well sub par, it's like bad jamiroquai .

cowboy I was expecting Jaykay to sing when I first heard it too.

This is a song Jamiroquai could have done,
but it isn't like Prince never did a song like this be4,even be4 Jay Kay!

It's gonna be a beautiful night,Sleep around,...

It's a great song,even after 1 listen.
And we all know we don't have 2 expect another Get Off or 319 these days wink

A lot of folks hear a similarity there, but I don't. I'm a player, and these R 2 entirely different basslines, other than the fact that they're both very 1977-1980 Disco Funk.

I totally hear a similarity. It was the first thing I thought of when I heard the song. nod I'm not saying it's the exact same bassline, just that it has the same sound.

thats a million disco bass lines from the late 70's! Daft Punk was just being retro as well. They mixed it all electronic. Prince performed it all old school live sound. Like most of this album.

I'm just saying that it specifically reminds me of that particular song. No other disco songs come to mind when I hear it. shrug

I forgot 2 mention that I'm surprised a lot of folks don't like the vocals, but that voice is perfect on this cut, and Prince's backgrounds R priceless... listen 4 the "might as well dance..." harmonies.

Song just KICKS. I love the slight reverb on the kick drum. It sounds like Prince on the drums 2 me... Only Sheila has that driving kick drum 4 on the floor thang, pushing the beat ever so slightly ahead. I think it's Prince.

okay... this song is straight up live musicianship old school disco. Nothing new, nothing to be compared to Madonnna or Jamiroqi... it's just straight up old school disco with nary a modern twist.

I don't know...that clipped, almost ska-like guitar and those New Orleansish horn solos are not something I ever heard in disco.

The only thing I don't like is that weird, jumpy turnaround toward the end.

Yes, those elements are deviant from the smooth studio effected cushioned sound of most authentic disco, and that's why I am tagging it a strong "live" style arrangment.

Is this song like "Billy Jack Bitch"? Because, if not, it ain't that synth/organ-stank "PHONK" that I miss from him.

No problem with that. I'm pretty good at keeping my expectations reasonable anyway. lol

I'm just intrigued by the things that are said about the bass line, because it really seemed to have been ages since he wrote a song around a bass line. Also, the ska-like guitar, brass, all that.

Agreed. Prince has invented a new music genre - ska disco! biggrin This track is actually quite eccentric with its live drums and ska guitars with the rest disco.

Slight shame about the generic soul singer lead vox tho. P seems to have a thing for them, and other than Rosie Gaines, I've never dug them.

don't get too hyped up about it yet. people are making out like this
is prince's best and most funky song in a decade.

in fact, it's my least fav song on the album and i would gladly see
it replaced with anything else.

it's not even a prince song, it feels like a protege song patched on
to the album. kinda like "beautiful, loved and blessed", but worse..

i like all the other tracks on the album but this one, nope no no no!
there's something very forced and directed about it. if it were him
on vocals perhaps it would be less grating.

however, i still think i'd prefer glasscutter on the album since it
would fit the flow of the disc more.

nod

all i'm saying is lower your expectations lol

i love those two songs far, far more than chelsea rodgers

lol

they are, incidentally, the two songs that improve the most when you
hear them on an actual authentic cd. the sounds on them come alive n
there is so much stuff going on in both compared to the 96kbps vers.

And yet still a pile of cack.

Thankfully I'd also included an audio rip of the SOTT DVD on my MuVo, so I could remind myself of what Prince is supposed to sound like (that killer "Forever In My Life/It" medley, for instance).

Crap songs, crap production, crap lyrics. Beyond self-parody.

Prince can throw Amy Winehouse's name around all he likes, but instead he'd better LISTEN to her album.

how on earth (PLANET EARTH MAYBE ROFL) is madonna "edgy"?

Let's see: employs cult producer (I love it how Prince fams pretend that Jacques LuCont and Mirwais are hit producers), tours with a show that consists of 90% new music, has KILLER dancers. Remixers beg to do her tracks.

(Versus Prince: stuck in a rut for 10+ years, now performing bland jazzrockfunk jams for elite crowds, relies on dumb publicity stunts to get attention, remixers refuse to touch his shit.)

You know, I mentioned before that I hoped Prince's music went in the Amy Winehouse direction. He was almost there with TRC/ONA, just had to take it more "old-school". Maybe on the next one!

In a side note to this, it may interest you to know that Akhenaton had himself represented in all statues and reliefs as being Androgynous.

Well, I think there's evidence to suggest he WAS a bit androgynous and the art of that period was distinctly more "realistic" so he was probably portrayed as he naturally was... rather than specifically asking to be portrayed as such.
