He has said that what ITUNES offers is not enough. It is obvious P has some amount of money he wants to receive upfront and maybe he gets what he wants from the newspapers.

what he wants is X amount of dollars up-front no matter how many copies he does or does not sell, rather making the music available to generate profit on its own merits. that shows quite a bit of insecurity on his part. financial and artistic. and that's such an outmoded way of doing business, it's the old record industry system that he railed against for so many years. i guess that model isn't so bad if you're willing to take a massive check. and that's exactly why record companies own master recordings. they pay for them. with those massive advances and signing bonuses up front.

he's talking out of both sides of his mouth. but he always has.

It's actually a smart and cost-saving way for him to do his business. No worries about accounting for units/retailers/distributors over an extended period of time. Get the product ready, get paid up front and move on. shrug

falloff falloff 1000 lawd have mercys and oh my jeezuses, not those three. lol That is hilarious, reminds me of the scene in the movie "Beloved" that Oprah played in, when the church women were basically marching to Oprah's character's house, to cast out the evil spirit in Thandie Newton's character. lol

Anyway, I guess folks in here keep getting Shelby J 's (the singer) name confused with youtube Shelbey.

the interview article has the same feel to it as a movie about a guy who is lured into a haunted house with an eccentric wizard living inside and strange vaudeville women ooze out through the walls.

the lights dont work, some random taxi creepy taxi driver appears with a japanese lady, and he's taken from room to room and shown the weird world of another episode of the twilight zone.

an apparition greets him at the door with a ghostly fang smile, "be patient a little longer"...

"You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension - a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into the Twilight Zone."

Maybe it's 20+10=30. How long has Prince been doing music? I don't really know it's just a guess.

I thought u were talking about the last two things he made public. Of the songs you listed musicology got good airplay in urban markets, Fury & Cinnamon Girl were only released in the UK, Te Amo Corazon was a bad choice for a single, Black Sweat got minimal play but was a decent choice for a single in urban markets, Guitar could have been a hit IMO, but didn't get airplay because P isn't quite taking the steps he'd need to to get newer stuff played on rock stations

Cinnamon Girl is a bit corny... te amo corazon, a little, but I think everyone's in a concensus that P (I think intentionally for some reason) picks bad singles...

I disagree people want to get something for nothing.

If I had music or any other "product" that I knew was going to be accessed for free I would have to charge up front as well.

These days you cant trust a person to have access to that material and keep it to themselves.

Oh please! rolleyes

Just a little over an hour ago, I read in the Non-Prince Music forum about The Roots new CD, "How I Got Over", went to the website, took a listen to their new music...that I enjoyed and very happliy plunked down $29.99.

My $29.99 bought me the CD, a t-shirt AND a download of the entire album in Lossless FLAC! drool I have not one damn problem paying for what I want!

Prince's problem is...he doesn't put out what his fans want! He puts out what he wants them to have! Unfortunately, for him...that doesn't work anymore when it comes to MY money! shrug

Well fine and dandy.

I am happy for you and for your decision not to buy Prince's music.

Well, I KNOW you are wrong. If there had even been the slightest possibility of that website having serious CONTENT that people actually wanted. They have joined! If not immediately, they'd have joined when they could afford it because it would have been worth it.

The economy is still bad and Prince doesn't have people in place that can forcast how many tickets he can sell for a concert but that is not stopping him from going to Europe, is it?

Yes, and P could have waited around for a year or two for people to decide they wanted to join !!!!

I guess if he has the funds to throw out the window he would have waited around but apparently he did not want to. If I had a dollar for every person I have heard say outloud " I steal music off the internet and I do not and will not pay for anything" I would be a weathy person.

People simply do not want to pay for music and CD sells prove what I am saying. In addition, I have never heard anyone say they will not pay to see a concert and concert ticket sales over all have not fallen as badly as CD sales. P managed to make over 100 million a few years ago he knows exactly how much money he can make on the road.

I hate that I'm allowing myself to get sucked into this, but...

I bought LotusFlow3r 3 times. I bought it at Target the day it came out for $11.99. I bought a back-up copy a couple months ago because they marked them down to $4.99. And I bought the French 2xLP for $29.99 because I wanted it on vinyl.

