hey don't sweat it-I got my chops busted in HS in 1984-86 for being a massive Prince fan at a time where he was everywhere. People I didn't even know knew me as the "Prince girl" and I went to very big, inner city HS. Of course, it could have been because I wore lace gloves and purple all the time too! lol lol
Anyway, I guess my point is that it wasn't that much different being a fan even back in the day. He has always been primarily a "love him or hate him" type of artist, there is rarely any middle ground.
Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"
They've taken a lifetime lease on Paisley Park ...music

Phew... u hit the nail right on the head.
Although, with my dad, he is pretty much on the middle ground. He likes him a lot and greatly respects him, but he's not on the same level with me (and everyone else here). Of course, he's older & wiser and knows when "enough is enough," that kind of thing.

But it's true. You either like or hate him and it's hard to change one's mind if they already have a strong opinion about him being any number of "negative" things. And you have to accept a lot of things about him b4 you're offically "in," I guess. I know it took me a little while to get used to his lyrics and content or whatever... but I pretty much love everything he does now unless its very hip-hop/rap orientated or just blah... very few of those.

I wish I had ur confidence, guys. I mean, I want to spread the word that I'm crazy about him, but 1) I want to be known 4 being more than just "the Prince girl", haha... and 2) once I get started, I'll keep bringing him up. Kinda like "word vomit"... and I fear annoying people by doing so.
All I really need, I think, is to custom-make my own Prince Tees... I just need to figure out what I want them 2 say. That's an idea I've had in the works 4 a while (mentally).
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I cant say I hate my generation but I can say they need to learn some music.

And btw here are some of Plies's lyrics ..

Pointed At The Donk & Told Her This Supposed To Be Yours
Showed Her A Couple Stacks & Told Her I'd Let Her Blow It
The Hottest Nigga In The City Baby You Can't Ignore It
I Showed Her I Was A Real Nigga & She Went For It
First Time I Caught Her Shit, She Aint Even Know How To Throw It Back
Now She An Animal, I Got Her Sex Game Right

--

Look How That Pussy Sit Up In Them Shorts, You Gotta Want Her
Love When She Act Like She Bo-Legged & Bend The [Corner ?]
She Proud To Be Fuckin Me, Cause I'm Stuntin On her
It Feel Good To Be Fuckin A Real Nigga Don't'uh

I'm 16 and I dont get half of the stuff he's saying, Let's just say if a dude ever came up to me like that , I'd have a fit. "Bend the corner" .. "brought her a donk?" WHAT!?!?

And if you ever need some "young people" lingo translation, im here lmao. Anywho, I do agree with most of you, I mean I do have the "fuck it" attitude, I don't care whether a person is a prince fan or not, but I just hate the ignorant remarks, it gets annoying , its like "Okay I know , I'm a Prince fan ; I dont care about your opinion" . I've had people jerk back and say, "Oh He's gay!" - and that one remark is supposed to change my WHOLE view on Prince.

I'm known as the "Prince & myspace girl" as for now in my school. Lame right ? lol. I'm proud that I like Prince .

- And DreamPopRoyalty ; haha I sooo wanna make some Prince shirts now. Haha, They should say , "I LOVE PRINCE : WELCOME TO GENERATION P" (P as in Prince) < okay the shirt saying is lame but I cant think right now lol.

That's because in the years you are referring to, Prince had changed his style. In 1984, everyone loved him and it was cool to like Prince. In the albums that followed "Purple Rain", Prince had changed his style and it was no longer cool to like Prince.

However, when I was in junior high and high school, I was a huge Prince fan. This was the years before Prince had any pop fans and he was strictly known in the R&B world only. From 1980 to 1984, if you were are an R&B fan, Prince was the coolest thing on the radio. 1985, and especially 1986 made Prince no longer cool with the general public.

No, it didn't always used to be like this. Prince was well loved by the general R&B public for many years in the early 1980s.

On a more serious note, I think it's all about the facade for a lot of teenagers. They view today's rap as "hard" and "real", and like hiding behind its perceived toughness. Music with real emotion is just too vulnerable. More and more, it seems music has become more of a name brand to youth than ever.

I always say... if they are already see him a certain way, there's really nothing u can do. They'll never join our ranks.

1 can't really bcome "one of us" unless u follow this neat little theorem I made up:

Admiration+Acceptence=Amazement

You have had a certain admiration for his talents & dedicaton and u have to accept him for who he is & the kinds of material he writes... and u'll eventually become amazed by everything he does.

I disagree as I used to see Prince in a negative light before I was "enlightened" wink It was probably due to his image in the press during the mid-eighties but once I started listening to the music and ignoring the hype I realized what a talented guy he really is. I slowly began to get into his music around Parade and by the time of Lovesexy I had his entire back catalogue.

Funny, I'm still young at 25 but at school as a teenager Prince was really popular. Not like "everyone is a big fan" popular, but really respected when talked about and this was like Come/Gold Experience/Chaos & Disorder time.

