Couldn't care less if he doesn't write songs with cursing in again - I however still hate it when he changes the lyrics on his old material. Personally it makes a mockery of the fans who supported him all these years - a pious stance of "hey, I'm better than that now" means "hey, I'm better than you now" to those who dig the original lyrics.
You don't want to swear - don't perform the songs in with swearing. For someone who is and considers himself to be an artist, I wonder what he'd think if da Vinci had gone back and fixed the smile on the Mona Lisa before he died.

Oh hell, it's just some freakin pop songs with naughty words. It ain't that serious.

I just want him to be creatively open and put out what he feels
not what onlookers approve of or what crazy fams want. Art is created from emotions so my only hope is that he continues to put the same feelings into his songs with out guilt. cool
If you will, so will I

This is always a tough 1. I don't think the lack of cursing has hurt his music per se, but the lyric changes on the old stuff is downright goofy. Still, I guess it's better than not hearing them at all.

I was never a fan of his excessive cursing like in Days of Wild, but few strong words here and there were fine.

You know what's funny? Prince didn't even curse that much on his 80s records...it wasn't until the nineties that he seemed to excessively curse. Very good point, EWM..

See, some of ya'll got it confused...it wasn't the swearing that made Prince controversial...it was the overt sexuality in his lyrics.

I agree, it seemed like Prince was cursing just for the hell of it, to prove he was "hard" or something, I don't know... shrug

Yeah, I do kinda miss the old swearing version of Prince. It wouldn't kill him to let out a few naughty words. But he shouldn't just swear for the sake of swearing. He should do it because that's what he really feels like expressiing.

And, no, God will not punish him for it. That's all a big joke.

Not so much. The constant cussing is what jacked up the Exodus album ... well that and Sonny T singing lead on a lot of the songs. I wouldn't have a problem with a "damn" here and an "ass" there but the excessive f-bombs and nig*a (yeah it's not a curse word but still) this and that is just stupid.

I know. His facial expressions are so much better than him cussing some times. He's got the ability to give somebody that "what the fuck" look that's more effective than him actually saying it. lol

Exactly. It was really about the sex, with a few four-letters sprinkled in for effect. In fact, he used them so sparingly that they were actually really effective when he did. Which is why I think people remember it as his having cursed a lot.

Me, I miss the hard-core sexuality. I was too young to appreciate it at the time. But I do think he keeps a bit of the sexy too. Like in Pretty Man when he talks about his booty and Baby Knows when he talks about her having the butt that goes round and she makes you want to pay. I wish he'd do more of that. I think when he adds stuff like "don't make me have to give you this ring, baby" he is able to square things with himself. More, more, more... I say.
Come here, babe.. yeah...

That's about where I stand on it. I'm not gonna cry if he doesn't swear ever again, but I can't say I understand why he thinks he needs to censor his language. I really don't see that there's any good reason to do so, and when he starts using phrases like "don't give a duck" -well, that's just silly. How old is he? Four?

Exactly. When he sings stuff like "don't give a duck" he just sounds stupid.

I know Prince has never relied on swearing in his best songs, but a simple "damn" could've improved a line like that so easily, so it's a shame he feels like he can't cause of religious convictions.

Not that I believe or follow these rules, but...

The Bible condemns taking the name of God in vain. This would include phrases and words like "damn" "damn it" and "oh my God".
This does not include words like "fuck" "shit" "piss" "cunt" etc. At the very most those words could be considered rude in certain company, but certainly not swears. If he has indeed stopped swearing due to his religious beliefs, well, hate to say it -but it's stupid. If people bothered to think about what that particular passage says, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

confuse I don't get what's supposed to be so funny about that. "Motherfucker" has an "er" on the end of it, and you're supposed to pronounce it.

I bet if Prince started out a show by screaming "Get on the dance floor, muthafuckas!," the crowd would go nuts, and in a good way.

Who the hell wants a G-rated Prince?
