I was grooving to Untitled by DAngelo and I always knew it was heavy on the Prince sound but I am starting to think that he should have paid Prince a fee for all the stuff he borrowed on this cut!

PRINCE SHOULD BE PAYING THE FAMILY OF JIMMY HENDRIX FOR
ALL THE SHIT HE RIPPED OFF HIM, FROM MUSIC TO STAGE
PRESENSE... NOT TO MENTION PHOTO IDEAS!!!

I fervently hope that nobody tries to deny any Hendrix copping (they always do) because Im ready to tear Prince a new asshole for rippin him many a time if so.

Cool, we all can only give opinion on how we hear it. "Feel Like Makin' Love" is a cover of the Roberta Flack classic btw, do you dislike the song or just D's take? One cover on each album.

i like his version of 'feel like makin' love', but there's just too little happening in the song. the live version on the other hand is just too funky; a lot is happening there! i think it's alright to cover songs like he's done, cause he definitely knows what he's doing, but to make it a tradition for every album he releases, that idea i don't like!

Personally I feel he hasn't put his name on a weak track period, I know he isn't exactly prolific but right down to the colaborations, soundtracks, remixes, B-sides... the quality has been sustained.

absolutely. he releases quality stuff. talking about b-sides; have you heard 'everybody loves the sunshine'.. man, this (roy ayers) tune is just beautiful. makes me wonder if we'll ever hear the unreleased song 'bitch'; also a song with quest, supposedly sounding as raw and dark as 'playa playa'..

Yeah I have all his non album tracks (Bar a few remixes I guess). "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" cover of Roy Ayers, the cat has such a long list of covers. Even on the classic Jazz Cafe 95 show he was doing Al Green (So Glad Your Mine) Ohio Players (Sweet sticky thing), Smokey (Cruisin of course). When I saw him on Voodoo tour he covered Ohio Players (Fire), James Brown, Funkadelic (Good To Your Earhole)...

At the notorious London aftershow he did Dorothy Parker, Shes Always In My Hair and rare non played Voodoo tracks like "The Root" and "One Mo Gin". ?uest raved about it, five afro picks.

now wait a minute.. YOU WERE THERE? at the aftershow i mean? if so, you are one lucky mofo, pardon my french! and you've got to give me a full description of the show; that is IF you were there. the people who went must have the best time hearing 'she always in my hair', 'the root' and last but not least 'the line'..

Ahhh don't get me started, I actually didn't attend but found out following morning I could have! A connection had passes who we didn't hook up with. So like you I just have the reviews to go on.

It actually made the UK press the next day because Lennox Lewis attended and Mel B/G of Spice Girls got into a fight with some girl.

I reckon the Emancipation set has a lot of similar sounding stuff to the Brown Sugar album which I think was first.

Maybe Prince owes a thankyou to D'Angelo ... wink

Untitled is clearly a hommage to Prince, but has anyone else noticed how incredibly similar U Make My Sun Shine is to Untitled? Maybe that's Prince paying hommage to D'Angelo paying hommage to Prince??!?!?!?

If D'Angelo has to pay Prince, Prince has to pay James Brown for the JB excursions he rides. I think in both instances the homages are purposeful and out of respect, not really an I'm out of ideas, I need to steal a Prince/JB song mentality.

Allow me to piggyback on Nova's point here by providing an example...

Prince And The Revolution- Kiss This is James Brown and Sly Stone right down the middle. Listen real close to the guitar riff after the chorus on James Brown's Papa Got A Brand New Bag" and then listen to the guitar riff after the choruses on "Kiss". Then of course you have the wah-wah guitar sounds on "Kiss" which is right out of the Sly Stone book.
