It's not the fact that he wrote a fight song for the Vikings (as brutally traumatizing as THAT may be in ITSELF), it's the song ITSELF. I need therapy now.

And HEAVEN HELP US ALL when people start realizing that this is PRINCE. It's like someone said before, just WAIT for the bullshit we're gonna have to hear about Prince now...

eek
lol I don't know...it's been a tough news week for me and I guess I'm happy for a bit of silly. I kinda think it's cute he's showing some hometown pride and showing a playful side. I don't care if people clown him. Bob Dylan's Christmas CD, Prince's Vikings song....*shrugs*...they aren't hurting anyone. lol

I agree wholeheartedly, it's all in good fun. After this hellish news week Princey managed to put a smile on my face.

OK, to be fair the OP and Funkenberry dubbed it a "Fight" song. The story on the song calls it just that a "song" for the Vikings.

This is more like a School Hymn, except that the Vikings are a pro team.

I'm so confused...

Purple and Gold Lyrics

the veil of the sky draws open
the roar of the chariots touch down
we r the ones who have now come again
and walk upon water like solid ground
as we approach the throne we won't bow down
this time we won't b denied

raise every voice and let it b known
in the name of the purple and gold

we come in the name of the purple and gold
all of the odds r in r favor
no prediction 2 bold
we r the truth if the truth can b told
long reign the purple and gold

the eyes say ready 4 battle
no need 4 sword in hand
we r all amped up like a rock n roll band

Im confused, is this about the Vikings or Jesus?

We had 3 school songs, but especially in the Big 10, schools have marches for their fight songs, something to get the people up out of their seats.

My high school fight song was "On Wisconsin" but with different words.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Is it just me or did the opening remind you of Lift Every Voice and Sing? eek

And the bit about chariots sounds like he got his Vikings mixed up with his Greek mythology.

I like it.

"Purple and Gold" is in the tradition of a spirit and team alma mater. It sounds to me as a song that would be played in Victory. If the Vikings go all the way to the Super Bowl and win, this would be the song heard around the sports world with fans singing and celebrating in unity at the games end. I like the kind, sweet and proud type feel and spirit to the music. It shows another dimension to Prince and his music. I really want to hear a full high quality version of the song! The instruments and arrangement are interesting. I dig it!

This is just plain BAD! I love the man and always will but come on! Where are your priorities? Um maybe you haven't heard? Haiti could kind of use everyones help. I think most of us could do with out the vikings song. Think about how much he could help if he released a single or even had a show with all proceeds going to help Haiti. Just my opinion.....

I think Prince should have done it this way.
To the tune of "GUITAR"

Gettin' older, hair turnin' grey
Retired from a team that plays in Green Bay
He got the call so he jumped in his car
We love you Packers.....
But not like we love our BRETT FAVRE!

Peterson couldn't do it himself
They had to go and get somebody else
They called number 4
cuz they know he's a star
We love the Vikings...
But not like we love our BRETT FAVRE

Sanchez we warned you it's hard to be star
Barely old enough to drive your own car
You got a good arm boy, it took you pretty far
We love you Marky...
But not like we love our BRETT FAVRE

The Saints are good, I'm not gonna pretend
But their QB's hair is startin' to thin
The Superbowl? Nah, they won't get that far
We love New Orleans.....
But not like we love our BRETT FAVRE

We love you Peyton, and we wish you well
Play when you're 40, that's hard to tell
Until that day you've got Sony's to sell
We love you Manning...
But not like we love our BRETT FAVRE biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin

I read all this expecting the worst thing ever.

But, after listening, i find it's CLEAR Prince is throwing back to the hymns of old, a classic war hymn.

Its like wedding feast, you bug about it's awfulness when it's again, clearly tongue in cheek.

This is the same, a short supportive fight hymn of old. Nothing more.

Not a new song.

Do i like it? No, why would i? it's not a new song but, i see it for what it is, no problem.

And if anything...its taking Prince's diversity even further, don't you think?...anything he can't do?

I can't believe how much people have missed the point. But, it's easier to rip on him eh?

On a side note, i remember reading that some people here wanted him to do a kid type album full of kid style melodies and shock everyone and get them all wind up....coincidence???
