Sananda's music has always been really DEEP/intellectual lyrically (not every song but for the most part) and he has always been unwilling to compromise his art... If you look at his 1993 interview on Arsenio Hall he was already saying back then how after the success of "Introducing The Hardline" he could have chosen to go the path of pop star and keep churning out the hits but instead he chose to be true to his artistic vision and come out with "Neither Fish Nor Flesh." Some people would criticize that as sabotaging your career but if he came out with the Hardline part 2 I'm sure he would be criticized for being a pop star and not being an artist...Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I think he did the right thing by following his artistic vision.

In my opinion, I don't think Prince would be scared of anyone. Prince is a genius and he is more than capable of doing anything he wants. MJ, Prince, and Sananda are all geniuses and everything else is just a matter of which flavor you prefer.

I didn't become a Sananda fan until '93 but in looking back at footage from the 80's (and from what I remember of seeing him in the 80's), I could totally see how MJ might have felt threatened by Sananda. Back in the 80's I think Sananda's look kinda sorta resembled MJ in a very vague way (in other words, they didn't really look alike but I can see how the average person might look at them and put them in the same category).... Sananda's "Hardline" album was a HUGE hit and had quite a few singles that rose to the top of the charts. On top of that Sananda was writing all his songs, he had/has an amazing voice, and he plays instruments.

Now whether you think MJ is more talented or Sananda is besides the point, I'm just saying that it's very obvious to see how it's possible that MJ perceived this new, young, incredibly talented rising star as a threat. And yes Sananda has often said or inferred that MJ definitely played a role in thwarting Sananda's career because he was a threat and I definitely believe that. Not saying Sananda could have been as big as MJ because there is only one Michael Jackson and like it or not he is the most famous pop star ever all around the world. But I can see how Sananda may have been screwed... I mean "Neither Fish Nor Flesh" and "Symphony or Damn" have great singles on there.... SOD has "She Kissed Me" and "Delicate".... Yet I remember reading that Sananda said he had to personally finance the "Vibrator" tour himself and he has written many times about all the bullshit he had to deal with from the record companies who wanted to keep him contained in the "soul singer" category.

At the end of the day, they are all geniuses and I'm glad Sananda has stuck to his artistic vision cuz I love his music.

And regarding him being cocky, yeah I agree, he was cocky as hell back in the day, but if you were 25 and had the looks and the talent and the money and the success that he got at such a young age, I'm sure you would be pretty cocky too... I know I would. And let's not forget that Prince has ALWAYS been very cocky. You gotta be extremely cocky and confident to be able to do it on that level.

Agreed. I've given his recent shit a chance but it's just lacking to me.

I peeped that new "Ballad of LeBron & Kobe" download he had out and not only was the song dull, the whole idea was too.....the man who wrote so many classics is so bored that he's writing about basketball players now? Yawn.

I'm sure it'll show up in the string of random words that he's named himself any day now. The more words he adds to it, the more obscure he gets.

Francesco is not random. He chose this name when he married his loved wife Francesca in the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi and got baptised there. His mother's name is Frances and he named his newborn son Francesco too.

it's a made up name in the first place, so anything he throws in there is random, as far as a stage name.

This is what i brought up in my post, im glad you addressed this. I had heard rumors about MJ and Trent but no details.

This thread should be moved to Non-Prince and really renamed 'MICHAEL JACKSON'S FEAR OF TERRENCE TRENT DARBY DURING THE LATE 80'S AND EARLY 90'S'

Thats where the actual story is.

Id like to hear more.

Funny I heard the same story of a Sony Artist being concerned over TTD - BUT that artist was revealed as George Michael who was concerned that Sony US would only push a few UK artists and at the time both TTD and GM were cracking the US market.

For the record, Terence has been complimentary about both P and MJ yet not so nice in comments about George Michael.

