i like that line lol .. good little uptempo grooving funk/disco song . it reminds me slightly of FUNKY MUSIC from NEWPOWERSOUL .. but CHELSEA RODGERS is alot better .. this is the kinda song we know that prince could do in his sleep an he done this kinda think before .. but aint quite sure if he has ever done it as good as this .. i rate this high an hope he has a hit with it

Just a word about the stuff people are saying about this being like generic disco or something. It's idiosyncratic enough to be all Prince, the guitar chopping on the off beat sounds like a gospel clap, the horns are sliding all over the place like Jamaica funk, the drum beat rocks hard rather than the smooth groove of most 'disco' stuff. I do admit it breaks less rules than a lot of his stuff but I don't really care cos he does it so well, his approach makes it stand out, plus the lyrical content could only have come from him.
But again, that choppy guitar man, I have never actually heard that pure offbeat pattern on a disco tune. Anybody care to educate me?

Yeah, I didn't like the song all that much at first.

I mean, I'm not really crazy about any song where Prince duets with anyone... I prefer him solo.

But I respect what he was trying to do. The fact he brought back old-school music for just that one song was daring and kinda neat... can't help admiring him for it.

Getting off of the "Mr. Good-night"/"All the midnghts" vibe, it's hard to adjust to something completely different.

I like it, but I'm not super crazy about it.

Old School like Chaka's "I'm Every Woman". Nice horns and groove for those that love their 70's disco funk. Good tune though... After listening to this tune all the way through, I like it a lot. Very fun! break it down for the horns...

I like it but it's not as good as Tina's :square:biz

Great analysis, there's definitely more to this track than meets the ears. What I thought would become a throwaway has shown an unapparent depth to grow and become a really strong track.

Listening to the arrangement it's far far away from standard disco, whatever the horns are doing I haven't quite figured out but it definitely works. Don't get fooled just because it's 4 to the floor!

Chelsea wishes she could even come close to kissing the toes of "Just as Long as We're Together" from Prince's first album -- I mean, can you just imagine what a live performance of this song would be like today?!?

I was too young to be familiar with this album when it first came out. In 78 I was only 7 years old. I got into Prince the year after "I wanna be your lover" is what got my attention. But when I bought the album(For You) years later, everyone mentioned "Soft and Wet". What I loved was "For You", "In Love" and "Just as long as we're together" along with "I'm yours". But the music in "JALAWT" is phenomenal. A live performance would be mind blowing today.
