Okay, do ya'll even read what i write anymore? Or do you just see my name, read three words and react?

I started off with saying that i get that different people have different opinions. I never said that "Prince wasn't funky". I said in the truest definition of the GENRE OF FUNK, he's not taken that seriously and i maintain from that DEFINITION he's not that "funky".

I'm asking for an explanation from those who feel that Prince is one of the "forefathers" of "funk" as to how they arrived at that conclusion. I'm trying to figure out how some people arrived at this conclusion. I'm not necessarily saying it's "wrong", more than i'm saying i don't understand it.

Read what i'm writing, people!

but that's what i'm trying to get at. just because someone thinks that Prince's music is funky, how does that translate that he is the forefather of funk.

everytime someone offers their opinion that is not negative or favorable, you get all drama queen and take it and go overboard making it seem like we think Prince is a god or the maker of music, when someone is just offering their view.

I feel like i'm talking to a wall.

Funk was "damned near dead" when P came along?
REALLY?

And you get what i'm trying to say, Gray.
Not forefather in the sense that he created it, in the sense where he deserves to get mentioned in the same breath as George, Bootsy, Sly or James. Or Betty Davis.

It boils down 2 personal taste at the end of the day.
I'd rank Prince as 4th of time 4 FUNK. That's just me.

Okay.

Ah, but Prince is so much more than Funk alone, as well you know. not much more to say. Prince's eclectic as anybody out there and his catalogue speaks for itself.

Exactly, that's why I'm still a HUGE fan of his. His diversity is amazing but to me, funk is the foundation of his musical base. Even when he isn't doing a funk song, elements of funk find their way into the song. Whether he's a funk artist or not, that is debatable but one thing is true, Prince is one funky dude!

Now I'm going to sit back and watch all of you argue over this point. I need some Popcorn and pepsi!

Thanks for being open minded. Seriously, i'm not trying to get people all riled up.

I think you're right, i think that the word "funk" does get thrown around in here way too much. And in a lot of ways, it's okay. There's a difference in calling a song "funky" because it makes you feel a certain way. Like if a song makes you want to dance, it's "funky". I get that. And that's fine. Keep on saying it.

I'm speaking more to the people (coughfamscough) who use Prince's "funk" as a measuring stick against other artists. Namely and specifically Wendy and Lisa, to start. The Revolution as a whole. How they weren't "funky" and the band got so much "funkier" later on. Or when discussing Prince vs say someone like Van Hunt, Prince is "fonk" when Van isn't.

Lol...are u saying thw W&L was funky?

No, i'm not saying that.
I'm saying that Prince isn't dramatically funkier than they are.
That's my point.
I'm saying in the truest definition of the genre, Prince isn't even on the list.
And if some of you think otherwise, i'm trying to understand why.

Mix and match James Brown, P-Funk and Bootsy, Prince is 4th behind these cats.
Why? Cause my EARS and the inner place that music touches tell me so.

actually in reading your response to efan, you explained yourself better without the drama queen antics in your previous posts.

due to prince's diverse catalog i would not say he is all funk but there are funk elements in his songs which especially comes out during his live performances. just off the top of my head, theres joy in repitition, the ride, get on the boat, musiciolgy, dmsr, sott, glasscutter, the war, c-note...

Those are u words not mine. Prince is many things, funk just being one of them. That comment is laughable.

Number one, your own ears should be the determining factor, not someone elses comments or thoughts. Prince's FUNK can stand up 2 anyones. Just listen 4 yourself. There is no debate here. If u don't like it, so be it, but 2 come here and make such silly comments is well.....silly. Your point seems 2 be 2 riles folks up 4 absolutely no reason. Is there a point 2 this?

See, here we go. I'm not belittling anyone's opinion. I'm not calling what you're saying "silly". I'm not trying to rile anyone up. I'm asking you and anyone else that puts other artists down for not being as "funky" as Prince to explain this position.

My ears are just fine. I was born in DETROIT. Believe me, my ears know FUNK when they hear it. And where Prince has occasionally done some stuff that could be defined as "funky" MAYBE, in the purest sense of what the GENRE IS, he's NOT the "bearer of the funk". Some of you act like he is, and i seriously want to know WHY.

This is one of those threads, where if you want to get into a track by track comparison i'm all for it. But i'm going to be using REAL "bearers of the funk" as a measuring stick, so beware.

Are you saying that by being born in Detroit you are somehow an expert on "Funk"? That's so incredibly elitist.

I love Prince, I do, but he's not the keeper of the funk. I think some people don't really know what funk is.

