Planet Earth -- Parade era sounding, but not so much where I feel like he is chasing his old self. Great track!

Guitar -- Great piece of pop rock -- why is this not getting more radio play?! I can blast this and not be embarrassed if a non prince fan is listening. It is that good.

Somewhere Here On Earth -- Glad to see he isn't coasting on his slow jams anymore (ala Satisfied). This sounds jazzy, but is kind of a throw back to the ballads on For You and Prince. I loved it on the first listen, and appreciate the crackly sound he gave it in the studio.

The 1 U Wanna C -- Sounds like a jam session turned into a song, but would love to hear this live. It gets better with every spin. The chorus saves this song because as he is building up to it, it sounds like he is phoning it in. Once the chorus hit, I was like, "Oh, I guess he really does give a shit."

Future Baby Mama -- I was afraid because I liked it alot at first listen. Which ususally means it will be the first one I am "over". (ala Lolita). I heard it on the radio though, so if it is a hit great-- besides that, this track is just ok.

Mr. Goodnite -- When I heard this was rap I got scared. I thought of the other "Mr." song (Mr. Happy) and dreaded hearing this tune. Then I was happy when it was more Sexy MF/Gett Off rap than Mr. Happy rap. I dig this song! Mista' Mista'!

All The Midnites In The World -- Throwaway, but not totally irritating. I don't get this song. Maybe after 10 more spins I will love it. Jury is still out.

Chelsea Rogers -- Get this fucking thing on the radio -- get it in the clubs -- just get it out there! This song is amazing! I haven't felt this way in so long I forgot what it feels like to be surprised by Prince. "Ask her what she likes the most. She likes to talk to Jimmy's ghost." All I hear about this song is "Disco songs not sung by Prince". Listen to it-- he is ALL OVER it. He shares vocals sure, but this is a Prince tune. I heard he mashes it up with Sexy Dancer when he plays it live. Bring it! This is a stand out.

Lion of Judah -- I was expecting "Get on the Boat" or "Sacrafice of Victor", what I got was one of the greatest Prince songs of the last 15 years. No shit. I love Chelsea Rogers and I love this song for different reasons, but they both are the stand outs for SURE. Lion of Judah is one of those songs I didn't get at first, and now it is the first song I play when I listen to Planet Earth. If this is how he sounds when he collaborates with Wendy and Lisa, then Prince: COLLABORATE WITH W & L MORE!! This song is amazing. The chord changes alone are worth the price of admission. That little progression after the first verse -- I need more!!

Resolution -- Hated this song at first. Now -- need to hear it every time I put the CD in. It is almost as if half the album is a warm up and as he got more in the zone he got better. The last three tracks could be the first three tracks on a whole different album. This track in particular is a psycadelic rock tune that brings it slow and then leaves you saying, "We're done already?"

Bravo.
I wish u heaven

after the emphasis on melody, the thing that strikes me positively about this album is that the production feels warmer than the last two efforts. There's no painful guitar solo of 3121. No painful synth of Black Sweat.

I don't love the production, but nothing hurts my ears. Mild (but very important!) praise.

"Chelsea Rodgers" is really the only track i like, even though - or because - Prince is only a backup singer there, otherwise the other tunes from this EP...err sorry, from this LP are somewhere between OK, average and awful.

I think Prince should release only one album every 4 or 5 years, we'd have a really listenable LP then, he's not the inspired guy he used to be in the 80's. Period.

Disagree with everything you said except the last part, (and neither am I for that matter) but I love the Fishbone avatar.

After living with the album for a week, I've concluded that I really like this - Easily my favorite since Chaos and Disorder.

My only problem is that I don't like the last two tracks at all - After hearing all of the other diverse and fresh sounding tracks, these two feel too similar to eachother and feel deflated, especially coming after something as awesome as Chelsea Rogers.

Overall, I'm really happy with Planet Earth - Definitely much moreso than I've been with any of his albums from this decade.
I've seen the future, and boy it's rough...

Agreed. These two would make an excellent single. I've notice non-Prince fans heads turning wanting to know who's behind these jams.

I really like PE. It's a much better album than I had expected it to be and it is an improvement from 3121 and definitly 100x better than crapology. My fave tracks on the new album are Mr. Goodnight, Planet Earth,Lion of Judah, Future Baby Mama and Somewhere Here On Earth (which I absolutely love and can't stop listening to). I give it a 7.5/10. Good work P!

it was released here, in Argentina, and having played it in my car by a week and once with headphones, I think that is difficult to have one opinion yet.

It´s an album with the trademark of Prince (eclectic colletion of song, styles revisited, etc) , but this way works better (but I dont know if works better as a whole)... There are good melodies and the production changed making a warm and strict sound, and sometimes rough.

I dont mind the lyrics becuase it is not muy language (I have to read them, but no my interesting with Prince music), for a lot of people Prince is only about good music not so about lyrics, messages or intelectual level.. indeed its about his pasions in what he does.