I am 17 years old, became a Prince fan at about 13 years old. I just got into an argument with my fellow jazz band members at school. I gave them a lesson in being a true funk soldier...lol But seriously, surprisingly most of my friends and including freshmens, sopohmores and juniors respect Prince and like him: P Funk, Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, The Whispers, etc. Most of my friends respect his talent and actually like him. But there are some who think Kanye West (which I still don't understand why he is a great artist, got into an argument with someone today about how all he does is use other people's songs to integrate into his own. He think's he's more talented then he really is. Those are "remixes" not original material), 50 Cent, Ciara, Rihanna (sorry don't see the big deal), JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE (you already know...lol), Chris Brown, etc are the greatest artist to ever walk the Earth. It upsets me that as teenagers we are so misinformed and just go with the crowd. I always challenge my friends to listen to something new: not just Prince, but just to go out of their comfort zone and not limit their horizons to MTV and BET and the Top 40 list. My father always subjected me to old school, that's what I grew up with and that's what I respect and listen to. Not saying that you don't have some gems now (Alicia Keys, Beyonce I like her, Musiq Soulchild...etc.) But overall music as well as t.v. has went down. As teenagers we need to know that, and respect the pioneers.

But I do feel that the whole "youtube" thing is bugging kids, plus his sort of "old style" messages. Prince from the 1980's and 1990's grabs most of my friends.

Well musically it wasn't too difficult to get into Prince as I was already listening to JB, Sly & Parliament and in the period 86-87 I think these influences started to show in his music. That's probably why I began to listen more.
As far as his image goes, I admit that I was slightly put off by his public persona as I don't really like all of that "star" hype. I suppose I just separated Prince the musician from Prince the "percieved" person. Just because I like his music doesn't mean I have to like him, I don't know the guy so how could I comment either way? He makes mistakes in his business and private life like all of us but that's none of my business. As long as I still enjoy his music and live shows I get all I need or want from the guy.
I admit converting folks is difficult as he has a SERIOUS image problem with a lot of people. I have managed to convert about 3 in the space of 20 years, not a fantastic hit rate I agree. Most people though are unwilling to try anything new, no matter which artist you play to them. If it's not on daytime radio or on MTV then they're not interested. I've actually heard people call certain artists "crap" without even hearing a note of the music. To them record sales equate quality and if an artist is not in the charts they must be no good. Sad but true.

Thanx for sharing. It's always interesting to get perspectives from the other people here (and the people they know). I think for me, just the hardest thing to really get used to... probably just his use of curse words and the really heavy-sexy content... cuz I'm not used to all that myself. Even though I'm surrounded by people that curse all the time (welcome 2 college, haha), I wasn't quite so used it, but my mouth is clean. Now when I hear him curse, it's like... "was that a breeze?" Bounces off me like rubber. And the songs that took me a while 2 get used to were Darling Nikki, and a few other TGE tracks.

Nothing on "Dirty Mind" really rattled me too much, so that was pretty much a sign that I was pretty much used 2 everything he could dish out. "Do me baby" took just 2 listens for me to warm up to it (now its one of my fav's). And Automatic was really nothing after all that. It just makes me worry about his "sanity" when he wrote it, haha.
But then came Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic. I haven't gotten back 2 that album since... the way he dressed and the types of songs on there, I felt like I really didn't know him anymore. That's when I get a bit distant... and there's his image problem right now.
But I enjoy how it has changed over the years. The diff. outfits and hairstyles. But Rave is definitely the more bizarre period he went thru. I'll get back 2 u guys after I hear it another couple of times.

Yup yup, he's a real poet alright
falloff

Oh yes his lyrics touched me deeeply -_- lmao.

Dirty Mind was really good. The first time I heard it, I could just tell that it was a huge moment for him. When he shed his "safe" image and really put a lot out there.
I think the cleverest thing he had was the huge change after "Uptown". The other songs didn't really fit the image I was thinking of, considering its called the "Dirty Mind" album... but after Uptown, things just took off and got me by surprise. That was an amazing move on his part! "Head" doesn't do it 4 me like it used to... but "Sister" is one of my favorites... I wish he'd made it longer, but part of me thinks "It might be better if he didn't"

haha... yeah, i've come up with good lines about him in my poetry (written 19 about him since the beginning of my "journey"). But I'll probably do three. One explaining my u/n, one about his policy on the word "fan"... and one another about how I feel about him... can't think of anything clever now. But I'll let u guys know what I come up with.
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

And I AM one. I don't understand how people my age would rather spend money to hear someone talk about their bitches and ho's , then to hear someone talk about Love & Life ? It's just so >< lame ?

- My rant is caused by school today. Me & my friend got into an argument; she said Prince is the most wanna be white person since Michael Jackson & that he has wack music. But this lame ass rapper Plies is better .OMG I hate Plies he's sooooo stupid.

