Obviously these aren’t of ideal quality, but they were most likely filmed with the same type of camera you used to document your GI Joe melting into oblivion, so don’t complain.

It's a story on Prince's rare videos, I guess.

I just wish Prince had a website where he could post exclusive videos like this. Maybe one where people would pay a fee for access to exclusive rare videos and 10 albums of unreleased music.

I've just gone exploring back in time and right now where I am, it's August 3rd 1983. Prince and I, the Revolution and a whole bunch of other folks are having ourselves one absolutely, positively, motherfucking STUPENDOUS time at the First Avenue!!!

It was filmed on June 7, 1984, his birthday. They were rehearsing for the First Avenue birthday gig later that evening (which the audio for has been bootlegged out I believe). And, according to studio records, and Per Nilsen's DMSR book, it's also the date of the actual recording for "All Day, All Night". When you see Prince and the Revolution playing it in the video, THAT is them actually recording it. That is the version you eventually hear on Jill's album, sans his vocals of course. The recording is also historic because it has them playing "Roadhouse Garden" and "Our Destiny". Also interesting to see the infamous Susan Rogers running around doing her job.

It's truly a great piece of Prince history. I just presented this video to a band member the other day and asked if they had seen the video before. They had, and added that even back then Prince was notorious w/ folks for recording every performance, and dissecting it afterward; even a rehearsal.

The very end of the video is funny, once it's over and everyone files out of the room. Fink's dork side shines as he says "WHAT ELSE ARE WE PLAYING?" or something like that.

To set the record straight, the recording of All Day, All Night that ended up on Jill Jones' record was from the First Ave show and not this rehearsal, correct?

i'm pretty sure the version on jill jones album is a studio recording, but the circulating prince "outtake" is from the first avenue show, not the rehearsal

About the song

All Day, All Night is the fifth track on Jill Jones's first and only Paisley Park Records album Jill Jones. Although Jill Jones shared official writing credits, the song was written solely by Prince and is registered at the Library of Congress as having been written by Joey Coco.

In 2009, Prince used the label All Day, All Night for two concerts in Paris, France on 11 October: a 5pm show (All Day) and a 10pm show (All Night); he also performed the song and used chants from the song several times during the shows and others that followed later that week; it remains to be seen if there is a further purpose behind this use of the song's name.

Initial tracking for Prince's original version took place during Prince & The Revolution's concert on 7 June, 1984 at First Avenue in Minneapolis, MN, USA (this is listed in the unreleased versions section since it was used as a basis for the released track). Prince added further instrumentation and Jill Jones added vocals at a later date (likely 1986-7, although this is unconfirmed).
