23 years - I remember the act of droppin' the needle of my 45" portable record player onto the B-side of "Let's Go Crazy" which became, IMHO, the greatest song of all time ---- EROTIC CITY. I was 12...

Only 16 years, I knew of him since 1984 with Purple Rain, but that is still more than half my life. I first went gaga over the video to cream in late 1991 as I was at the age where I still saw sex as something to be laughed at in secret, and here's Mr Prince dancing a mock orgy on stage with 50 scantily clad woman to a song that could be easily interpreted as the act itself. Within hours I was drawing pictures of him holding a guitar over his privates going "Cream" and it was my new favourite statement and actually REALLY started digging his music too. By Christmas I had the Cream, Gett Off, Thieves in Temple and Insatiable on Cassingles and a cherished CD copy of Diamonds and Pearls. By 1992 I had read several books and had most of his output to then and bought SYMBOL on its release date (October 16 1992 in New Zealand I think) and remember Sexy MF being on the news because of the lyrics.

I liked the Purple Rain album when my dad bought it. It was probably 1985 before I started listening to it all the way through, and I loved it.

Couldn't really say I was a fan (buying all his back catalogue and current material with my own money) until 1993 because that's when I left school and got my first job.

So, 14 years if I'm being strict about the word fan. 22 years if you class a fan as someone who loves 1 album.

7 years if you count being obsessive about collecting rare and bootleg stuff.

I love Soft and Wet, Sexy Dancer, and Still Waiting...but it wasn't until Dirty Mind that I totally knew I was hooked...My mom was not having it (8th grade), so I was a closet fan. By my sophomore year it grew into a guilty pleasure and after my first concert in 1983 with the bed on stage, Prince took on a whole new level....It's all a blur after that and I know I'll be a Prince fan 4ever...

Thanks P cool

I stopped keeping track when I passed the 12 yr. mark.

that as far as I can count up to.

i got my mam to buy me SEXY M.F in 92 . but werent really a fan then . was just a kid who thought it was cool cos it had swearing in it lol .. it was when i heard PEACH on the radio in 93 . that i thought i love that song i wanna get it . didnt know it was prince . but soon found out .. then CONTROVERSY was re-released as a single over here in the UK . i saw it on tv an got it . an then THE HITS 1 an THE HITS 2 for xmas 93 .. then the rest is history . i knew pretty soon after hearing them albums that i had to get every album/video/film b-side bootleg that this guy had ever put out an thats what i did . an thats what i done since . Princes music does that too alot people . he is addictive an grabbed me as a 13year old an had a hold on me since .. i loved the whole madness of the era aswell.i went to see him 1st time in concert in 95 .an just remember thinking about the gig 4 like a week after . an set off to school .but didnt bother going .just walked the streets on a high .. i remember GOLD was the last song played an it stuck in my head all the way home . i think everyone there realised that was a special song .. i didnt hear it on record til THE GOLD EXPERIENCE came out .. but it lived up to my expections an my memory of it .. lee

I've heard Prince's songs back in the early '80s with songs like Controversy, 1999, Little Red Corvette (when I was in grade school). By the time I heard When Doves Cry before the Purple Rain movie came out, I've become a Prince fan...for life!!
