A little explanation:

Prince wanted this concert to be in Holland, but there was no indoor concert-hall where the round stage fitted in. So, the concert took place in Germany / Dortmund, but initially tickets were solely sold in Holland. The show didn’t completely sell out in Holland, so after a while tickets for the right side of the arena were sold in Germany. Yes ... the Dutch and the Germans were separated.

There’s a big rivalry between the Dutch and the Germans (partly due to World War II / partly due to the soccer world tournament in 1972 / partly just out of tradition) ...

Holland had defeated Germany in the European soccer tournament recently before the concert. So thousands of Dutch people in a German arena just after winning the European soccer tournament:
Yes, they were shouting "Holland!" a lot!

something tells me that didn't end up in any of per's books lol

thanks for letting us know about this... and someone pass it on to per smile

It also explains why Prince is yelling "EUROPE" instead of "Germany", "Dortmund" or "Holland" at the Dortmund concert!

(A second reason might be the live broadcast of this show in Europe)

yup its' The D. (Detroit). it's why he's shouts us out on Dance On (Lovesexy). Even Morris caught on in The Walk where he says, i want all of Detroit city to stand up, clap your hands...

We get EVERY domestic tour, and even surprise gigs like his famous b-day show at Cobo. The Electrifyin Mojo set it off way back in the day fa sho! He'd play the extendeds, and even play stuff back to back to back. True radio pioneer. i miss "real radio" (sigh). i remember hearing his interview with Prince on the air! talk about a rare treat. And he knows he HAS to come to the city, and NOT the Palace of Auburn Hills. if he does, he has to do both. it's about The Joe or Cobo. He played 7 Purple Rain shows at The Joe. Insane!

Is that what they were shouting during "Blues in C"? I always thought it was a little rude, as their shouting didn't seem to have anything to do with the song, but I just chalked it up to an enthusiastic crowd.

New York is cool because you get to see him for free every few years on the morning news shows. I think I've seen him four times that way, and I can even spot myself in the crowd in youtube's '96 clip.

Definitely think he does best in US Cities, which is why it seems for the past 2 years he's been staying and performing most in the US lately, especially the direction he's taken with his music lately..just my 2 cents.

That may be true, and you're entitled to your opinion as I. When was the last time he's been in Europe other than the Versace appearance, Brit Awards, UK Hall of Fame? He doesn't seem to stay in Europe or outside the US for too long when he does make those appearances; it's usually quickie performances, if any at all. I'm sure Europe and Asia are ready to see him make a return, but we'll just have to wait and see when he feels like making an appearance there. Maybe they'll get lucky in 2007 or 2008. Maybe they'll be as fortunate as the US fans have been and get a chance for him to do a long stay there and multiple performances. Then again, many travelled over here to 3121. I met a lot of nice fans from Holland and Japan and Germany last weekend of March at the 3121 club, so some Europeans/Asians, etc, have been fortunate to make it over here to see him perform.

It's not opinion sweety.
Prince did more shows to bigger crowds in Europe all the way up him deciding it was time to safeguard his legacy by finally spending some quality time in the US and getting some crowds over there.
So after ONA, he moved to Hollywood, got on every TV show he could find, invented the "real music to inspire the kids" idea, gave an entire CD away for free and did a greatest hits tour.
He then bought a house in Hollywood, wined and dined the media even more, and set up shop in Vegas.
All impressivly executed to finally get some US audience again.

Whoa, sweetcakes lol , hold it down now, this isn't a contest, just my opinion of what city is best to see Prince live, nothing personal. If you feel he does best where you reside and performed with a larger crowd, then kudos to you.. lol that's cool, but I'll stick with my opinion of where he performs best. lol Maybe one day he'll make it back to your neck of the road...(smooches.. biggrin ).

Sorry if that came off a bit strong, i really didn't mean it that way smile
But I really wanted to explain to you that for Prince to not tour outside the US is something new to Prince's career, unheard of before Musicology.

Ok, that's cool, I'm sure one of these days he'll make his way back there as I know he has many fans in Europe and Asia that's been coming over to the US to see him perform for the past year. Maybe he'll get over there sometime this year or the following, especially with all the speculation of "Planet Earth" on his website. Who knows..maybe it's a world tour, you just never know with Prince.

I have to listen to it again ...
but I only remember calling "HEY - HEY" during "Blues in C" on the beat, but because of the accoustics of the concert-hall it's getting less and less simultaneous

Did Prince take "Purple Rain" tour overseas? Did he take his 2000-2001 "hit 'n run" tour overseas? Did the tour for "1999" go overseas? I was just wondering.....

Hope you didn't spend too much time looking that up.
You realise that when Prince was at his most interesting, he hardly toured the US at all, right?
Not Prince's fault tho ... when Prince went heavy Avant Garde after Purple Rain, the US audience stopped understanding and Europe started listening. Saw a lot of Lovesexy shows? I didn't think so.

I've never seen him play outside of Minneapolis (unless Chanhassen and St.Paul count as outside). He definitely has a soft spot for his hometown.

I cast my vote for MINNEAPOLIS.

I am not sure if you are trying to be rude, but--I was just questioning the statement "...for Prince to not tour outside the US is something new to Prince's career, unheard of before Musicology..." because I didn't think it was true.

As far as Prince at "his most interesting" just like the tongue in your mouth--it's all a matter of taste. Thanks for being polite though.....

Saw a lot of Lovesexy shows? I didn't think so.

BTW---I live in Minneapolis--so if you really want to compare notes on what Prince shows/experiences you have had versus mine, by all means be my guest....girls first.....
