Bow down, bitches. whip

The title track alone is worth the price of admission. It's hot sexy funk on a platter. It's like three grooves in one. This song is a stunning example of Prince the genius producer. The way the many tracks are layered, peeled off like sweaty clothing, and perfectly tossed back on.... drool The music itself builds to a panty-soaking climax. When he sings, "Ohhhh, ohhhhh, ohhhhh, ohhhhh, yeah! Babe, did you come, come, come come? I wanna know..." y'all bitches know you're like "Hell yeah, Prince baby, you know I did!" Seriously, listen to the whole song, giving it your full sensory attention, and you'll notice that when he gets to this line you literally feel a postorgasmic afterglow.

No more, no more, will you cry, cry, cry, cry... touched

Definitely not me.... it seems like an obligitional release to get away from WB as quick as possible

I must admit there is a coherent atmosphere on this record, dark, regretfull, bitter....but when it comes to the individual songs this is one of Princes weakest record (a bit better then New Power Soul and The Vault in my opinion, because of a few good tracks).

A track to track summit:
- Come: Nice, decent funk with good horn arrangements, but those sucking sounds are toecurling and annoying, and the song goes on way, way too long. Prince played a live-version of this song around the release of the Gold Experience that was way better
- Space: one of the worst Prince album cuts, uninspired filler.
- Pheromone: somewhat better then Space, but still very mediocre, Prince has put out dozens of b-sides that were way better then this cut
- Loose: Prince doing techno? Not THAT bad..but this isnt his kind of music, sounds like a parody on technomusic instead of a good example of a technosong.
- Papa: Dark, little cut, on of the better tracks, the lyrics sound heartfelt and musically it owes a lot to the sound he used on Sign of the Times, but the "positive" (not to say 'happy') ending of the song, sounds to laborated, and undermines the chilling impact of the song untill that point (maybe, he should have let this song 'just' fade out)
- Race: mediocre funktrack, Prince must have tens of hundreds of cuts like this in his 'vault', one positive point: the interaction between Prince's and Rosie Gaines' voices.
- Dark: Yes, a good, traditional sounding R&B-ballad, maybe one of his best ballads released during the nineties. Simple but effective arrangement, and a nice bridge. Good song.
- Solo: Just a vocal excersise, not a song, i think i listened two or three times to this, thats all there is to say
- Letitgo: sounding a bit stiff and dated productionwise maybe, but together with Papa and Dark the third 'good' song on this record. Honest lyrics, a catchy reffrain, nothing spectecular, but enjoyable.
- Orgasm: Just a little experiment, not a song, i think i listened two or three times to this.....

To conclude my 'review': 3 good tracks and a lot of filler, i sometimes listen to one of these three songs, but defintely not the kind of cd i play from beginning to end.... My rating: 5 / 10, or 2 out of 5 stars.....

I couldn't disagree more. The sucking and licking sounds are hot, horny and I've played this track on repeat many times. It's supposed to be long. It's one of those Prince songs that works you out like a marathon sex session, one of those that leaves your mouth dry, your cheeks red, and your hair all kinds of fucked up.

This has been discussed here before, and there are some who would agree with you here. As you probably guessed, I'm not one of them. I think the whole point of the coda is also the point of him doing the song in the first place.

Prince didn't want to just put out a song about child abuse and end it with "Don't abuse children, or else they turn out like me." Instead, he uses it to deliver another message. First he gets under your skin with a chilling tale of an abusive childhood (his or not, doesn't matter) and then wakes you up with a Sly-Stone-esque coda that proclaims, "Deep down, we're all the same; every single one of us knows some kind of pain...but if you love somebody, your life won't be in vain." In other words, here's a story of a painful past. We all have them. So we can choose to stay isolated in our own pain, or we can reach out to each other and love each other despite our wounds. If we can do this, there will "always be a rainbow at the end of every rain." rainbo

Funk Mistress,

Inderstand your point about Papa, Prince on purpose did put positive lines at the end of this song... but somehow it doesnt 'work' for me, it sounds to me like Prince sings: see what i have been trough? at that moment he's indeed touching my soul with his words....but by puting that ending to the song (thats in a different style of music also), he unintenionally undermines the message of the song and the impact it has on people, i think. To use a kind of comparison wich is maybe not totally appropriate, but hopefully makes my point clear: its like watching the movie American Beauty, and directly after the end scene the credits are cut off and some shiney, happy commercial breaks in, not giving you time and possibility to think about, resonate about what you just experienced...

I know, childabuse can be very painfull, and i think everyone in here agrees with that, but to deal with those feelings its sometimes necessary to confront yourselve with that, think about it.....by suddenly bringing in some 'positive', opposite sounding element in this song, i think Prince killed the impact of the song... the fact that you have sometimes have to resonate to understand things better, and deal with it

This is a favorite of mine of prince's and anyone else's.
It along with the gold experience gave me an appreciation of
prince's music altogether. It's one I can put on anytime and
feel it's relevance today just as the past and now it's over 10
years old. I will always feel this entire work.

If my memory serves me correct, one of our dear orgers in the past insisted this song was about Michael Jackson's father.

Wasn't me. what nonsense! lol

love this album, some darkish material on it. i liked that era. True breath of fresh air after the D&P/Symbol/Tony M fiasco years.

At first I really didn't care for this CD. However, I sat down and listened without skipping and it has really grown on me. Much better than a more recent Prince purchase of mine, Emancipation. But then again, I have only listened to disks 1-2. razz
