See this is why sometimes entertainers always end up putting their foots in their mouths. People could be serious in what they say and the media uses it, turns it around and they become laughingstocks. I just fear this don't happen to Prince but he's already being branded as some crazy old geezer who went out with the Jheri Curl. No respect. And if things get sour with him and the Mirror, the Mirror will indeed turn on him too.

Prince has to, and I bet he does understand, that no matter what he says, it'll never be in the way he means it. Now he's said this and folks are having a field day with it. Meanwhile Prince cashing his checks, he probably don't even know he's causing such a fervor with this. Unnecessary fervor. I mean agree with him or disagree with him, it was his opinion. But I guess this is why he differs from us (meaning folks who are talking on a message board) because we can say "the internet's dead" and people are like lol and moving on. Prince said this and he's on the evening news!

[Edited 7/8/10 16:11pm]

I disagree with U Prince knows exactly what people are saying about him. That is why he says things like that to get an reaction. Like always...

Well you can say that for ANY celebrity then.

Exactly. The media don't give a shit who you are, they'll pounce on you and act clueless no matter how long you've been in the business. That's how the mainstream media is handling what Prince is saying. "That crazy loon need to lock himself in Paisley Park and go play with his doves" or some shit. People don't give a shit anymore.

We sound like a couple of old men on rocking chairs. lol

It's true though! What happened to respect?

Apart from paying last respects to Michael Jackson, no one in the media OR even the industry itself respects their musical elders anymore.

The weirdest irony of all of this is that even with Prince's known eccentricities, I didn't think he would even go to a tabloid to even mention this. He talked to a tabloid. A tabloid lol so who's benefitting who?

This is the hot topic of the week. Prince had the balls to say what he did and now people are scrambling to either back him up or back him down. You know Apple iTunes and MTV were pissed when this hit. Regardless of how good they may be doing right now this is a slap in the face to them both. MTV died ages ago when they started that "the Hills" crapfest. Show some freaking music videos and stop giving me hours of some skater punks with endorsement deals! Apple iTunes is only good for finding older stuff in my opinion. Newer releases can be found damn near anywhere nowadays.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

hilarious. to see the same old tired routine gettin played out in the press for the last 30 years.

Prince says something STUPID without thinkin about what he actually saying

and they think it's deliberate, he's a master-marketer, and is sending out some coded message?

hilarious.

this has been happening ALL throughout Prince's career.

"the internet is dead" is a statement he made while he was pissing in the wind at some reporter,

loud-mouthing his way out of facing the REAL REASONS why the INTERNET hasn't 'treated' him like he thinks it should.

"oh yeah like you know he might be on to something he sendin coded message prohetic genius oo oo"

please.

at least now we know why TV and NEWSPAPERS are dead.

look at the stupidity of the people who are on them lol

This whole thing is just moronic.

I can't believe this has been talked about for more than 10 minutes.

This just shows the failure and the tabloid quality of the media.

Not just the American media, but media all over the world.

All I can do is just shake my head over the absurdity of it all.

I love how, after the arguments and debuttles reached it's circumference, everyone had no other choice but to conclude Prince is a master marketeer biggrin wink

& the reflection they gave to P's age was rather humorous as it was nostalgically fascinating

I absolutely loved how at one point somebody said that he said what he did for publicity so he could make more money. Don't they know that it isn't for sale and that he's GIVING IT AWAY for FREE? giggle

Prince was paid in advance by the newspapers. The newspapers paid Prince in advance because they expect to SELL more papers because of the CD. You have to BUY the paper that the CD is in.

Therefore...Prince is not "GIVING IT AWAY for FREE"! giggle

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

That was lame. They didn't even talk about the money the artists make.

Simple question that needs to be asked. Would prince make more money selling his music online or less?

He seems to be doing pretty well financially... they didn't even get into that... he's doing something right.

We also know he's never had a good relationship with the media to begin with...now they all pretty much treat him like the oddball uncle at the family barbeque. lol

In response to what these "news" folks were saying:

I really do think that Prince is talking about something that goes beyond the money, and that is the art. The fact is that albums may "be over," but they shouldn't be. Digital killed the art of record making (indirectly) when rcord companies forced the public to make the shift to CDs. They all but abandonded the single format, which made rock and roll what it is today...

These people got bored and try and fix something that was never broken. Then, when computers came into the mix, the single was re-born. And now they're talking about albums being a thing of the past. HOW SAD! The album is an art form. Not many artists today know how to make them anymore. Thanks be to God that Prince does, or at least cares about the art...

i agree but to say the internet is a over seems like prince took it into a different direction. but yeah i have thought about what u just said. im 16 so ive grown up with getting music just off itunes or limewire, and i usually just buy one or two songs not the whole cd. but i think that prince music really kinda changes that, when he comes out with a cd i go buy it for its entirety not for 1 or 2 songs bc u know that the songs on the album are linked together in a way and make up his artwork. cool

well done you! i think this is what P meant by the internet is dead

I kinda agree.

And when Prince said that the internet is over I'd liked if he meant that the internet as an experimental platform (internet instead of albums, single songs instead of a two-sides single and so forth), and that he's grown tired of what the internet can add to his music ("add", as in like the format of a single with a b-side can add to the original song (think of how well Shocadelica compliments If I was Your Girlfriend, or like a gatefold LP cover can add another dimension to the music).

I'd like to think that Prince thinks to himself, that he has utilized the internet as an "extra dimension" to his music (hopefully he'll then think of the eclecticism the internet allowed disjoined compilations like The Slaughterhouse to be and how the NPGmusicclub could relate to an audience in a different way than an LP can, rather than thinking of Lotusflower.com) and he feels it's something he has taken as far as it could artistically - thinking mostly as a musician looking for new formats to explore and not as a cooperation looking for new ways to sell.

But I'm afraid that he'll probably think of the internet as a market rather than a space where the formats of the old days no longer exists and music therefore can be as long, as short or as visual (or interactive, or changing every five hours or .. or ..) as one can imagine. Or at least as a platform to meet the fans as equals and earn some big money (I mean look at davidbowie.com .. it's a money making machine - and the fans are thrilled with it).

Ultimatively, I doubt the nobility of Prince .. but he sure does get his round in the ring these days with this statement. Crazy.

However for someone who is not No1 he sure is gettinga lot of attention. He is turning into the Pope-loads of people find him irrelevant and some or many hate him but they will refer to him when it comes to Christianity. prince is like that with music

sure, its just a shame that the media have to sensationalize and take his words on this issue so seriously.

he's is getting a lot of attention, but it's not good attention, because what he said is a direct insult to all the independent artists out there who use the internet to do what they do.

people may look to him as the Pope of music, just not sure they'll ever look to him for common sense.
