END OF AN ERA - Berlin's Prince Night Goes Out In Style

For 13 years, the last Sunday of the month in Chicago meant Prince Nite at Club Berlin, seldome seen and unseen videos, new music, Purple Rain cocktails, and dancing til dawn. I don't think anyone can count how many Quakers, orgers, and NPGMC members partied together during that time and now, sadly, its coming to an end. sad

Berlin will host a White Party as the final event, Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008. I hope those of you who can, will be there one last time, and that those of you who can't, will send a card or note to wish Sam and Chad well. yes

Club Berlin
954 W Belmont Ave
Chicago, IL 60657

Whatever philosophical differences there may be between the various FAM sites, the one thing we've always been able to come together for is the Music, and a great time... Hope to hear from you or see you there, so we can

KEEP THE PARTY MOVIN headbang grouphug

Peace ~

I was devastated when I heard this. Prince Night at Berlin is *the* reason I became a Prince fan. My ex was a Prince fan and would drag me there every month in the late 90s. (So many tired Mondays, but worth every minute!)

I fell in love with a song they would play every month: "Let the rain come down, let the rain come down..." I asked him what song it was and he was like, "You have that song---it's on your B-sides disc." I had the Hits 1 & 2, but never bothered with the B-sides. redface After that, I played 17 Days non-stop for about two weeks straight and have been hooked on Prince music ever since. I joke that I don't really know which songs were released when b/c I learned them all by osmosis at Berlin.

I have so many great memories of 5 years of Prince nights there...it is one of the few things I miss about living in Chicago. sad Although, I did hear a rumor that Berlin wants to continue Prince night..it won't be quite the same without Sam and Chad dj'ing though...

I can't believe I am crazy enough to fly into Chi-town just for this party, but I couldn't miss it...

So sad. I would schedule my vacations back to Chicago around this night. I thought it had been around forevah when I first started going and later realized I had pretty much been there from the get-go. Not knowing many of the songs and yet understanding that esp during the dark years 95-97 that Prince night had ALL of the new cuts and Jams. One of my favorite nights and certainly a Prince Staple in my life at a time...and I took many peeps there. Not to mention the many peeps I met there, like Ivy and Chris.

pray you will be missed!

Damn, that's ashame that after 13 years, the parties are being discontinued. I thought the same thing, that someone else should take over the parties. But who would be willing to do it? hmmm

see, that's just it. having someone take over for sam and chad would be like when the main character leaves a sitcom and they keep the show going and bring on some lame replacement character. even if it's a great actor, it hardly ever keeps the show from jumping the shark. better the chicago prince parties go out with a bang instead of a whimper, ya know?

nod I agree, and I know what you mean about getting a replacement actor when a main character quits a sitcom. It is not the same thing at all. For example, I didn't like the show "Good Times" after the actor who played the father left the show. He just added something to the sitcom. But anyway, not to get this thread off-topic, but just an example to let you know that I know what you're getting at. nod

Aww. sad In all the years, I never actually went to the party, but loved hearing the stories and seeing the pics. Although it's not on the same scale, it's kind of like here in Detroit when the Buzz Bar closed down late last year--there was a monthly Prince party there, too.

That is really too bad.
I felt the same way when Prince backed off of Glam Slam
and Erotic City (late at night upstairs)
Was sad when he gave up on the club all together...
BUT..... if its all about the Music and the dancing and meeting
other Fams.... Then it would seem to me that
ANY ONE could take over if they really wanted too..... right??
I mean anyone can spin Prince tunes??

I have heard of soo many Prince fans that have "given up" on Prince
this last year or so... and its Very sad....
Prince has SOO much talent and IF he would just put forth a
BIT of effort he could put out some Slammin' Music again!!!

i could say a lot in response to this post, but i'll focus on the positive (for a change)...

whatever's going on in prince's world right now, with his career, his relationship with his fans, his personal life, his religion, whatEVER, this sunday marks the end of an era and a milestone for many longtime fans who attended these great parties for years.

many people know how involved sam was in the whole scene, on more levels than just a few, and how much he contributed to keep the fan community excited and enthusiastic even when the vibes coming out of paisley park weren't exactly overflowing with joy and jubilation. sam kept the party moving for us, even during times when it seemed like the party was getting pooped for good.

no matter how divisive or dreary or non-eventful things would get...if it was during one of those breaks between albums, or if prince had just pulled the switch on his latest official web site, or if the fans were divided over some new controversial action committed by the artist often known as litigious, we could ALWAYS depend on being one big lovefest during the last sunday of the month, when the only thing that mattered was the music.

being all face to face, enjoying the music together, all the dumb shit didn't matter anymore. the internet flame wars, the chatroom tussles, the orgers vs. the Quakers (and, at one time, vs. the NPGMCers)...all that went out the window for a few hours every month, cuz we all realized we shared a love of the same music, and that was more important than all the stupid stuff we bicker about the other 30 or 31 days of the month. lol

so for that alone, sam should be commended. for 13 years he found a way to check the bullshit at the door and he got us on our feet, happy, and enjoying the good stuff that made us fans in the first place.

i've heard rumblings that prince night may eventually continue after this month's party, but i really hope that's not the case...or if it happens again, it's a significantly different creature instead of an attempt to continue in the footsteps of the last 13 years. cuz really, seriously...it's not gonna be the same.

this sunday is going to be deep, but i know for sure it's going to be one last chance to fam out with some of the best folks a guy could ever want to party with...and i wouldn't miss it for anything. bow

it just means that a lot of people will be showing up dressed in white. it's recommended to do so, but it's by no means required or enforced. i'm sure black and pink are perfectly acceptable wardrobe options. biggrin
