Fabulous album. Best thing since Lovesexy for me. It reawakened my interest in his music after the constant disappointments of the 90s.

It was the first time in a long time I popped the CD in and thought 'what the dangleberries is he doing now!' I had missed that feeling.

Enjoy.

100% on the same page!

Like all his most interesting songs, Prince adopts a persona and then lets it come to life in music. This is what TRC is all about, a dark journey through the mind of a religious fundamentalist fighting off dark forces on his way to enlightenment. It's crazy insane, it's brilliant, it's both uplifting and depressing, it's the most well rounded album Prince ever made.
My brain stored every millisecond of this album, which i cannot say for any post '88 album, so i really really love this one... all killer no filler.

I love this album

I think musically it's the closest to Purple Music than most of his year 2000s albums, The overt JW vibe I can ignore because he's talking in so many riddles or so much of it is combined with Egyptology

I don't care for the 'Darth Vader' voice but its not all over the album and I can actually listen 2 this 1 all the way thru. I don't care for the Work though

I'd agree with this, 'The Work' and the segues I dont listen to but the rest is mostly good. I especially like 'Muse 2 The Pharoah', 'Mellow', 'Everlasting Now', maybe not lyrically but musically yes.

As long as I don't dwell too much on what the album is about, or if I just take it as if Prince is funking up a myth and coming up with some of his best music in a while, then that album is in my top ten. The Wedding Feast stands out like a sore bass thumb though, almost as if he was hoping for a Jehovah opera and settled for the concept album.

Fenwick

For the studio version of the album, She Loves Me 4 Me, The Work, Family Name (minus the two and half minute intro) and Last December all work for me. I don't consider any of it spectacular, but they are good songs. (It's simply not worth debating the lyrics. I'm not a fan). I will say that it seems like The Work gets no love around here. And that blows my mind.

This album's biggest proponents seem to worship the production just as much as anything else. To me, musically the album feels like it's got a bit of a wet blanket on it. The way an album like Marvin Gaye's I Want You does. Only in the case of Marvin's album, the subdued feel makes the album more special. On Rainbow Children, it kills the energy IMO.

I mention this last bit because I find the live versions of these tunes to have a LOT more life/energy and are far more enjoyable. (The drum sound on ONA Live is just killer). Even the title track, which I find very boring (and almost cheesy) on the studio version, turns from something pretty lackluster to something very enjoyable live. It also helps that the dark voice has been omitted from most of the live material.

TOO BAD. and furthermore, Prince eats and sleeps his music...by comparison, you only nap and nosh your music. but its all relative..right?

LOL That response is ridiculous!

Look...Prince isnt stupid, he knew VERY FEW would like this album. Its absolutely horrible! Its his worst selling album of all time if im not mistaken (excluding NEWS)..So that alone tells you something. Most of his die hard fans didnt even go out to grab this one. As a matter of fact...it probably cost him more fans. It almost cost him ME as a fan.
Theres only one song that stood a chance and thats The Same December.
Its the Jackson Pollock Painting of music. A bunch of jibirish thrown onto an album that the vast majority didnt get or understand. Maybe when Prince has passed on, it will be a sought after masterpiece, but until then.....

And let's not forget that Prince immediately promoted it as "The New Controversial Album by Prince" when it came out. That note was probably from the response at the Celebration in 2001 when he played the album for fans. Fans seemed to love the music, but called into question the lyrical content.

For the record, Chaos, Black Album, Rainbow, Planet Earth, and Lotusflow3r never even received Gold status. Chaos sold about half of what Lotus did out of the gate. So yes, it's a dismal selling album, and for good reason.

Your reply is juvenile at best. It's the same old "you're just jealous" routine that some 4th grader would extol on the masses on the school yard.

I'm not jealous of anything Prince is, was, or will be. To be jealous of someone is a waste of my time. I have the same musical gift that Prince does. We both play music, we both write music. He's done other things with his gift that are different than what I've done with mine. Neither is right or wrong, it's just relative to our own experience.

I'm certainly not jealous of his bullshit Jehovah's Witness status. It's what has made him soft, lifeless, uninspired, and generic.

As far as what people say about my music... SO WHAT. I will continue to do what God gave me talent to do. If people have a problem with that, that's none of my business. Prince doesn't care what I think of The Rainbow Children, so why should I care what someone else thinks of my music? I've had positive and negative feedback on my music, but it's left me undeterred in making more music, or changing what I've already done. Prince has already used his religious crutch as an excuse to go back and deny his past (a past God gave him and that we helped foster by buying music and concert tickets), and edit his music. It's like chopping off your kid's finger because they picked their nose. It's unethical of Prince to do it, and there's nothing about that which I am jealous of.

Wrong on so many levels, its just too funny! You really should hear yourself!

hah!
"I have the same musical gift that Prince does." In which universe?! You lost any credibility you could have possibily mustered straight from the off and only further cemented that with the rest of your diatribe.

The original poster also did not suggest you were jealous of Prince. He did suggest you might ENVY him - there is a massive difference. And this from the "say what you mean" guy hmmmm?! He said envy and you twisted it in to "jealousy" simply to support your weak argument.

People use "religious crutches" to excuse a lot of things. But I'm still astounded to learn that God gave us Dirty Mind! eek

Actually, musicians that care about their work care about the reception it gets and it may or may not affect what they do in the future. Perhaps you don't care about your work?

When I 1st heard this album I was like "Um, what" ... Musically it's top notch but the lyrics (when you read em) let's you know what Prince was reading and being heavily influenced by: the JW way of life. That's cool for him but I'm not feelin' it. The music again, was great (imho) ...
Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

Look, when a guy like Prince cant even sell 200,000 copies of an album, it must be crap.
As far as quality being based on commercial success....Gold Experience was an incredible album, but it was a commercial failure. But it did at least go gold in the U.S. if im not mistaken.
Rainbow is an awful album. And of course this is just my opinion as well as the opinion most of his fans.

I did hear of that site, but it's normally Prince.org I look to for the updates, (been a lurker for 8 years now, just recently plucked up the gonads to join).

It's just there's been so many sites in the past that's been forced to quit after injunctions from The Lawyers that I stopped following the fansites.

Hmmm well, Ernest although I do have big respect for you and I am glad your part of the .org this is one thing I don't understand about you..

You feel(and I'm sure plenty of others do as well), that the last great album Prince made was The Gold Experience right? Well, how would you explain the decrease of quality in music between 1996 and 2000 when he wasn't a JW?

I am not religious myself, and everyone is entitled to their opinion but to call it "Bullshit Jehovah's Witness Status"...I just don't get why you have to slag his religion(and a religion of countless others).

I get a feeling, correct me if I am wrong, that if Prince became a Buddhist or Catholic instead you wouldn't be objecting to it. Whats so terrible about him being a Jehovah's Witness? Apparently he's very happy being one..We as fans should be happy if he's happy..I know I am:)

TRC made up for a very bumpy 90's from Prince. It was the most creative album since Lovesexy, IMO, and the first to truly sound like Prince since Graffiti Bridge. I thought that with him changing his name back, maybe he'd go back to making amazing albums, too. Unfortunately, it was just one blip on the radar screen, and he didn't keep with that theme.

It's flawed, but the highs were so high they made up for the lows.

Wasnt he being influenced by Larry Graham around 1997 or 1998? Larry was feeding him the JW beliefs at the time. Prince started softening up and even changed the Cross to the Christ at that time. So yea..The JW status did make his music a little weaker. Cant balme it completely, but i feel it did play a big part. As far as The Gold Experience, it was as close to flawless as you can get. Truley his last "GREAT" album.
