These recordings are only available to download, they are not available on cd. However, each download is provided with high quality artwork to enable you to burn to cd and print the artwork. There are many, many factors involving the legality of sharing unauthorized recordings. The copyright owner is more apt to go after the distributer of such materials and not the receiver - if they were to take any action at all. Peer-to-peer service sites generally put every user on the "distributer" list, as the process involves back-and-forth sharing of files, or bits of files. A straight download from a Rapidshare or MegaUpload link can be considered a very reasonably safe way to get these works without worry of repercussions.

Most of the free-trade labels will not include any music on a release that is in-print or readily available from the artist in the same form. The idea is that fans would (and should) go through the proper channels to obtain all their music so that the artist receives compensation. It's the live and unreleased material that make up the majority of free bootlegs. They're still bootlegs, so a line or two have been crossed along the way, but if the musician decided tomorrow to release the same material, this conversation would be unnecessary.

Free-trade labels put "Free. Do not pay for unauthorized releases." on the artwork because no money is supposed to be exchanged for something they don't actually own in the first place. The folks who put out these bootlegs are fans at the very core, and basically stewards of an artist's legacy who enjoy the thrill of sharing something they care a lot about.

I was in Antwerp and left with the exact same idea. I came with zero expectations (I'm an oldschool fan) and was blown away. This was for me the best surprise of the year.
