I bet if Prince started out a show by screaming "Get on the dance floor, muthafuckas!," the crowd would go nuts, and in a good way.

Who the hell wants a G-rated Prince?

I'd rather hear him say "Dance pecker heads!"

"c'mon, you peckerheads, sing it!"

best. on stage outburst. ev-errrrr.

confuse I don't get what's supposed to be so funny about that. "Motherfucker" has an "er" on the end of it, and you're supposed to pronounce it.

if you pay attention to how he pronounces it, you'll get it.

Yeah, I agree. You can still have religion, and still do what you have/want to do, and it's all ok.

he said "fuck" on the 1999 album, and cussed a lot in the movie "purple rain", and he cussed tons live in the 80's... and said fuck a whole lot on "erotic city"...hmmm what cuss words has prince never used?

I was never a fan of his excessive cursing like in Days of Wild, but few strong words here and there were fine.

You know what's funny? Prince didn't even curse that much on his 80s records...it wasn't until the nineties that he seemed to excessively curse. Very good point, EWM..

I think that he has passed the stage of cursing. Even if he didn't turn into a JW I believe he would have still passed that stage. Cursing is old to him now he did it when no one else did and he got a rise out of people. Now that every other song has profanity in it its like second nature. He is all about controversy but he is always reinventing himself and his music. He doesnt really need to curse anymore to make an impact in his lyrics.

I don't really mind if he stops putting curses in his songs, as he has. But I can't stand when he censors his old songs.

nod Don't get me wrong, I am glad P is happy and spritually enlighten and all. But for some strange reason, you can help and but miss that wild spirited, uncensored, horny razz , cussing motherfucker that we used to now as Prince not the waterdown version we're getting now. angel

I wish Prince was still very open minded and realized that he shouldn't limit himself in word or expression.

The JW convictions and their obtuse dualistic view of the world are not so groovy.

Sometimes "spicy" words more acurately convey an idea, other times it is simply part of everyday language.

(With that said, however, I haven't had to use spicy words for years. Unless I'm singing along to SexyMF or something) wink

I think that, as long as he's not replacing fuck with duck and such, I want him to continue his current no cursing stance. It usually forces one to be more creative with the english language. There are occasions though where a curse is more than appropriate, but those misses will be worth all the creative hits.

not cursing is fine. as a whole, not much of the music i listen to has curses in it. i didn't plan that or anything, it just works out that way. if p doesn't want to curse on his records - if he can express himself without using swears - great! i just hope he abstains from the implied curses as well. i mean, what's the point of not saying "fuck" if, in its place, you'll say "duck". it may not be a curse but we all know what you want to say. seems kinda silly to me. not too mention how silly it SOUNDS!

I agree; that does seem silly. However, using "curse" words like DOGGONE and DARN and BLOODY will work.

I get the sense that P is not being true to himself. Sort of like he is not allowing himself to be who he really is. I mean, how could he go from a man who sang about giving head, a girl named nikki, pussy control, etc to singing about, although great songs, not what we are used to hearing. He will always have that devious, dark and preverse side to him. I know it must be difficult for him to control it. I miss the old stuff and am concered about seeing him in concert because I know the Prince I will get will not be Prince prior to Jehovah. Maybe he will release "new" material but claim that it was written/performed prior to his conversion?

in all actuality, he's still himself. in all the stuff you just mentioned--the various changes of face--he's still there and is still being true to himself. if you've been a fan for a while i'd think you'd catch on about how chameleonic of a personality he's got, so this shouldn't surprise you in the least.

Yeah that is true he is a chameleon, but you don't have the feeling that he is repressing his true feelings?

not at all. he's 46 years old now...he should be a helluva lot more sure of who he truly is now than he probably did when he was still in his 20s. nod

This is my first response on Prince.org, though I've been a regular reader of these threads for some time now. I grew up in the 80s and got into Prince like most at that time...through Purple Rain. But since then, I was hooked, having bought all previous and subsequent albums, singles and extended versions. I definitely don't claim to be the most knowledgeable, but I do consider myself an unwavering fan of Prince's music. And I will admit this: You'll never see me bashing a Prince album or song (there are songs and albums that I like more than others, of course, and that's how I rate them, by comparison), but at the same time I don't believe Prince is infallable. Okay, I just felt the need to get that out there so everyone knows what type of fan I am.

If Prince felt the need to (and thus chose to) swear in his songs, I wouldn't mind one bit. Nor would I feel that he has contradicted his lifestyle. For years Prince has been evolving into something different than what he was before, whether it be the way he dresses to what he names himself to what he will or won't say in his songs. Frankly, I don't expect today's Prince to be the Prince we'll see five or ten years from now...but I'm getting away from the point of this thread so let me get back on track...

When Prince did swear (and let's realize that most of his cuss-filled songs that were officially released came about in the 90s) it didn't actually make him a better song writer; it just simply made him more unpredictable. We never knew what he would say or just how cool it would sound. I play "Face Down" just so I can hear the lyric: "4 all those who know the number and don't call...fuck all y'all." I never felt that swearing hurt his genius or enhanced it...it just provided more avenues for him to travel in order to express himself. If he decided to bring back the blue language to his songs, he'd still be a different Prince than he was when he sang "Sexy MF"

Of course!! I miss when Prince use to not give a damn and would throw in a couple of muthaf*ckas into the songs. Everyone is entitled to a cuss word once in a while. What does prince do when he stumps his toe?? I wonder if he yells DUCK!!! or HIT!!(or OHHHHWAHH)..But seriously i understand that Prince is older and all that. But Prince knows that he fights the urge to turn back into the symbol and say "Hey, Ya'll Billy Jack Bitches need to cut that shit out before i come over there and bitch slap yo asses , u juvenile delinquents, betta sit yo asses down" when he's mad. I wonder if he cusses in private??

I'm not talking about performing old classics live in concert again. The "real" version of Housequake is a prime example of a song with swear words that I'd love to hear again. Not that funky instrumental he inserts from time to time. That's cool but not the same as the "real" deal to me.

I'm talking about new music. For me, I don't feel that Prince needs to cuss. The spiritual/philosophical Prince is just as interesting as the sexual rebel Prince. Don't get me wrong,I'm not encouraging lyrics like "we don't give a duck". To me that's just silly but,it's his song, not mine.

I've notice that quite a few people here would break out in tears of joy if Prince stepped to the stage, said "Oww-ah","fuck" and "good night" and went home. He'd get a 10 minute standing ovation from some of ya'll.Hey,if that's what makes you happy, that's what makes you happy.

How important is Prince's use of foul language to you?

no, once you've crossed over (4 those who understand) you don't turn back

The English language (yes there is an English language before Bill Gates persuaded the World that "US American" is the norm), is so complete that there is no need to use profane language to express whatever you want to say. What ever happened to good education and the desire to express yourself in a fashion that did not offend (anyone)?
