Don't you think that since prince converted to a Jehovia Witness that his music has gone down hill ever since? What happened to the funky stuff that prince used to put out? Please Prince loose your Religion. Go back to your roots. Have you lost your inspiration? Get rid of this pop stuff. Don't turn your back on the fans that have been there since day one.

IMHO I tend to agree slightly with what your saying but It might not be religion thats had an effect on his music - it could be lots of things for example his age, he may feel he has no need to sing or perform the way he used to - he still gives me a huge buzz to watch and listen to - but I prefer his earlier more rawer side that he used to have - hell - I loved it when he cursed and danced around half naked - thats what made me fall in love with him but maybe its just not what he feels like doing anymore - but theres always hope he'll go back to the way he was - one day... wink but until then - I will take whatever he gives us - I love him for being on this earth dishing out the wonderful music like no other lol

His Religion isn't ruined his music, but the lack of spirituality, that prince is well known for, the lack being his religion, IS ruining his music. nod
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

said it elsewhere... sayin' it again... Prince and Religion have always been mixed up together. Mostly, in my opinion, it's been a positive thang because Prince never proscribed a religion, never endorsed a religion. He merely expressed his love of Jesus and wished that others would climb on board. Lovesexy was the zenith of Prince's secularity, as he both wished us to become one with the 'god' he was feeling at the time, but acknowledged that 'god' was inside all of us and 'just wanted to come out to play'. Since then Prince has become more hardcore in his beliefs, to the extent that Graffiti Bridge was ruined and, now, he's altered his belief structure to include Jehovah.

I believe his 'religion' has ruined his music, but then I believe Prince does not actually 'know' what his religion is.

Okay, I have read through all the opinions of this topic, and of course I have one too. My theory is to each his own. Back in the day if it was in his head it was out his mouth so to speak, and that was fine ! I personally don't think it's his "religion" that has changed things., I think the man has just stepped back and taken a good long, hard look at his life and it's purpose., and just maybe he feels that there is something else~ the afterworld ( heaven & hell). Prince has always, always, always mentioned God, heaven or something to that nature since the very beginning, so he has always "known" there is more beyond this world, and I believe that too. I personally love the old stuff immensley, but the new is great as well. Now that is not to say that I think all of his old music is the bomb or all of his new music is the bomb. At some point in time a persons maturity takes over and they develop a new repect and opinion on life. You have to consider this man is what almost 50, I believe in my heart no matter what religion he has chosen to follow, he knows that his has been given a gift from God and maybe he feels like giving props to the man upstairs who has given him so much down here. We are all going to die someday, and it does matter what you have done down here. ( this isn't intended to upset anyone) I believe in God, I believe in Heaven and I believe that eventually there will be the day when we will be held accountable for everything we say, do, speak, etc,,etc... Not everyone shares the same beliefs or religions or ideas, but that is why we are who we are. If we were all the same what fun would that be? I say let the man live and chose his own destiny, as we all are doing..maybe without even realizing what we are doing. Bless all of you !!! biggrin pray pray

Prince would be better off NOT doing certain songs rather the re-doing the lyrics. Because Gett Off" is still going to have the same meaning no matter what.

I'm glad that some of you had some intelligent imput on the question I asked. But I'm really that 290 people have viewed this topic and only a few left a response. I religion too hot of a topic for people to touch??? Their is nothing wrong with voicing your own opinion. It's very healthy to do so. It is the American Way. Now lets here some more opinions. Everyone has one. I think religion is great for some people. without religion there would probably be even more caos in the world. Even though people already kill one another for praying to a different god. How dumb and anti-god is that. Killing someone because they pray to Allah, budda, or whoever their god is. God is God. every religion has their own name for their own god. Religion is fine if it works for you. But don't put it in everybody's face. And don't let your religion close your mind or control you. Keep your religious views to yourself. Just being spiritual is just fine by me. now lets her from more of the prince fans out there.

Everything you say is right, however your initial post sounded more like selfish reasons on you're part. Wanting a man to give up something that is important to his own life, so that you can get your dance on/funk on again. That's a little different. Listening to his interviews from 20 years ago and now, you can tell he is in a different place spiritually and the music is going to reflect that. You're either going to like it or don't.

Me personally I became more of a Prince fan when he cleaned up his lyrics. I wasnt a fan of all that "erotic" stuff he did in the Past.
I find it disturbing that people still want the type of music he did 20 years ago.
Im so happy that Prince has toned downed his lyrically content, I have a lot of respect and admiration for him now.

Prince's music has always had religious overtones so I don't really see how his foray into JWism could be blamed for "ruining" the *music*. For You & Prince aren't what I'd consider "funky" albums and they were way pre-JW. Conversly, a 'funky' song like Controversy includes The Lord's Prayer and Prince himself referred to The Black Album as the funk Bible. So if you want no religious references in Prince's music, you'll have to get rid of a lot of songs.

Obviously Prince's devotion to organized religion (specifically JW) has led to him changing certain lyrics; but I don't think it's fair to say it's only his religion that is leading to create different music. In fact, he's still singing about the same subjects: love, sex, spirituality; it's just that he's less brash/obvious about the sex part. For example, he doesn't say, "I sincerely wanna fuck the taste out of your mouth," he says, "Imagine me on the tip of your tongue" instead.

I definitely agree with Kisscamille, it's annoying when he changes the lyrics to stupid shit like "we don't give a duck". Third graders don't even talk like that...but I don't necessarily want to hear a 48 year old man singing "Morning noon and night I give you head" either...

I am agnostic (& very anti-organized religion) but the spirituality aspect of his music doesn't bother me as long as it's not too preachy (e.g. religious). For example, I love the Lovesexy album (spirituality), but hate the version of Anna Stesia from ONA...Live when he's starts asking "How many of y'all believe in God? How many of U worship God?" (religion). I like The Cross (spirituality), but hate The Christ (religion). But regardless what the lyrics are, the music is the same underneath it. A funky song is a funky song, it's not the lyrics that make it funky.

Agreed.Maybe he should just do the "clean" songs in concert.I hate the idea of changing song lyrics.I'd rather not hear the song at all,if it has to "altered" in any way.

Funky? What the hell does funky mean? Funky don't mean squat if there is no genius or audacity or fire. That's what I want, not another wack funk number. Prince can do that in his sleep. He won't beat the hip hoppers on pure backbeat sass, so why does he even try.
