Also, I believe that site i linked to mentions that you CANNNOT ALTER a song without permission of the PUBLISHER. E.g. WEird AL needs permission from Prince if we wants to change the lyrics etc. to one of his existing songs,

Wrong. He doesn't need to, because it's a parody. Sheesh, looking this up takes mere seconds:

http://www.weirdal.com/faq.htm

Does Al get permission to do his parodies?

Al does get permission from the original writers of the songs that he parodies. While the law supports his ability to parody without permission, he feels it's important to maintain the relationships that he's built with artists and writers over the years. Plus, Al wants to make sure that he gets his songwriter credit (as writer of new lyrics) as well as his rightful share of the royalties.

In regards to the thread topic, look here:

http://www.blogs.oregonli...tem=214112

Dorr says a rep from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers paid an unannounced visit to his restaurant one night and heard covers of the songs performed by local band "Black Notes."

Because his place features local musicians and covers are rare, he didn't think he had to pay the musicians and publishers group an estimated $2,000 to cover performances of copyrighted tunes.

But the owners of the songs, including Wonder and Hendrix's estate, say he does.

Now they're suing Dorr for copyright infringement - and they're seeking payment of between $750 and $30,000 for each song, along with attorney fees.

Sinéad owes Prince ZILCH. He got paid (and still gets paid whenever her version is played or included on an album), and afaik she stopped performing the song after Prince roughed her up.

If it wasn't for Sinéad, most Prince fans wouldn't know about NC2U, since it was a forgotten album track on a protégé album that was (and is) almost impossible to find.

wasn't it a lawsuit against SNL that lead to this? that is SNL got sued for parodies and won so it not assumed to be protected?

a while back SNL (Saturday night live) got sued over parodies... SNL won, thus showing that doing a parody was legal and did not need permission.(i assume it got to some appeals court as that is the only was a court's ruling becomes law)

There is not one single reference to this song or this story anywhere on Google that I could find so I guess you are the only person in the world to know this. Show me some proof.

Let me use my google powers and see if you're telling the truth:

Whaddayaknow, I do get a result:

And to top it all off:
http://web.archive.org/we...?page=news

Tuesday, March 20th 2000.....PM Dawn has released to The Infinite Dedication a previously unreleased track which can be freely distributed to the public. Titled "If She Loves Me," this song samples "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynrd Skynrd. PM Dawn wasn't allowed to sell this song because Lynrd Skynrd wouldn't allow the use of the sample by a black artist. Its a sad world.....but here's the track! If She Loves Me This song is to be freely distributed, and PM Dawn and the makers of this site will never make any profits from this song.
