Where are all the Musicology, 3121 and Planet Earth haters?

We've got one vote for 3121 so far. Maybe they just don't even bother for a thread like this or they think all three are so damn bad they can't decide for one lol

I like them, though, especially Musicology.

I think Planet Earth is a decent album. Musicology was bland but more inspired than 3121 which is utter dross from start to finish.

ok i give in...News is a good instrumental, but I never found myslef wanting to play it. I cant believe it wasnt just a NPGMC release

Co-co-co sign. N.E.W.S. is an album I played ONCE and never again. IMO his worst album is a tie between this and Xpectation. ill

Im sure Prince himself has his least favourite, but really i find threads like this are totally disrespectful to the man.

BTW, I know he had a hand in Carmen Electra ( lol ) so i'll go with that!

I don't think he has a "worst album" there may b tracks on it I don't particularly like but I wouldn't say the ENTIRE album.

I would say the entire cd sucks. The first time I listened to it I was skipping to the next song trying to find a better one and got to the end with no such luck and never played it again.

I haven't given everything super thorough listenings yet, but 3121 is very hard for me to appreciate. I can really only get into 3121 and The Word.

I can't believe he threw that Auto Tune shit on there (like on Incense and Candles). A lot of mainstream cheese on that album.

I can see why Graffiti Bridge draws ire from fans, but there are several outstanding tracks on there... most of it is okay and The Time songs are awful, but Thieves in The Temple, Still Would Stand All Time, The Question of U, Joy in Repetition... so bad-ass...

Dirty Mind. Okay, not liking it because of the raunchy lyrics makes sense, but not fitting with his repertoire?! Really?! Really? really

He did an about turn concerning the over-produced sound of his eponymous second album... and he maintained that "demo"-like sound through out the 80's. This is also the beginning of oh-so-distinct Prince sound. For You and Prince sound like solid but generic 70's R&B/disco. I like them, but they lack that truly unique Prince sound, though there are touches here and there (like the strumming and chord progression on Crazy You), but nothing like Dirty Mind. This is also the album where he crosses over (successfully). He's no longer a "black" artist, but just an artist. I would also have to argue that this album defined not only his repertoire, but the rest of his career (for good and bad). He's been JW for 7 years and people are still whining about the lack of crazy-sex-stuff.

For me, the lyrics on Sister are so insanely ridiculous that I just love it. "Incest is everything it's said to be" makes me laugh almost every time I hear it.

It's funny how we all have different tastes. LOL

The album that I reach for LEAST is probably Dirty Mind.

Too dirty raunchy. Songs lik Sister, and Head... nahhh... true, it's classic Prince, but this is the album that really is out of place in his repertoire!

Even raunchy for Prince!

Do you realize that hardcore Prince fans hated Purple Rain, not because it was a bad album, but because they thought the man sold out his roots created with "Dirty Mind" for a fucking pop album. How old are you and when did you first get into Prince? It just isn't right for someone to say that Dirty Mind was his worst album. You should be bitch-slapped. lol

I think we need to make a distinction between your least favourite and truly worst Prince album. They're not always the same.

I loathe the majority of the lyrics on TRC, but I'd be a fool to call it his worst album because it's full of inspired songwriting and warm production. The fact that I can't relate to it should not be held against it.

My least favourite album is N.E.W.S. because it's an unambitious set of what sound like little more than band rehearsal sessions by a talented group of musicians.

His worst album is a toss up between Rave and NewPower Soul. Both represent the most charmless desperation of Prince. Both have tacky and pointless guest appearances, annoyingly bad lyrics in most of the songs, and pop songs so irritable you're tempted to think Prince wanted them to sound bad on purpose.

In the end, I'd have to say NPS sucks ever so slightly more. Whereas Rave at least has the heartbreaking ballad I Love U, But I Don't Trust U Anymore, NPS just has the trite Until U're In My Arms Again and good but overly long The One to show for itself. Rave is also a bit more full of ideas. NPS just sounds bored with itself, as if Prince and the NPG wanted to get out of the studio and back onto a stage as soon as possible. Push It Up, Freaks On This Side, and I Like Funky Music sound almost identical, which is funny considering they are all horrible songs.

One last funny note is that, as if it wasn't already apparent that Rave has no artistic integrity, Prince decides to be even more transparent by throwing an ad for his website onto the end of it. That really sums up that whole era.
The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I strongly disagree on that part, having listened to so much better fusion jazz to ever believe its anything but mediocre.
Pick up a Herbie Hancock record, then tell me if you still think the same way about TRC
"Headhunters", now that’s inspired!

TRC has been so cringeworthy to me on so many levels from the first time I listened to it, from the truly bad lyrics,to that lame 70's fusion jazz version of his standard 90's sound.

All the tunes sound like familiar Prince records, I kept thinking to myself "what song does that remind me of?"
1+1+1=3 for example is a lame version of "erotic city"
Nothing inspiring about that.

If you like it fine, but the only inspiration it gives me, is to never listen to it again.

No disrespect, but the 12 kids here who praise TRC should really listen to more stuff outside Prince to get a better gauge of the really great music out there, and missing out on. and I’m speaking as a huge Prince fan.

I wholeheartedly believe TRC belongs on top of that giant heap of Prince's recent worst albums.

NewPowerSoul Why did he make this shite, theres like one decent (Not good, but fair) song on it called The One. I love Alex Hahns desciption of it, "All the songs are about sex and dancing. Chaka Khans and GCS2000 also share the funk lite sound of NPS and had little critical or commercial success"
Its the only album I refused to buy, I spent $3NZ on the TRC and $7 on Rave and I actually got value there.
NPS is just a bad imitation of Justin Timberlake imitating a Prince imitation if u get what I mean.
Lovesexy, TGE, are not weak and Dirty Mind whoever said that might as well stop listening to Prince now, or perhaps they got misdirected from the best album thread. But Batman and GB do have some shit, and they did their piece to help Prince lose some fairweather fans (Purple Rain was well and truly dead by then).
17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

Sad to say it, but, Around the World In a Day. (I was born the year it came out. Aren't people supposed to have an affinity to at least ONE album in the year they are born? lol ) I have tried to like the album as a whole, but, it's one or two songs that I like. I'd like to say that liking most of the tracks would mean I like it all, but....ehhh...it's one of the least played albums in my collection. If not for the extended version of Raspberry Beret and a few other tracks, I would have looked right over this album. It's just one I'm not that in love with.

Least Favorites.

would have to be any one of - For You, Prince and Dirty Mind(simply because of the song 'sister' which goes way beyond wrong)
Sure I listened to them often back in the early 80s.
But I didn't have the selection of things to listen to then, that I have today.

Those are followed closely by 'batman' and 'rave' - 'newpowersoul' would be on the list, but I prefer to pretend that it doesn't exist lol

Its not so much viewing an album as the worst, but having better ones to choose from.
