Good observation! I love stuff like that--I'm always paying more attention to what's in the background than the fore & middle grounds... Look how his hands are positioned...it seems to be a nice camera with a manual focus lens. It's almost more of a self portrait of him--he is directly in the sight line of the viewer (lens), I'm sure he knew his reflection was in the mirror. It reminds me of the Arnolfini Marriage painting by van Eyck where van Eyck is in the reflection of the mirror hanging on the back wall.


Or Velazquez' Las Meninas where the parents(?) are in the mirror reflection.



There is something odd about the whole thing though--the way the twins posed (the seated one is one leg cross away from a crotch shot) and Tamar (or Mani for that matter) is nowhere in sight...
