In an interview with Rolling Stone, Prince mentioned the follow up album to 1999 that he never released because he thought it sounded too similiar to 1999. Does anyone have any info on this unreleased album. 1999 being one of my favorites, I would love this album. | |

The Flesh Side A: 01. Junk Music Side B: 02. Up From Below 03. Y'All Want Some More? 04. A Couple Of Miles I guess maybe you could also include the early version of Lovesexy (with The Line, the early version of Lovesexy, Positivity w/Cat's 'Music Is The Key' rap and sans I Wish U Heaven), and maybe also the first batch of songs recorded with Ingrid Chavez (see The Vault page 88)? I think this is pretty much all the info we have. One would guess it's mostly the strongest material that was left off 1999 and some of the earlier cuts that didn't make it on "Purple Rain". Most of the material he recorded those days is pretty well documented (and circulating for that matter as well), so I don't think there would be far too many surprises on it. | |

Though as I said before, these lists of unreleased albums can be a bit misleading, as the vast majority of them are 'works in progress'. Where do you draw the line? I think that Come/Gold thread showed that this subject is not as straightforward as people would think. There are often numerous configurations of albums tried out before it's released or shelved, only some of which we ever hear about. Just picking on the ones that get printed in The Vault is only gonna give you part of the picture. Albums are changing, growing things that can sometimes get revised on a daily basis. Why just show the one configuration of 'Dream Factory'? It wasn't finished when it was shelved, it was actually in a state of flux and was moving away from it's original concept when that happened. Even listing the other 2 main configurations doesn't give the whole picture. Then again there's projects like 'The Rebels'. This never even got as far as having a tracklist or sequence. There were some songs recorded for it, but had the project actually been released it would certainly have had more songs recorded, and probably would have lost a few of the ones listed. Paisleypark4, the thread is cool, and its going to be a great help to people, but I think actually giving track lists, rather than statements of intention, can be misleading. A lot of the lists are guess work at best. The Vault, whilst great, is full of a LOT of errors. Before you know it, someone will be wanting you to add the track list to "Heart" and the "Purple Rain" double album....! . | |

I think this is a matter of semantics.
You could change the title of the thread to something like "Prince Unreleased & W.I.P. Albums '79 - 2001" And add a bold disclaimer at the very top of the thread stating something like: "These tracklists in most cases only represent one Work In Progress snap-shot of each project, and do not represent any kind of final configuration as it may have been released. In fact, there are often numerous work in progress configurations of any given project Prince has worked on - In most cases, these do not represent any final configuration, only a work in progress." This way newbies don't get the impression that this list is the be all and end all of unreleased albums, projects and their configurations, and oldies don't have to keep correcting and stating that a particular tracklist is not definitive. Then we can continue adding to the tracklist, maybe with more info than just the tracklists, also who was involved, dates, a little paragraph that puts the project in chronological/historical context pertaining to the Prince cannon. AND you can even add a kind of 'further reading' link if there has been any particularly informative, or lengthy thread on one particular project/era, for example - the 'Evidence of COme 1993' thread.

I enjoy these kinds of threads, but you do need to take into account that Newbie's will read it in it's current state and assume that say, 'The Rebels' listing is an actual sequenced tracklist when it's not, it's just a list of songs recorded for the project (not in any order). This is particularly true of the often quoted "High" tracklist. This get's repeated SO often that it becomes 'true', even though it was never an actual sequence for that album. It does get mildly annoying when Newbies then go and quote these tracklists as being fact, and don't believe you when you try and correct them. I just think it's important to qualify things where necessary, with a simple statement like "actual tracklist unknown, but songs to be included were..." etc. | |
