You know what? This wasn't what I expected. He didn't really sound bitter or anything. I had the impression that he left under negative terms, but that they made up. Hmmm...

I also don't know what's not to get about Wendy & Lisa, but maybe that's just the small-town Midwestern mind of our Lady show type person.

the book would probably be good, not so much as it's about his time with Prince, but about what the band dynamic was.

Um, what the hell do they mean by that whole Wendy and Lisa comment? It kind of pissed me off. I don't know why though. I kind of felt like maybe it was a homophobic comment. Am I reading into things. I'm not a sensitive fag, just a touchy one, sometimes.

Hi EverlastingNow,

Ugh, I can't believe that they had to go there. The split second that she said that, I was hoping that Dez wouldn't respond. I was hoping he would say something like "What do you mean?" He kind of let me down. It may be because of his new found religion. I know not all people that are into church feel the same way so I'm not generalizing. The thing that pissed me off was that so many of us thought he was sexy back in the day. Why did we think that? Well part of it was all the homoeroticism going on in the stage show. Hello.

I want to write to the show and see what their defense is.

everyone is coming up with a judgement based on a few words. its not public knowledge that lisa and wendy were an item. true prince fans knew, but not his bandwagon base of fans. has anyone considered that dez just didn't like the dynamic of prince and wendy and lisa? he would not be the first person to say that they didn't like p's music during the lisa and wendy years. are those two recognized as homophobes?

I didn't know what Dez and that drunk meant either by Wendy and Lisa. Lesbians or straight hetero women, it don't make no difference. Wendy and Lisa were a force to be recond with in Prince's band. I'm not takin' nothin' from Dez because he was a force too. But don't be actin' like you are better than somebody because you found God. I thought Wendy was a good replacement after Dez because she could play funky and she was different it wasn't another copy cat of Dez.

As far as the Dez not sounding bitter, I guess he wouldn't be because he gave it up, he quit. He didn't get fired.

*Note* I'm really not trying to be funny by this, but if nobody said this was Dez Dickerson, I would've sworn this was a White guy talking. He didn't sound like a black man not one lick. (Not to get it confused with Black people who talk proper English, don't get it confused) He sounded White.

How odd...

That woman presenter says that 'Pop Life' is "the jam" and etcetera but then goes on to say that she "didn't get" Wendy & Lisa. What didn't she get?

i see what you mean, but that still boils down to...how is a black man supposed to speak? i've heard many black peeps in that area talk about how the region was kind of forward thinking and was used to being exposed to other groups of people. just like a lot of people here in the bay area. you can't always tell that we are black by the way we speak. even the slang here is used by all kinds of people other than african american.

I understand what you mean about Dez sounding white. I think that it has to do with where he grew up. I mean they all have a Minneapolis accent, if there is one. Maybe it's more of an environemtal thing than a black or white thing.

I know that it's possible that Lisa and Wendy were not an item. There was a strong push for people to believe that though, come on Computer Blue. I just got that feeling. If they would've expressed their sentiments regarding Prince, Wendy and Lisa the way that you did, then I would've believed it was about the music.

I also wanted to mention that even if Wendy and/or Lisa are gay just because they are always together doesn't mean they're lovers. My best friend and I are both gay and we're not a couple.

Yes that woman is annoying and you can tell she threw Wendy and Lisa in there just to make it sound like she knew Dez's replacement. I also found it funny that she didn't "get the Wendy and Lisa" thing but didn't praises Pop Life and not a song that Dez was on lol

I always thought Dez sounded cool too, I even have his book and cd's. I just didn't understand his comment about not understanding the girls, "that's why I didn't go into them in my book." Made him sound bitter.

Let's stop living in a fantasy world people. Black people have a different why of speaking. Sometimes due to a regional accent, poor english, and slang.

Dez just did not have any of that going on. I was not surprised because he is from Minneapolis and they all seem devoid of any sort of accent.

P.S. I am not trying to imply that only black people speak incorrect english. We just have a way of putting an extra spin on it.

clapping A-fuckin-men, you hit the nail right on the head, I could not agree with you more. To be honest, I'm a bit surprised that anybody would make the assumption that Dez's comment about not getting Wendy and Lisa was due to the fact that they are gay. Dez never said in the interview that Wendy and Lisa's sexual orientation was why he was not "getting them", and to make that assumption is like putting words into Dez's mouth.

It also surprises me that some people are making the comment that Dez "sounds white". What difference does it make how Dez talks? He's still a nice guy and no doubt a talented musician, which is what people should be focusing on, not on how he talks.

I must have missed that memo also.

Yo,yo,yo kno'wha'I'msayin' black people spose ta' talk like errbody in dem videos on MTV... kno'wha'I'msayin'. Big ups to Prince for lettin' Dez roll wit 'im back in da day. rolleyes

Regarding the Wendy & Lisa comment, Dez was there so I would guess he has a little bit of insight on what was going on behind the scenes before he left the band. And I don't think his comment had anything to do with their sexual orientation.

Wow, A lot of sensitive people here, I enjoyed the interview, I even enjoyed the lady with her squeeky voice, she asked good questions and she was the one keeping the conversation going, I enjoyed the windy and lisa days, but I think the better music was made prior to them coming on board, The revolution before W & L was tighter, they could cover more and they all seemed to be like a hand and a glove. I love W & L, but they wasn't all that talented if you ask me, when they left and did their own thing, kind of boring, I could care less about their sexuality, and I don't think Dez was refering to that, I think he was refering to his playing ability and her's, it was a step down, (remember Prince did get rid of them).

Some act as if W & L is what made Prince, Now you know that is not the truth, Prince made W & L.

nod I agree, I never thought that Wendy and Lisa were all that either, contrary to popular opinion on this website. I have heard comments that Prince wrote better music when he was working with them, which is total censored. The people that Prince works with does not influence him, HE influences THEM.

Hmmm, all-star Prince band

Drums: Michael B or Sheila (though J. Blackwell goes bananas on the kit)

Lead Guitar: I actually liked Levi over Wendy or Dez. But, Wendy did hold it down. Levi was just tighter.

Bass: Sonny or Prince (Rhonda is good, too). Brown Mark . . . ehhh.

Keyboard: I'm partial to Dr. Fink and Tommy Barbarella

Piano/organ: Violet, the organ grinder. Give me Lisa

Give me Clare Fischer with the strings on selected tracks as well as the Hornzheads and we're good, baby.

But, my all-time favorite Prince band was the NPG c. 1991 (Prince, Levi Seacer, Jr., Tommy B, Sonny T, Michael Bland . . . you can leave out Tony, Kirky and Damon, though). Straight hottness. So tight!
Get the funk up!
