Geez... where do I begin? Let's see... oh: "somebody lied about the way somebody died."

So let's see:

1. Change the lyrics to fit our new beliefs instead of writing a new song.

It's his song, he can do pretty much anything he wants with it.

2. Larry Graham. Let's give him a singing part, so he can back up my new belief.

see above answer

3. The message of the song is NOT the same, if you understand why he changed it, and what the new lyrics mean.

see above

4. After singing "The Cross" for 11 years, he wants to force a change? WTF?

see above

You do the same! You asked for my thoughts then balked at my point... sorry, it struck me funny.

In other words you have nothing to say. Bear in mind I never commented one way or another on his choices.

I know you didn't comment one way or another, but your answer: "It's his song, he can do pretty much anything he wants with it.," struck me funny too.

Basically a cop out. He should go back and change all his songs then. Why just pick on a classic like The Cross?

Think of what a dreadful world this would be, if all artists, pulled stupid stunts like this.

I think "Still Would Stand All Time" is truly a gospel song with a very gospel choir sound in the back ground.

Everytime I hear this I think I should be back at Newlight Baptist Church... sing it, child! Personally, I'd like to hear more like this.

worship Amen.

...also, there's plenty of other artists, musicians and non-musicians, who revamp and remake their work all the time. it'd be kinna boring if folks stuck to just one thing and leave it at that. i don't care much for "the christ" or whatever either, but hey...it was p's prerogative to switch it up cuz he felt like it. not a damn thing you can do but not listen to it, if it turns you off that much.

Prince has been writing gospel songs forever

they may not have always contained gospel lyrics...but non-the-less they were gospel records

The Cross is not a gospel record so those of you who want to act like it is need to see Ray the movie to understand what gospel music is or go to church

How Come You Don't Call Me
Adore
On the Couch
The Question of U
Still Would Stand All Time
U Make MY Sunshine

Are all examples of gospel music wiritten and performed by Prince. Now the lyrics aren't traditional gospel clearly but anyone who knows anthing about music and not just Prince music or as I see on this sites his pop records knows this.

Its not even debatable

"The Cross" nod
"The Christ"???

the only song on your list that is remotely a gospel record is The Ladder. The rest aren't remotely gospel records. Their lyrical content do not make them a gospel record. Gospel just like POP, & RB is a style and form all to it self

it is now. seems to me that you're listenin more to the musical content of each song, as opposed to the musical and the lyrical content. the songs you listed above may have a gospel-like tinge in their sound, but they're not gospel.

and yes, "the cross" can be considered as gospel. dunno how hip you are to the gospel genre, but it has to do with telling of the coming of the lord. "the cross" is doing just that.

the Cross is rock/pop/metal song period. The "song" is what we distinguish and how songs are categorized

Prince is so good because he cover all categories and well (except Rap)

POP
RB
Phycadelic
Gospel
Rock

all kille dall of it back in the 80s ...thats what made him so astonishing

H eplayed all of these types/forms of music and well

I guess we will have to agree to disagree but it would be like saying Kiss or Erotic City are rock records...when clearly they are not

Well, you obviously have no sense of vision.

An orginal creation is just that.

Now if Prince is as creative as he leads us to believe, he would've made a new... MORE POWERFUL song about it. Instead of belittling himself to change the original... ooo, "just cause it's his."

Last time I checked, Warners owned "The Cross," so it's not really his anymore anyway.

1) no matter if he were to make a brand-spankin new version of the song, the premise would still be exactly the same.

2) ownership aside--warners didn't come up with "the cross", prince did--in that respect, it's still his creation....ew, now i feel like ol' boy all the sudden, only taller and with estrogen.

Dude, you have no clue about creative vision or art. You're probably one of those cats who whines about George Lucas making adjustments to the Star Wars movies. And yes, Warners owns "The Cross" on paper, but they didn't write it, now did they? As a songwriter, nobody will ever tell me what I can or can't do with a tune, so you and me will never see eye-to-eye on this. I'll defend any songwriter/artist in the world when it comes to their art/vision. Why? Simple. It's theirs, NOT YOURS.

I didn't balk at your point, because I didn't see one. I saw no reason to go back in forth in discussion about your ideas because they haven't proven anything or provoked me to change my mind. Seems OdyseeyMiles and ifsixwuz9 have done a great job of breaking it down for you. All I can do is hope you learn something shrug

All of you live in a different world than I do.

I am an artist. I have had my work used in many publications, and not always as my original intent.

Bottom line is "The Christ" SUCKED! It made a mockery of the original vision. If you like "The Christ" listen to it. I will stick with "The Cross!"

And by the way odyssey... as much as I love Star Wars, George did ruin certain parts of it, although improved on others... I'd still rather have the theatrical releases on DVD.

Like you said, you've got your copy, so listen to that. When you say he shouldn't change his own art, then you take away your own artistic freedom to ever do the same if you so choose. My point was that we should all have that right.