TTD is American unless he's given up his citizenship.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I have no idea what Prince thought of TTD but TTD is one of the most tragic spoiling of a career than i've ever witnessed. He had incredible talent and his first four albums promised a musical career that could equal Prince's in terms of quality (though not in quantity), and his talent as a composer/arranger/musician was waaaay beyong Michael Jackson's or George Michael's. I just don't understand what happened to him that made him lose his musical edge after the late 90's. Being a now independant artist, he could have done whatever he thought of without having to care about being "commercial", and instead of going wilder he just became another generic black rock artist sad

Sorry, TTD could not touch MJ. Hell neither can Prince. Both Prince and MJ are like two separate candles lit, and one can never blow out the flame of the other. Heck I'm sure that TTD would even tell you that.

WHAT?!!! (And that's just for the lousy mixed metaphor!)

Prince is clearly superior artistically to Michael Jackson. That takes nothing away from Mr. Jackson.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

TTD's first two albums were release through the UK and Terence was most definitely a UK artist at the time. It wasn't until 1993 and the release of Symphony or Damn that he relocated to the USA where he lived until 2001.

During the era of his greatest success, and the time that this original post referenced he was indeed seen and recorded and handles as a UK based artist.

^^ Let's not drag this chat into an MJ V Prince discussion - they are redundant and pointless.

He was still an American regardless. Nothing you've posted changes that.

I'm not trying to change his citizenship, just inform that during that period TTD was seen as a UK artist - that was his home base and that was the home base the record company promoting him. In the same way that many US artists don't get pushed as hard in the UK, so too it works in reverse (eg Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue).

That's all I was stating.

On "Miles 2 Nowhere",song: "Funky Man - Land Of 1000 Dances" P says to Levi: "sing something, i don't care what, sing something".

After that Levi sings: " if you let me staa-aay..."

I believe Prince covered "If You Let Me Stay" just last year also, at the concert he did at Paisley Park, the one where you could get tickets on Lotusflow3r.

TTD has ended up being somewhat shy and introverted, sadly.

The mofo' did a concert or two out front of INXS in 1999 and it was the absolute bomb with him singing those great tracks like Suicide Blonde, Kick, Never Tear Us Apart and Listen Like Thieves. He was offered the gig full time but, allegedly, thought he was too shy for that type of role and knocked them back.

If only - just imagine the great stuff that would have come out a collaboration between TTD and the Farriss brothers.....

Going from memory - in the 90's book neo manifesto there's a list of P's fav songs and one of them is 'Let her down easy' by TTD, it's a beautiful song.

Man, this guy was fucking great. What the hell happened...

Wildcard was his last physical release - he has released digital albums since then via his website.

Still producing some interesting stuff, but not as good as the first 4 TTD albums.

Terrence Trent D'Arby's debut album is fantastic.......

I don't like the rest...... well "Delicate" was ok,

but he's only released 1 great album imo afaik.....

Prince had nothing to fear from this guy,

I disagree with those who thinks Terence has made better singles (or albums) than Prince.

eek lol

I always thought that that song was about Prince, somehow. Same goes for Lauryn Hill's Superstar.

That never struck you? "But man, she's just - seventeen".

Sananda Francesco Maitreya, the artist formerly known as Terrence Trent D'Arby, was at an afterparty at Paisley Park for a concert Prince did at Glam Slam in Jan 1992. After a couple hours of the party Prince and the NPG took to a rehearsal area and jammed and TTD grabbed a guitar and got on stage with them and strung a few chords and Prince just looked at him like WTF. He proceeded to set the guitar down and walked off with his tail between his legs. lol

TTD joined him out at Paisley in the fall of 1995, after a TTD show at First Avenue. Prince was at the First Ave show then headed out to the Park where he played til about 4:30 am, and was just winding down when Terence and his band showed up at 5 am. They never jammed together that night, but it was a great night of music(My favorite actually...TTD at First Ave, then Prince at Paisley).

They are friends and TTD has spoken of him quite often in interviews, though I don't know how much they still talk.

Don't know how afraid Prince or MJ were afraid of Terence - after all they were both selling millions of albums in the late 80's, but I do know P played 'Wishing Well' during the intermission of the Lovesexy show in Massachusetts.
