I FINALLY saw the video. It's excellent. Definetly one of his best videos. It's also one of the darkest because of the subject matter but nonetheless excellent. Prince is knocking them out of the park with this one.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Oh man! I couldn't see the video yet, but with your all rewiews, I can paint me an image from. The song is very fine and I think the video too. Would love it to see it soon. I could cry, what I'm maybe doing right now, in me. Strange, but I feel personal touched at maximum. As I would see in a mirror. And I will make my silver thounge to a golden silence, till I learned how the middleway works for me: it would be platín!
Thank you for your impression.
Peace for all!

CG was not a favorite of mine...but the video is great and helps me understand the song...I am very visual. I also agree that this is not an anti anything but hate video. It tell s the story of turning the corner on hate and revenge. Nicely done...Prince Baby....Hope it makes it to TV! :rose:

I think your interpretation is too literal.

This video says exactly what I've been warning my American friends against, which is : if we react to terrorism with intolerance in a bid for revenge or extra security, we might very well perpetuate the problem, and some of it might even start in a schoolyard. Hatred invites more of the same. If you have to kill thousands of innocent people to catch an handful of terrrorists, the survivors will feel a great injustice and you'll actually have better conditions for terrorism. There are people who think Bush should just have carpet-bombed the arab world, not even giving a thought to the fanaticism this kind of strategy might provoke.

Yeah, I agree with that. To create a metaphor, 9/11 was like a stone being thrown in a calm pond - ripples emanate out, and you if you try to stop the ripples by throwing more stones, all you'll do is create more ripples. It's self-perpetuationg. The more you try to stamp out terrorism by blunt violent means, the more terrorists you create in it's wake.

I'm glad they got a good actress for this short role - it was very good casting.

ok i agree with these interpretations of what prince is trying to convey with the video

but he seems to be pretty simple minded about the issue.

terrorists attacked the US because of their FANATIC RELIGIOUS BELIEFS, not because people were making fun of their skin color. no one taunted osama bin laden about his skin color and turned him into a terrorist.

does anyone else find it weird that prince overlooks the role religion played in 9/11?

no mention of how fanatic, fundamentalist religious beliefs motivate terrorist forces? imo religion plays a far more significant causal role in today's mess than did skin color

Many are arguing that FANATIC RELIGIOUS BELIEFS is the key cause of terrorism. Not that I'm arguing against that. But, coming from Oklahoma City, how does one explain Timothy McVeigh? (Just playing Devil's Advocate)

I've enjoyed reading everyone's take on the video and the song over the past week, and agree and disagree with some of y'all: the slant/focus on the terrorist act of 9/11 has more to do with religion than skin color, but the media and Joe Schmo would rather focus on skin color instead.

I remember having to travel by airplane up to the Bay area a few months after 9/11, for my best friend's wedding. I was pulled to the side twice on the same flight for a "random" search of my backpack purse, shoes, and body behind my curtain while my daughter was made to wait. And, I remembered wondering afterwards..."what the hell?" Why was I singled out, TWICE, to be searched when everyone else with carry-on luggage was being hurriedly rushed in (my girl and I only had medium-sized backpack purses, nothing else)??? confused

Then I remembered the few times in high school and college years ago, while traveling and having people asking me if I was Indian or something. "No, just Mexican." This wasn't a question that we get a lot, growing up in a mostly Mexican community.

When Prince was doing his One Nite Alone tour, when he did his little speech at the beginning of Xenophobia, saying "please remove your shoes; you're about to be searched" --I remember thinking, "YEAH! That was me!" eek

Then with "Cinnamon Girl" song and video, I can definitely relate to having people look at you a little more closely because of skin/hair/eye color (that dark combo) when you are anywhere with security measures.

I don't generally mind; I rather be looked at or a little inconvenienced if it adds to more heightened awareness from the otherwise slackjawed rent-a-cops at the airport or stadiums.

But, I was surely a little peeved when I was separated, even for a minute, from my then 8 year old daughter; to be put behind a screen so they could go through my purse and shoes. neutral

For sure, religious fanatics are a major source of terrorism, but it's not the onlyh one and the problem can't be reduced to any single form of hatred. Look at McVeigh or at the events in Russia. It's a huge mistake to think terrorism comes from one kind of people, and that is why the whole notion of the War on Terror is way too broad. It's precisely because our fear and anger is in such broad strokes that we risk creating more terrorism while meaning to fight it.

In this way, the video is relevant because it shows how our response to one senseless act can create the seed of injustice and resentment, and push more people in to the arms of fanatics of one kind or another.

ok i can dig this part of the message in the video.

i guess i'm just disappointed because the message in the video is so .. .. i just feel it's a bit oversimplified for today's real world. but that's my opinion

and, to be honest it bugs me he's scrawled a reference to matthew 5:5 on his face. .. (assuming this is what he means, which most people seem to accept)
thereby bringing religion into the video one way or another but having done so he declines to really address how differing religious beliefs have contributed to the creation of the problems we face regarding muslim extremists around the world

again, just my opinion. it's prince's project after all

1. It's only a 4 minute video, not a lot of time to get across a HUGE story/plot like the subject the song deals with.

2. Like it or not religion is the very backbone of which these muslim extremists do what they do. Take this however you want, but the Middle East has been fighting for 100's of years about something or other. And almost every time, the backbone of the battle is religion.

Prince is the ONLY mainstream artist to really put religion on the front burner. His new video is doing what it's supposed to do, make you think. That's more than 99.99999% of the videos on T.V. can say.

But that's just my point of view.
