GoldExp and Dewrede, I'll tell you what the poster sumtymes is most likely referring to, here's a little history of it. Sumtymes is referring to a poem, called "Strange Fruit", which was later turned into a song, and also writtened by a Jewish schoolteacher named (Abel Meeropol) (1937),who became disgusted when he saw photographs of the lynchings of 2 African-American males in Indiana. The song was first sung by Meeropol, his wife, and African-American singer, Laura Duncan at Madison Square Gardens.

Then a few years later, sung by the late Blues Singer, Billie Holiday in 1939, at one of the first integrated nightclubs in NYC. It has also been sung by other artists like, Nina Simone. Abbey Lincoln, Tori Amos, Carmen McRae, Sting, UB40, opera singer Shirley Verrett and Cassandra Wilson. It's an eery and haunting song, but much truth to it. The song lyrics has been posted on the P&R forum many times when discussing race topics:

So apparently, the poster Sumtymes, in my opinion, is basically saying to not let all this "madness" turn into a "lynch mob" for an artist who has given so much of his creativity, musically and at the same time contributed in revolutionizing the art of music over the years and still continues to bring us great music.

STRANGE FRUIT
(by Albert Meeropol)

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
"

that sigh was just for this madness in general. As an African-American I would never make light of any issues concerning the fight. Thanks for the explanation though wink

Whew....this whole PFU thing is simply madness. For me it's always been about the music and not the personality. This whole PFU effort, though at first glance seems a good idea, is in reality only harming the image of the very artist it claims to admire. As a lifelong Prince fan i've spent countless hours and dollars amassing the man's music but it was all free will and he owes me nada. It's really silly to even think he does. The music down through the years has made me smile, laugh, dance, contemplate, relax, emote and overall make this incarnation a lil more enjoyable...thats payment enough for me. All this whining and bitching is tired and lame imo. So with that i part...it's been fun. I hope you guys find what you are searching for. Me? Im gonna sit back and continue to enjoy the ride and the music for as long as he feels the need to share. Lata.

As a man of no color, who is educated and sophisticated, I can see that it's not a modern day lynching, but a response to a rich rock star who likes to threaten "unofficial websites" with high priced, evil lawyers because they are not "official websites." Mr. Prince also does not understand copyright law, as he's going after "all pictures", even ones he does NOT own the copyright to. Moreover, he doesn't like people having negative opinions about him and his music, and he wants to shut that voice up.

Any normal, intelligent person would side with his fellow human being, a human being on their level -- the creators, moderators, and users of this forum. To side with someone in a completely different class than you (Prince), who would sue you for no reason, is absurd.

where did Prince state that he did not want negative opinions of him?

Good old free speech.

A right worth defending.

And that is where you are confused, it has NADA to do with free speech.

what about good ol'fashioned capitalism, the right to defend what you worked for?
Copying and pasting someone else's work against the authors permission has NADA to do with free speech, it has nada to do with your rights, and the youtube baby has nothing to with this either most of you are old enough or are smart enough to know that.

Writers are on strike some of you may know, they want among other things, a percentage of money made with streaming of online content, a way of transmitting their work that was not foreseen a years back, which will become a lot more common, maybe even commonplace,.....and others unions are behind them and Hollywood has basically shut down.

Madonna and Radiohead decided that they would go another route in the distribution of their work, hopping they would actually make money on touring instead....they seem to have thown up their hands and hopes of making money on albums sales now because its so easy to copy and share their material for free.

That IS the point.

Prince is taking you selfish pricks on.... and I for one commend him and applaud him for once in the longest time.

Prince IS a prick, ...I hope this situation wasn't what made you hip to that, only because it affected your nerdy pic posting infatuation,..... that would just be selfish and silly.

I really hope he caves in and lets you post his picture so your life will be complete. biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin

What has becomed skewed in the US and around the world is the Capitalism is the be all and end all when it comes to rights.

Capitalism and the "right" to free trade and all that goes with it is largely to blame for many ills of the world.

That industrial plant is a producing a good and to protect the owners of that plant the govt's allow it to continue to pollute our planet.

That coporation is entitled to free trade, so they can go to wherever it is tolerated and produce a toy that they charge $29.99 for , but cost $9.00 to make including the $.30 they give the 10 year old in their sweat factory to produce it.

Don't throw Capitalism into the ring. NO ONE here is arguing or has EVER argued Prince's right to protect his product.

Give me a break, because your black you read this as a lynching? God damn! How can you even compare this to a lynching? That's a disgrace.

The man is not getting lynched, he's being an egotistical greedy celebrity. He wants ordinary 9-5 workin' people like Ben to pay up for posting some photos of him. He needs to stop trying to control his image.

God says we were created in His image, so perhaps God should sue us in court for walking the Earth?

I agree with Raisefour the originator of this thread. It's always been about the music with Prince for me. His celebrity stuff (his clothes, style, and his personal life) don't really interest me. Don't get me wrong his antics are amusing but as Ben and Raisefour have mentioned a seasoned Prince fan(m) has to learn to seperate the two issues, one is the music he creates and everything else. I love listening to his music for the first time and seeing him perform in concert. However anyone that's followed him for a long time (for me it's 1982), knows to separate the 3 ring circus from his output as a musician and as an artist. As he mentions in the past people with a real mind will peep this out. On an aside I do feel how he conduct himself in relation to his fans is stupid but I really don't care about that, I want him to make his music and I'll keep my interest at that!

What I see happening in the future is this:

New laws to control copyright issues for musicians and newer laws governing freedom of speech...

The internet has changed many things and the current laws are still OLD and need to be changed to step up to the fast paced progress of the internet.

Well, let me see if I can clarify it for you. Until very recently, I enjoyed the music (well most of it anyway) for 29 years. I've had many wonderful experiences being a Prince fan. A lot of which occurred after becoming a member of this and the other fan communities. The very reason that I can't seem to enjoy the music as I've done for so long is because of the man and his bullying of these communities that I also enjoy.

If no one stays and speaks out for the right of sites like this to functionally exist, let me ask you this...where else could we go to enjoy the subject and talk about the music?

you are going overboard, in my opinion. i do not believe that these sites were going to shut down and even if they do, to say that there is no where else we can talk about Prince and his music is overkill. Unless someone can point it out to me, i do not recall Prince stating anywhere or these letters that we cannot discuss his music or even criticize him or his music.

what we have here is a dispute over the use of pictures and an artist who wants control. what i gather here,is that the Internet and the use of the Internet has evolved but the laws have not and everyone is confused. that is why I wish this would go to court so that a decision can be made and we can move on with that decision, though I do understand that financial limitations may have prevented the Sites from doing so, but now that they have banded together, hopefully both sides have adequate legal representations to make their case.

i'm with everyone's right to support the cause because some of Prince's request, but i guess everyone is different and I dont see the point, after you have made yourself clear, to logon to a website everyday to engage in negativity and anger, everyday when you don't care about the artist. sorry just find that bizarre.

You are correct in your statement that I am a grown ass woman and as such, if I take my money and purchase a license plate that says PR1NCE or I pay to get a tattoo of his face on my left ass cheek and decide to take a picture of it and post it for all the world to see. That's my business and I own the copyright of said picture!

Prince might not like it but he has no right telling the site that I post it to, that it's a violation of his copyright because it isn't!

If Prince has a problem with his images being on this site then he should have a problem with all of his images being on the internet and everywhere else for that matter because he is not being paid for every single picture that has ever been taken of him.

With that said...no, I'm a long way from 12 but it seems to me that you're not, so please do not reply to me until your mentality has at least finished puberty.

'K, Thanks!
