Prince Didn't Like The Ending Of Purple Rain

I read in a Prince book tittled "Prince" published in 1985. Stating that Prince didn't like how the movie Purple Rain ended, I guess the whole performance scene, then the movie just end just like that after the song "Baby Im A Star". I had wished the movie had went on a little further too, than just a cliff, U know what I mean? Well, the book said that Prince didn't like how the movie ended. What do ya'll think about that.

Later, Peace.

I know all about that, the orginal script n' everything. 2 tell the truth Prince shoulda did something else with the existing ending.

if you know all about it then why did you bother starting a thread and asking?

In the orginally script named Dreams, it was about a character whose parents are dead and who plays in a rock band. At Prince's request, the Scriptwriter William Blinn changed the tittle to Purple Rain. Later another writer rewrote the script 2 the way it is now.

Well, I never particularly liked the end of Purple Rain. He sings the fantastic song Purple Rain which is to show he has reached some sort of emotional maturity, found some respect for his fellow band-mates, and overcome his family's legacy of screwing up, then he goes back and sings two lame-ass, vacuous, self-obsessed (albeit funky) songs that are really a step backwards (within the context of the movie) and ends it all by the terribly immature joke of fake orgasming over the audience. Yuck. The album sounds far better ending with Purple Rain, and if they could somehow have worked Purple Rain as the ending, I think it would have been better.

Wasn't there supposed to be a nude "sword-fight" to the death between the Kid and Morris in the original ending? I think I read that online...

In the Director's Commentary on the 20th anniversary DVD of Purple Rain, it was said that Prince wanted everybody to die.

I liked the ending fine. If it had ended with PR I think it would have been a little sad. PR is a great song, but I'd rather hum "Baby I'm a Star."

I hate to say it but I will. Prince was not given his way on purple Rain and had to listen and compromise with the directors etc. Purple Rain turned out to be pretty good. Prince was given total control for Under The Cherry Moon and Graffiti Bridge. Get my point?

Hah... if it had ended with Purple Rain and some examples of his newfound maturity, it would not have been the smash it was. Prince needed to retain a bit of rebeliousness and, yes, immaturity... given the audience it aimed at (kids and young adults). The ending needed to be upbeat, with plenty of the "bad" Prince.

I can't imagine why anyone would think an ending comprised of a man simulating masturbation on a three-foot long phallic symbol that gushes white fluid at the moment of truth is anything short of perfection.

It would have been that much better if there was a shot of Apollonia getting sprayed in the face by said white fluid, but that is about it.

To me, it's not a step backwards to sing "Baby I'm a Star" and jackin' all over the audience. To grow doesn't mean you have to lose the person you are.

Well, within the context of the movie, Prince wasn't drawing in the crowds because he had a tendency to sing self-obsessed songs about his own take on life and relations that the crowd didn't understand - The Beautiful Ones, Computer Blue, Darling Nikki (in reality of course, these are fantastic songs that we fully appreciate). Purple Rain was like a redemption song. Then he goes back to singing self-obsessed me me me songs - basically he goes back to being a cocky, arrogant brat. That's what I mean by a step backwards. It's like the maturity found in Purple Rain is lost again.

That's one thing I always found HILARIOUS about Purple Rain...he's not drawing them in because the songs are too self absorbed and no one understands them...but, in reality, the songs are wonderful.

I don't agree with the maturity getting lost though. He grew but didn't become "perfect". To me that's very human and I like that about the ending.

They deleted a lot of good scenes in the movie. I seen some pictures of the deleted scenes. They shoulda kept them in the movie, it was good. 1 of the scenes, Prince went 2 the warehouse where Apples was rehearsing with her group, he didn't want her 2 B in, and tried 2 get her 2 come with him, but was physically thrown out by Morris Day's people. Another seen running out of the warehouse.

How could PRINCE POSSIBLY THINK THAT ALL THE SEX AND VIOLENCE he WROTE in THE DRAFT COULD BE RELEASED? How could a Man who had SUCH WILD IDEAS BACK THEN and DESIRES, Or Even Back in the 1990's be a JEHOVAH'S WHITNESS TODAY? The Man WAS a VIRTUAL PIMP....What happened to VIOLET THE ORGAN GRINDER?