I did NOT joing the website. My reasons obviously had nothing to do with being unwilling to pay for music.

I didn't join for a lot of reasons but mainly for 2 specific reasons:

1) After being screwed over several times by Prince's independent retail ventures (1-800-NEW-FUNK, NPGMC) I didn't trust LotusFlow3r.com to deliver the promised material or to provide adequate customer service if they failed to deliver

2) I didn't think the content was worth the price. The 3CD set at Target was a much better deal. A couple bonus tracks, streaming video I've already seen and a t-shirt for $77 was not a good deal.

If at any time the 10 CD set of unreleased material that the web designer teased would be available had ever become available, I would have signed up that very day. That would have made it "worth it" to me to risk his poor business model. As many expected, that never happened.

When he offers what I want to buy at a price I'm willing to pay I buy it every time, and what I want to buy is MUSIC! Lots and lots of MUSIC!!

I'm pretty sure many others here feel the same.

...and don't even get me started on subscribing to NPG magazine. And the crystal ball fiasco.. and ... and.. Let's face it, Prince has the attention span of a 2 year old with ADHD who's just downed a litre of Sunny D.

If distributing via a newspaper means I get an album cheap, fast and without the usual mystical bullshit, then I'm happy.

If that album contains decent music, then I'll be even happier.

If the album is any reflection on some of this interview it should be a good album, can't wait.

l

Don't you think he means it is over in a financial way. Nobody wants to pay for music so he cannot make money on a website. I really think that is the reason the site was taken down he just did not get enought people to join to make a profit.

Yes ur right about the paying of music. But he must of made money out of the site, I really can't see how he couldn't of, there was thousands that signed up for it. The site was taken down because of other reasons, which im not gonna go into because its to long and boring and not only that other orgers will moan lol

I am not saying that the content he put up was worth the $77.00 but he may be right the internet for distrubuting music for payment is done.

He just saying that coz he f'up the site. Dont listen everything Prince says u know he twists things to favour himself lol have u ever heard him admit to anything when hes wrong? lol But i love this interview hes comes over as being at a happy place, relaxed, quirky, funny, playful and saying his usual off the wall stuff, this is the Prince i know and loved. I'm very excited to get my hands on this album now.

you know, i don't know exactly why the album is going to be released in an official way by

warners. releasing it with the newspapers all over europe (belgium and germany are now

certain and i'm sure more will follow), will cause the album to be very widespread by the

time warners are going to release it (i doubt they will be able to rush release this before

the belgium newspapers on july 10th). people are either going to send others copies of it

or just upload it and share the music.

at the end of the day, the 'album', will only be a disc in a cardboard sleeve, much like the

planet earth release. the official release of planet earth in stores didn't contribute anything

to the newspaper release and was the first retail release i didn't buy, simply because it had

no extra's compared to the free one i got.

chances are that it will be just about the same for "20Ten".

so that makes me wonder about these weird distribution deals he makes. sometimes it all

seems like a very complicated mess for him to release an album and he has to use some

very unconventional ways to get his music out there. you'd expect that major labels would

be more willing to release an exclusive album with them and only them than they would be

to distribute an album that 90% of fans have already heard by the time it's released and

which at least 50% of the leftover fans won't buy in stores since they already have a real,

physical copy from the newspaper give away.

that's weird logic imo. what kind of money can there possibly be in that kind of a deal for

a recordlabel distributing this? his albums sell, what, 500.000 worldwide these days on a

very very good day. more like 300.000 on average.

but hey, no biggie, i'm glad i'm getting the album with my newspaper, it's all good. i just

don't understand how he's able to get a deal for these albums after he's already released

them in another way.

To those who are offended by Prince's remarks regarding the internet think of this for a minute.

How many people who are casual Prince fans will engage the internet as a means to access music?

When you get a number then think of a percentage that will fit then think of another percentage that will plunk down "x" dollars to belong to a website.

That will get you a pretty good idea of what the Lotus membership numbers were.

Also I would guess that a high percentage of people who are Prince fans are (ahem) 35-50 meaning they may like their music like me in hard copy formats. Although I have music downloaded I still prefer going to the wreka stow and getting a copy.

I also read into Prince's comments to say just because the internet is a popular form now it may not be in the future, but I just don't get the "newspaper" distribution route.
