be great if you could air 'There's Others Here With Us', it's just a unique track, showing a different side of Prince.

This is not a sarcastic response, but I'm interested as to why your radio station is regarding this as a "classic" album?

It didn't hit the number one spot either side of the Atlantic, it sold 2 million copies (US and UK combined) and only spawned one top 10 song with 'Kiss'.

Granted, media sales do not define a "classic", but I have never heard this album been referred to in this way as I have Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain or SOTT.

Perhaps you'd care to shed some light on how it was selected?

Re-read the original post to see why 1999, Purple Rain, or SOTT aren't featured. razz

I see what you mean, but please re-read my post. I already knew it's because they are focussing on 1986.

The website says "a documentary series looking at 12 seminal albums celebrating 25 years of ground-breaking music".

My post is questionning the definition of Parade being a "classic".

I think that Prince was still quite a popular person in 1986 and he was very present in the media. I would say that Parade is a classic merely by association if not by its sales. The fact it does house a #1 hit and some not-so-badly charting singles ("Mountains" and "Girls & Boys") is also a good indicator.

In the end, the album garners immediate praise today if not at the time of its release and that's what is important. Parade is almost universally hailed on this site alone as being one of Prince's best albums of all time.