That's my point. I'm getting a little tired of people using "funk" as a reason why Prince is better than [blank] when i maintain Prince isn't that "funky".

Not in the truest definition of what "funk" is.

So what is the "truest definition of what "funk" is"?

You keep saying you know Prince ISN'T....but you don't say what IS.

Please don't name bands/artists. What are the charactistics of the music that make it true funk?

Frankly, Prince isn't "taken seriously" by a lot of people, so the "fact" that Detroit funkateers don't take him seriously is not a weighing factor IMHO.

I've never looked at Prince as the keeper of the funk, just as having a funk element and honestly, IMHO, Prince himself gives himself and his music acclaims it, I don't want to say hasn't earned, but I guess that's what I'm saying.

Before a project is even released....

"It's controversal!!!"

"An INSTANT Prince classic!!!" (I don't believe in "instant" classics...peeve of mine)

Or the parties at his house. They are whipped up to be SUCH a big deal, fans pay hundreds of dollars to go to his house (granted VERY COOL!!) wait forever into the wee hours of the morning, on their feet with no food water or bathroom break lest you lose your stage position, for less than 2 hours of a set list he's been rotating for at least 5 years. The show is in a level room so if you are not right up front you ain't seeing shit.

blahblah

For someone who wants it to be "all about the music" Prince hypes his music and himself up HORRIFICALLY. (IMHO)

He does back up his hype with great live performances and solid cd's, so his talent is not in question.

In the end for each individual it boils down to their opinion. Opinion does not have to be based on fact. You can still have an opinion when fact proves it wrong. Opinion is a preference to some degree. One can love Prince because he's "more funky" than whomever....it's their opinion. You don't have to like it or agree with it.

I'm not saying that simply because i was born in Detroit that makes me an expert. But if you're around something longer than most people, if you're around it when it's created that you might be a little more qualified to speak on it. There are "funk experts" that aren't from Detroit. Hell, Bootsy isn't from Detroit! Neither was JB! Shit, there are experts on the funk all over the globe. Come correct, now!

Are you kidding me? A simple synth bass line with him and Sheila doing some shit? I like the song, but you'd hold that up as #4 behind anything from George, Bootsy, Sly or Betty?

I'll give you that Exodus was probably the closest that Prince ever got to real funk. But that was ONE album, and certainly doesn't place him #4 in the genre, does it? There's got to be more than that?

I'm not going to act like I am an expert in all things Funk cause I'm not but to me, I hear funk in songs like Endorphinemachine, Interactive, 2 songs that aren't funk. I hear it in the bass on those songs. Those are the only songs that I can find off the top of my head (I'm at work). For me, I feel the funk in his bass and drums. They get me to groove and move in a way that I don't move with other music. Maybe that isn't funk to you but it is for me.

BP, i understand what you're saying, and i agree with it to a point, but i think it's a case of 'the orger protests too much'.

i don't consider prince to be a funk artist either. i think he's a mainstream pop musician. he's taken elements from many different genres and fused them into his music. nothing wrong with that. but i wouldn't call what he does traditional funk. i don't think HE would call what he does traditional funk.

but i do think there are obvious nods to funk in more than a few of his songs. do those nods stand up with what those in the funk community consider to be the holy grail recordings of funk? oh, probably not. but so what? an homage is an homage, and influence is influence, regardless of how the end result comes out.

mick jagger was obviously influenced by the blues, but do you consider him a bluesman? he's a pop performer, though you can see and hear the music that influences him. the rolling stones wouldn't stand up to the blues hall of fame greats, but that's not the point. they set out to be a rock band, not blues pioneers. but is that a reason to completely dismiss the part of their sound that is influenced by blues?

i think it's a similar deal with prince and funk. sure, the funk is diluted as hell in prince's music, but i also think he uses funk as an INGREDIENT and not THE RECIPE.

i will say that sometimes prince has bugged me over the years when he'd go on and on and on in interviews about a new song or a new album that's supposed to be "oh so funky...i mean FONKY...oh lawd..." and i finally hear the music he's talking about and i'm like "EH?!" confuse

maybe he's a little too close to his own music to always know what he's talking about, but if he's not funk, he's certainly had some close brushes with funky.

I know Anx. I get why Prince does it and i know in his mind he's "the fonkiest man on the planet". And i know that Prince used elements of funk in his music, and to be honest for a pop musician he's probably the BEST at that.

Again, i was speaking more to the Prince fan/fam who seems to act like Prince is so "funky" that they turn their noses at other artists for not being as "funky" or even worse, like penalize Wendy and Lisa for "holding him back from the funk"? I don't understand it, and i'm just trying to figure out where that comes from.
