Prince has a VERY large fan base that will buy whatever he releases. This is what the recording and distribution industry are afraid of. He has full control of his career and music, and is setting a new standard of recording and distribution. He is truly showing artists today how they can be EMANCIPATED and free from the slavery (and its chains) of a record industry who cares about only the almighty DOLLAR, who leaves the artists and the fans without that which is God given; MUSIC!!! It is very interesting to note that for many years artists were "creatively strangled" by the record company executives with the A/R reps struggling to feed their families upon finding such creative artists.
In the end of that phase I the industry let alot of good A/R reps go and decided to band together to create even a more "creative stranglehold on artists" by signing to more stringent contracts... the only thing is... The industry forgot that eventually if you strangle enough artists people get wise and learn to... become INDEPENDENT in their CREATIVITY to get out of the noose towards freedom... With Mp3 and the newest technologies... artists are now becoming un-indebted to the record industry and breathing a scent of freedom like never before. The industry is trying very hard to figure out how to feed themselves, since they pretty much "screwed" themselves, pardon my language but true... Well, KARMA comes around and artists are now becoming Free like they are supposed to be... having the ability to DO WHAT THEY WANT TO DO, SINCE it is THEIR RIGHT TO DO what they can do with their GOD GIVEN talent naturally! Therefore, AMEN to creativity and the ideas that emerge from having the "Balls" to do what you want to do with YOUR creative Music so everybody can hear it around the world, even in a day! So with that being said, DO WHAT YOU WANNA DO to let your spirit GET FREE with the talent you have. I agree with what Prince is doing completely, not because people think I agree just because he is doing it but for the simple fact... HE SIMPLY IS BECAUSE HE CAN! GODBLISS, promisekept. New to the group so first HELLO all.
I am in the UK and I have to say I am seriously excited by this prospect. Personally I think it's a great move by Prince too. Musicology and 3121 didn't get to nearly that many in the UK and although Radio 1 talk about him from time to time they don't pick up his music to give it to the millions that listen to them. In fact so many people are completely unaware in the UK that Prince has even been making music for the last 10 years or so. This release, any associated publicity and the tour should inform a few people that not only is Prince still making music he is still HOT. Love it! Have you had your + signs today? | |

i think this is a freakin brilliant idea.
these days, people can get free music via P2P, so instead of depending on retail sales that aren't happening anymore, prince got paid for 2 million copies bought by the newspaper to be distributed for free. this makes prince look like a good guy to music fans, and it gets him nice and paid. win/win. he knows his albums don't sell to the general public the way they used to, so he has the "wiggle room" to experiment with his new studio releases and find new ways to get his music into people's hands. good for him. | |

well, the record stores act like they didnt benefit from his album sales in the past. he doesnt owe them anything, they got paid off of his 20 or so other albums, its his music..put it out there as he sees fit. | |

Well, I know what you're saying from a financial standpoint. But if it's pissing off those in charge of his distrubution and music retailers, I can't see the positive aspects of that. He has a reputation for not playing friendly with suits, so this isn't exactly a new thing. But the friends that he'll lose at Virgin Megastore or Sony probably won't add up to the fans he'll reach with this current phase of his career in the UK. Yeah, he does seem to be burning bridges with retail on this decision, but that makes me think...we saw Tower close down last year...we're seeing the Virgin Megastores chain close down as we speak...Coconuts is gone...Best Buy is cutting back their music selections...really, the only wrecka stows surviving right now are the independent specialty shops, and the people who keep those stores open right now aren't gonna go to Footlight Records, Other Music or Reckless in search of the new Prince CD. A big chunk of his retail audience got turned away when the Towers and Virgins locked their doors, and the rest of em are already wise to the fact that they don't have to pay $20 for a 10 song CD at Barnes & Noble. I think that the things that hurt him in the 90's are the same things that will sustain him in a historical sense as a pioneer at the forefront of technology, distribution and marketing. This shows, without a doubt, that Prince is on the cutting edge of music distribution experimentation. After the Musicology giveaways, he's upped the ante.
By Sunday evening, 2 million homes in the will own a Prince CD. Have any of his albums sold 2 million? Then add the 400,000 on from the O2 shows, and he's seriously spreading the music. Planet Earth could be in 5%+ of the counntry's homes. Free the music? Yep, he's done it. |

Hmm, yeah I remember that. Those were the days, well, about 5 mins ago when I purchased a ticket for about £35 in the lower tier of the 02 Arena - cheaper than any other major act playing there.
