On the MC boards it was asked --do u want a musicology type album or a TRc type album? most people wanted the former

My point is he DOESNT release the great stuff.

He didn't put out 3121 because it's what fans expected, he put it out because it was a safe album with the highest chance of selling. He was trying to keep the momentum of the Musicology "comeback".

He doesn't do EXACTLY what he wants to do. If he did, we'd most likely get more TRC-style stuff. That stuff doesn't sell very well, so no matter how risky or artistic Prince is he'll always fall back on the bottom line eventually. And that's money.

As for the "something new" debate - nobody does anything new this far into the game without sacrificing the very thing that defines them. Paul McCartney's stuff lately sounds absolutely amazing but definitely NOT NEW.


Oh,yes,this is how I feel about Elton John.

But we're taling about Prince.

I understand the concept that record sales lead = Prince's continuing career. But damn it, and I think only the biggest fans here are like this, I love him best when he's experimenting (ala TRC, ATWIAD, etc.)

But he can't do that without record sales and income! What would YOU do?

I would call them/us independent thinkers.
I would call them fakes and spoofs.

Mick, that's not the point of the commercial. He's not scoffing at the old songs (or ideas), after all he ends up walking onto the stage to the strains of the old standby Let's Go Crazy.

The point it that he's scoffing at the theatrics that they are suggesting; the car, the doves, the space suit, etc. The point is that he's just going to perform music, not put on a circus.

lol but as your questionis valid, I must agree that Prince seems to be coasting a bit lately. Even TRC is weird (and I like it a lot), but not really new.

He seems at ease with where he is, and to some extent it's working. he's entered the living-legend phase of his career, where he just has to be Prince. And who Prince is has been defined now. The 80's seemed like a difficult time. Growth is rewarding, but hard.

He seems happier now, and most people would choose happiness over innovation (despite what they may say).

The man is a marketing genius! Everything he does, his looks, his shows, this site, are the markings of a man gifted with a keen ability to ovserve what is lacking in the business he has chosen as his profession, and he excels at it. To me that commercial was meant to reestablish himself with the general populace, give them something nostalgic they could connect to, but not deviate so much that they don't feel like they know him anymore. That commercial was the hook, and his performance at the Super Bowl will be a masterpiece, a work of art, some thirty years in the making.

Today I realized that while the artist, Prince, is artistically and musically brilliant, the person we see in the media as "Prince" is a brand, or a product, and a business. His longevity, level of respect, and success are undisputed, often unrivaled in his field, and attributed ultimately to the man who makes the music. Prince Rogers Nelson.

Tell me he's unable to produce a new thought? His own style, his stamp on all of our lives is a new thought, unlike any before him. Maybe others had potential, or passion, or great ideas to promote themselves, but name another artist that has been able to pull all of these elements together for as long as Prince has and is still playing the game, and at the top of it. (Madonna doesn't count. She's not a musician like Prince is. She may be on her way, but that's just come about recently.)

....a major reason eye pitched ideas 2 the man n my youthful enthusiasm was Bcuz it was said he had the 'last word' on what was & wasn't done on his projects...of course that still fell within the realm of the stipulations given if there was a 'sponsorship' agreement of some kind (i.e.:UTCM~date contest on MTV) the marketing has always been bold & innovative!!! yet the closer ya get 2 how he does things~it is seldom n alignment with public conjecture on how it was accomplished.....there is an orger eye consider a friend that shared what Bcame a promotional suggestion on 3121 that was utilized big time=this orger did not benefit nor included/invited when the idea got implimented (& spoke of at length on this site) seeing a myriad of events like that thru the years just renders unpleasant energy....

...industry folk n casual converation back n the summer spoke of the 'short run' of 3121 & that it was basically 'dead' 2 them about 6 wks after release: their view seemed 2 B that at this point he 'just don't give a F*#@' & wants 2 make some bank 2 pay 'personal' expenses....4 B there is little on 3121 that seems 2 create a lasting impression~much of it is 'old conversation' 2 B (1 cut sounds way 2 close 2 an artist who's work B shared with P years ago that was the subject of a 'chat' last year) which is where my "can U teach me something that is new" attitude comes from wink