This album needs a distance, not to be over-analysed, and then a relaxed approuch.... needs a time, more than others. A little above from 3121 and Musicology, but not as great as TRC. I am waiting for a new album concept by Prince, too.

"Guitar" by Prince

Has Prince finally become Elvis Presley? Both icons got their starts as highly sexualized musical rabble-rousers, bided their time during extended periods of confusion and indifference, and re-emerged triumphantly in middle age as national treasures. Nearing 50 and sounding more or less like a safe version of his old self, Prince is well on his way to extending the career Presley lost too soon. But now that the man who inspired Tipper Gore to start the Parents' Music Resource Center can star in the world's most-watched halftime show without (much) controversy, has he lost his old sense of danger? Of course he has, but there's still enough left over on Planet Earth to keep his comeback on track.

Like 2004's Musicology and 2006's 3121, Planet Earth is a self-conscious attempt to create what people expect a Prince album to sound like. In that regard, Planet Earth is an unqualified success. "All The Midnights In The World" is a sweet, simple pop song in the "Raspberry Beret" tradition, and "Chelsea Rodgers" smokes like a lost jam mistakenly left off Sign 'O' The Times. Elsewhere, Prince is still working overtime to prove—as if there were any doubt—that he can master any genre, whether it's jazzy balladry ("Somewhere Here On Earth"), strutting cock rock ("Guitar"), or sultry love jams ("Future Baby Mama").

So if Planet Earth walks like a classic and talks like a classic, is it a classic? Not really. It's unquestionably a fun record, but the pleasures are modest and superficial. The lack of ambition, surprises, and plain old weirdness means Planet Earth is conspicuously un-Prince-like where it matters most.

cool NWF's OFFICIAL REVIEW OF "PLANET EARTH":

eek Wow!!! This has to be one of the best Prince albums in years. Sure, it'll never reach the heights of his 80's work. But he's older now and more chilled out. Now he's just trying to make records to entertain the people. I must say I enjoy this album way more better than "Musicology" and "3121". It's great to hear Prince rocking out again. That's been a popular demand of many Prince fans for the past few years. Sure, we love the Funk and Soul, but it's been tried and true. Plus, the last few funky tracks havenn't been that funky anyway. I wouldn't rate those songs with "Let's Work" or something. But it is great to see the Rock/Pop side of Prince again since that's something that he can pull off nicely as well. I mean, the R&B slow jams are alright too, but sound somewhat familiar. That's not to say they're bad because these ones sound more enjoyable than on the last album. Not too much funk here though. In fact, the only remotely funky track is the disco-fied "Chelsea Rodgers". But that's OK.

And what's even greater is the return of Wendy and Lisa in the studio with our purple hero. While it has been a wet dream of mine (as well as many other orgers) to see a full-on Revolution reunion, I'll just be grateful that these 3 bothered to record together again. I'm assuming that they played together on "The One U Wanna C". If that is true then that's amazing. At first listen I immediately thought of the Girlbros. Beautiful sounds. smile

"Planet Earth" definitely gets one over on the last 2 Prince albums with it's energy, songwriting, and ROCK-OUT-WITH-YOUR-MF'N-COCK-OUT-ness!

This is Prince's worst album to date. The CD is largely uninteresing tetering on being boring. Prince as a recording artist could be a thing of the past if he puts out more releases like this one. I wouldn't recommend this album to anyone and regret spending $14.88 on it at Wal-Mart. I consider myelf a long-time Prince (music) fan and am extremely disappointed with his crappy songwriting and production on this release. Whats up with his voice? He sings many of the songs "off key", which is really sad. There are only about three decent tracks on this album and they are weak compared to most of his past releases.

Lemme guess, you're one of those fans who was expecting another "1999" or "Sign O' The Times". Look, he's probably not gonna create sequels of those classics, dammit. That's just the fact of the matter. Deal with it. But "Planet Earth" for all its merits, is a solid album showcasing more of the Pop and Rock side of Prince. Something that a lot of us orgers are very proud to see Prince do again. It's nothing spectacular like his 80's work, but it's a fun and enjoyable album. Even better than the last 2. You making a statement like this makes me question your very taste in music. Did you really LISTEN to the album or did you just hear it?

Or are you just making all this up to get attention? lol

You really need a reality check. 3121 is much better than PLANT EARTH. You need not question my taste in music and instead should question your own. Do not reply to my response because I'm not impressed by your undying devotion to Prince. It's off-putting and has clouded your judgment.

hmph! NWF does and says whatever he wants to whomever he wants.

And what I am saying is that you may not have enjoyed the album like you did with 3121 (for me it was vice versa). But to say that it's his worst yet makes me question your judgement of Prince and also wonder whether you really listened to the album. You're probably one of those die-hard funk fans that wanted nothing more than that but came up short.

Yeah, I'm a devoted fan. I don't agree with EVERY Prince album. But even at his worst he can still do stuff better than a lot of other artists.
