I can't see the UK or USA getting it for free, UK got PE with Mail On Sunday and O2 tickets and USA got Musicology with the tour tickets, i just hope he'll release it normally around the same time as the others get theirs.

cool

you know, i don't know exactly why the album is going to be released in an official way by

warners. releasing it with the newspapers all over europe (belgium and germany are now

certain and i'm sure more will follow), will cause the album to be very widespread by the

time warners are going to release it (i doubt they will be able to rush release this before

the belgium newspapers on july 10th). people are either going to send others copies of it

or just upload it and share the music.

at the end of the day, the 'album', will only be a disc in a cardboard sleeve, much like the

planet earth release. the official release of planet earth in stores didn't contribute anything

to the newspaper release and was the first retail release i didn't buy, simply because it had

no extra's compared to the free one i got.

chances are that it will be just about the same for "20Ten".

so that makes me wonder about these weird distribution deals he makes. sometimes it all

seems like a very complicated mess for him to release an album and he has to use some

very unconventional ways to get his music out there. you'd expect that major labels would

be more willing to release an exclusive album with them and only them than they would be

to distribute an album that 90% of fans have already heard by the time it's released and

which at least 50% of the leftover fans won't buy in stores since they already have a real,

physical copy from the newspaper give away.

that's weird logic imo. what kind of money can there possibly be in that kind of a deal for

a recordlabel distributing this? his albums sell, what, 500.000 worldwide these days on a

very very good day. more like 300.000 on average.

but hey, no biggie, i'm glad i'm getting the album with my newspaper, it's all good. i just

don't understand how he's able to get a deal for these albums after he's already released

them in another way.

I was thinking the same thing but what acts beside the teeny boppers are selling mass numbers of records ? Who knows what goes on in the mind of Prince?

I think he likes the money up front, that way he doesn't have to work for it.

He's already said why he doesn't like iTunes, because it's not upfront cash. If you put something out there, then you have to promote it to sell it - bundling it with a newspaper, there's no need to do that if he isn't getting paid per unit.

It's a shame, I don't know if it shows lack of faith/interest in the product, or just general distain for the promotional activities (outside touring of course, which is a money-earner itself).

I think we kinda lose out because there's no singles, b-sides, remixes, videos etc, beyond that innitial push on release (like Lotus, PE etc) - even an iTunes single could get some pocket change just from fans surely.

Most fan are happy for Prince to keep doing what he's doing, we really don't care if we get the CD for Free in a newspaper or with a pint of milk, who cares as long as we get the music.

I and i would think most people on the org don't give a monkeys about Apple itune's ...who cares

Prince makes the music and gives it to us, that all i care about, how he get's paid is for him to work out!

Prince is always looking to do a deal, so his music get to the people ... and i like that! as long as i can get i'm happy, hence he's doing the deal with WB so people out side of europe can get the music, which is fair! biggrin

Yes, you are right.

This is the opposite of what might be needed, looking at the current known financial fact$ about the cri$i$.

The USA are assumed to be broke, just living off of printing more of their fiat currency.

The EU are near that phase but not so close as the previous nation.

In that light the USA would wish for free CD's.

Haha!

And free money for financial institutions AKA TBTFs is not socialism?

Of course you understand that true socialism or even the kind you will find outside of the USA is slightly different from the socialism that they confuse with communism.

In a rigged market system as we currently have we might be already farther from freedom thay we think. No, it is not just about the money, but about the underlying principles and beliefs that appear to be corrupt.

When is the audit of the FED scheduled?

And yes, I might want to trade a 'free' European newspaper-copy-with-CD for a USA-released CD if it is at least slightly different.

Hatrina, it's not like he's giving a concert in the U.S. right now, so it will be cool to get the music for purchase here, while he's touring in Europe. He's putting the cd in the places where he is giving a show, and like someone else said, there will be fans paying to see his shows in those places as well. So he lucks out both ways. Remember, no one puts a gun to anyone's head and forces them to pay for anything unless they want to. With music fans finding ways to download music for free, artists now have to find alternate ways of selling their music and I think the newspaper/mag thing is not a bad idea.

Interesting, though his response to people who say he's lost it being "I play guitar better now" shows he does not understand what they are saying.

Let's clarify that I believe people are referring to the songwriting and creative arrangements and not so much to the level of musicianship, which I think most people still agree is excellent.

He sees making music as a craft, and himself as part of a tradition. This might not be the way we want to think of him, but it is a legitimate perspective, isn’t it?

Yes, he certainly does - and should. But the actual point that NDRU and I agreed upon was Prince's complete obliviousness to the fact that fans are for the most part, complaining about his downward spiral as a songwriter and composer, not as a musician. In the interview, Prince went off on a tangent about his guitar playing abilities then vs now and directed his thoughts on the subject to fans that think he's "lost it". He has lost something. Perspective.

Honestly, who has ever complained about the guitar playing on such classic albums such as Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain etc? If anything, the rawness and seeming simplicity of his 80s fret-work is what makes those albums endearing.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.
