I was checking out various online CD stores and looking if they had 3121 on preorder.... then I found this info:

Prince's first album in two years, following the chart topping album "Musicology." Includes Japan-only bonus track.
Bonus Track: 1 Japan edition bonus track (expected) omfg

you know how stingy prince is with bonus tracks these days...it'll probably be something we can download from npgmc, if not one of the musicology "virtual b-sides".

you know what? i don't know if i like the Prince that subtetly embraces the music industry. i like it when he does things his own way. the days of the 80s music machine is kind old to me now.

Well, we might have more chances that he comes to our city, if there's more people liking his new music ...

I would love it if he'd come to Montreal again ... Where Rhonda is from btw.

I hope that if this "bonus track" is a new song, that it will be available without having to buy an expensive import from Japan.

There was a list like this "leaked" before Rave came out and basically none of it happened. I would imagine that how much of this happens depends upon sales success of the album.

though saying that he did loads of promotional TV appearances for Rave , in the USA and in Europe , and the album still bombed , so its hard to say whether the amount of promotion and the success of the album will be related.

i am not trying p1ss on anyone's chips, but sales notes are to be taken with a pinch of salt. i work at a record company and these things are basically cut n paste jobs. you just change the artist and project name. they usually come on several flavours;

International Superstar campaign

Domestic Priority Campaign

Mid level MOR / Urban / Rock / enter genre here Breakthrough Campaign.

i'm sure some of it will happen, but don't take it as fact. and that's without factoring in Prince's flakyness.

-----
I am not sure why every is so skepitcal. Sony did a good job promoting the last project and I am sure Universal will do a good job with this. P's days of selling 10 million copies are over but if he can sell a few million and put out an enjoyable CD it's great.

like i said, ain't p1ssing on your chips. i was offering a bit on real insight into what sales notes actually mean. It was to offer some caution so this site isn't bombarded with threads complaining; "whhaaaaa i just watched TRL / Oprah / Letterman / ETC, why is prince not on AS PROMISED... i hate Universal they sux, zzzzz etc, etc.

not being negative, just contributing to the thread. that's what a message board is for, isn't it?

not quite, it was that type of shoving down the throat to a musical audience with expendable income and into that type of music. shove Prince down the throat of 10-15 year old girls and he doesn't get anywhere near those sales. heck, shove Prince down 30 somethings throat and he doesn't get those sales because that market is more fickle and doesn't buy as much music as teenagers.

All this "throat-shoving" is making me uncomfortable. neutral

That´s why I am happy to see that Universal seems to have a nice marketing plan. His music should be exposed. But I still believe they will try to market Prince for the same audience of Sade and Sting, not Britney and Linkin Park. Prince tried to reach this audience on Rave, and we know what happened...

damn 93 huh? I bet SOTT blew you away when you first heard it.

- Not really...I admit it took me lots of time to be used to Prince´s 80s sound...I remember I bought The Hits and while I was listening to it on the record store, I felt very uncomfortable and embarassed with most of them (specially the falsetto songs). But ended up buying it because I already liked When Doves Cry and Raspberry Beret. The other songs grew on me with time, and I even sold The Hits to buy the Hits/B-sides Cd-set.

Now I love SOTT and most 80s albums. If I had to choose an album to represent the essence of Prince, it would be SOTT (even the cover art is a timeless masterpiece). But I still love the Gold Experience and the 95 NPG. They have a big place in my heart.

Universal can "wish" this all they want. This is more promotion he has ever done for an album. At least in a very long time. This is something a fan would "wish" for. And if Prince actually complys, we'll have a good year. But he may not...which is more likely.

Look, it sounds as thought my quotes are being taken as statements that are absolute and encompass the mass majority. No, that would be a mistake on your part to read it like that.

I'm not trying to argue with you, but if that is what it reads like it isn't the readers fault, it is your responsibility to be clearer in your positions. the mistake was on your part, not ours.

1nonly said:

With this new label proposing many avenues of "distribution" or "shoving stuff down people's throat" whatever, it makes the 3121 more consumer friendly by making it more in your face. Ifyou see it advertised through all kinds of venues, you will at least give it a listen to or wonder about it at the very least.

creating more awareness does not make it more user friendly. the music itself is what will make it user friendly or accessible, that is seperate from the advertisement that creates awareness that drives consumers to sample it to see if it is user friendly--hence something the user would like to use or purchase.

Then there's the class that prince is in. He's established, there's no need to establish him with a young group. He music, however, needs to be exposed to teenager. Most teenagers and younger groups will not seek out acts like Prince, it just seems like too much work. Again, I said, MOST and NOT ALL.

most teenagers aren't going to beinto a mid 40's musician at all, they are into musical acts more their age that appeal to their tastes. teenagers aren't simply into good music, they are into music that is geared towards them, which Prince is not. no amount of advertising is going to make Prince appeal to teenagers. what you hope to do is simply appeal to the entire music community and remind people who may have listended to Prince in the 80's that he is still around today and still as good.
this message brought to you by logic.

I have to disagree with you post "dumbass", althou I understand what your saying here, but as someone who is into radio and have always payed very close attention to demographics for years. Because its apart of my job...I have to say, Prince can still appeal to the younger generation.

Now in Urban Music alot of younger teenagers are into Charlie Wilson & Ronald Isley, there two dudes are well over 55 years of age.

Prince will have more appeal to a younger crowd than these two artists mentioned above, because he's also a rocker!
There are so many young girls between 12 & 20 who buy Ron Isley and Charlie Wilson records...not to mention requesting their songs on the radio and at clubs. This is for the Urban demographic.

Now...it may be harder for Prince, because Pop Music Stations don't support artists who are well established and have been in the business for as long as he has. Unless its U2 and their starting to fade them out now!

But I can guarrantee with proper promotion alot of these girl and boys will take notice and like what they hear and think its cool and then they'll buy the product.

Prince still had a great effect on mainstream media and music (overall).
I have worked in all kinds of formats and I sat in a room at the radio station one night with a dozen cheerleaders waiting to be on the air and we talked about music and Prince's Musicology Tour came up!
Someone mentioned it and over half of those girls said they liked Prince, and started singing his songs: 1999, little red corvette, rasberry beret, when doves cry, gett off, and they even said how much they liked musicology the song and video and thought it was cool to see him on mtv and there was even a girl who was so excited and said she thought he was the sexiest man alive!

These were suburbian girls who probably only listen to justin timberlake and britney spears, but still the fact is they heard of prince, they knew some of his music and they thought he rocked on the grammys and on tour.

So if he is promoted right and given the props he deserves to shine brightly with this album, he will gain some new fans who are young and older and those who love all kinds of music and don't care who its by...but only because its cool and popular.

Prince will always get the respect, music is changing and so is the industry.
Prince will forever have people's respect. He will have a hit record this time again.

Musicology was just the tip of the ice berg, but I can smell it...Prince will reclaim the top spot on the charts and get some massive play.

Because "Black Sweat" is just what the doctor ordered!
