Funny how this many people dis it now. When it came out, there was nothing but praise for it.

Exactly. I was one of those ppl too.

I remember when you started that thread where you said Musicology was boring as hell, and I just didn't see where you were coming from.

I still enjoy a few songs on it enough to see it as average, but it really is mostly boring.

It was the Hits tour that made ppl look at Musicology more fondly.

I disagree. There were plenty of people expressing dislike for Musicology last year. If I remember correctly, it had it's share of detractors before it was even released. Every time a positive review was posted, those who didn't like the record posted their honest and contrasting opinions. I don't even need to bring up the Billboard chart threads (bitch-fest '04!).
Some folks' minds may have indeed changed since then, but I wouldn't generalize
and say "everybody was diggin' it because they were caught up in the hype and now they hate it."
We gotta keeop in mind that this works both ways.
I can't keep count of how many people have changed their minds from the negative to the positive regarding albums like Come or The Gold Experience.

I would say 95% of everyone on this site loved it. I'm basing that on what I read in the official review thread when it came out. I believe it was described as "exhilarating". I was one of the very few on that thread who gave it a bad rating.

Yep, the average response to Musicology in that questionnaire sticky was "I was really pleased."

It makes me wonder how people could like it so much back then, and dislike it now. I mean, is it just a rush of excitement that comes when Prince releases a new album? Or maybe people thought Prince would read their reviews or something?

It's very strange.

I feel that at least this album is listenable. I have been a P fan for more than half my life and I have to say, this is the most listenable album I've heard in a while. Yes, I liked Rainbow, but I still can't sit through Come or Rave albums. So, do I think Musicology is great? No. But at least I can sit through the whole damn thing without getting a headache. And Call My Name still makes me say "Aww, how cute he is!"

I'll give you my personal experience. It was a combination of the adrenaline rush of seeing Prince sell out arenas again and me really wanting his first mainstream album attempt since Rave to be good.

How do you know that the same people who like the album at first are dissin' it now? How can one come to that kind of conclusion? Was there a new poll that I missed?

I hated Call My Name at first, thought Mr. Man & Reflection were plain boring, & Musicology was a retread. All those have grown on me.

The only one I like less is ICP&C. That song is all about the story, which doesn't grow on you (though it is pretty funky).

Musicology's best feature is that it's short. Not an insult, most albums are too long these days.

Certainly not nearly his best, but it did grow on me.

Hate to dispute EWM, but...

Are you sure you just don't want to hurt someone just because? wink

There will never be another 1999, Controversy, Sign, or any of those great albums, and I had come to accept that I may never hear another P song that just got stuck in my head like the good ol' days, but low and behold, Musicology changed that. I sort of feel like P felt he needed to finally make an album that people would buy, maybe needed money (hate to say that - I know he's rich, but still....) and I have to say that after so many years of defending how great he is, Musicology finally backed that up to a lot of my friends. So, overall, I'm happy he made the album.

Most people had no choice but to buy it. It was included with the ticket sale.

Yes, but just because you get a free cd doesn't mean you are going to listen to it. I get lots of free cd's and they are crap. What I am saying is that the "general public" not just P fans, can listen to this cd and the ones I have talked to like it. In the past, I couldn't even get my friends to make it 1/2 way through one of his cd's. The title track and video got non-fans interested enough and excited enough to buy a concert ticket, and that hasn't happened in a while.

Meanwhile, Musicology was a very forgetable album. I bet if you go out on the street right now, hardly anyone will remember it. I don't know anyone (outside of here) who actually went out and bought the album. All people really cared about was the tour which was full of hits.

A bit of both, maybe. A lot of fans are ready to cream themselves when any news of the Purple One is released, let alone a new album. Not to mention that a lot of Orgers suspect P.'s been lurking here...

Yes.

I am more forgiving of Musicology now than when I first heard it.

I listen to "on the couch" all the time, actually.

And every now and then "Reflection."

About three weeks ago I listened to the whole thing straight through without drinking. But I don't do that often.