- But anywho ; maybe I'm just weird for liking Prince so much. And then they like to compare today's artist to Prince ; which is pointless considering he's a legend and most of the artists today don't even write their own music; but whatever.

- I thought I'd get this rant out to all you fellow Prince fans ; the "others" wouldnt understand.

I only read your post and nothing else in this thread, but let me give you sample of a Plies song, written by me.

haha... so my theorem has gone completely unnoticed.. shrug it was worth a shot. I thought the whole Admiration+Acceptance=Amazement thing was pretty good.

I really don't try to talk about Prince around "the ignorants" unless the conversation happens to be on music. Then I could bring him up, but I've only gotten that opportunity once (I got lucky that my ex-roommate happens 2c him the way eye do).

I don't know how many more ways I can spell it. Mainstream garbage is really 2 blame 4 the degradation of the industry. Just because he isn't popular on the radio, excuse me, the music he plays isn't popular on the radio, people my age and younger are missing out on sheer brilliance.

But at the same time, parents are partially 2 blame. I wouldn't have known about Prince the way I did w/o my dad's influence (u all know the story, he had me sit thru the movie even thu it was half over). But what I usually get is that parents that aren't really "artists" themselves really can't understand him the same way.

And you kinda have to understand him b4 u can get to know all of his music & the content. Otherwise... lets just say it wouldnt b pretty.

i have to say that i agree with you!! and i LOVED the whole admiration+acceptance=amazement. its absolutely brilliant!!!
Peace, Love, and some Purple Rain!!

Wow, when you thought it couldn't get any worse. Now match that up with:

He liked 2 frequent this club down up on 36th
Pimps and thangs like 2 hang outside and cuss 4 kicks (Did U see that?)

Talking 2 no one in particular, they say - "The baddest I am 2night"
4 letter words are seldom heard with such dignity and bite
All the poets and the part-time singers always hang inside
Live music from a band plays a song called "Soul Psychodelicide"
The song's a year long and had been playing 4 months
When he walked into the place
No one seemed 2 care
An introverted, "This is it," look on most of their faces
Up on the mic repeating 2 words over and over again
Was this woman he had never noticed before
He lost himself in the articulated manner in which she said them
These 2 words - a little bit behind the beat
I mean just enough 2 turn U on
4 every time she said the words
Another one of his doubts were gone
Should he try 2 rap 2 her?
Should he stand and stare?
No one else was watching her
She didn't seem 2 care
So over and over she said the words
Till he could take no more (No more)
He dragged her from the stage
And 2gether they ran through the back door
In the alley over by the curb he said - "Tell me, what's your name?"
She only said the words again and it started 2 rain (Rain, rain, rain)
2 words falling between the drops and the moans of his condition
Holding someone is truly believing that there's joy in repetition
There's joy in repetition {x4}
She said - "Love me, love me"
What she say? She said - "Love me, love me"
Joy in repetition {repeat till end}
Why don't U love me, baby?
Why can't U love me, baby?
Come on and love me, baby
Alright {x3}
All my wishes add up 2 one
Love me {repeat}
I wanna say it again
I think I wanna say it again
I'd like 2 go way up high and say - "Love me"
Ha ha, I'll say - "Love me"
"Love me"
There's joy in repetition

or MJ's:

I was wandering in the rain
Mask of life, feelin' insane
Swift and sudden fall from grace
Sunny days seem far away
Kremlin's shadow belittlin' me
Stalin's tomb won't let me be
On and on and on it came
Wish the rain would just let me be

How does it feel
(How does it feel)
How does it feel
How does it feel
When you're alone
And you're cold inside

Here abandoned in my fame
Armageddon of the brain
KGB was doggin' me
Take my name and just let me be
Then a begger boy called my name
Happy days will drown the pain
On and on and on it came
In the rain, and again, and again
Take my name and just let me be

How does it feel
(How does it feel)
How does it feel
How does it feel
How does it feel
How does it feel
(How does it feel now)
How does it feel
How does it feel
When you're alone
And you're cold inside

How does it feel
(How does it feel)
How does it feel
How does it feel
How does it feel
How does it feel
(How does it feel now)
How does it feel
How does it feel
When you're alone
And you're cold inside

Like a stranger in Moscow
(Lord have mercy)
Like a stranger in Moscow
(Lord have mercy)
We're talkin' danger
We're talkin' danger baby
Like a stranger in Moscow
We're talkin' danger
We're talkin' danger baby
Like a stranger in Moscow
I'm livin' lonely
I'm livin' lonely, baby
A stranger in Moscow

KGB Interrogatory (Russian to English translation):
"Why have you come from the West? Confess!
To steal the great achievements of the people,
the accomplishments of the workers..."

Hmm something just doesn't seem to add up about our generation does it? Hmmmm...lol neutral
