Nobody messes with my band! (Photo from and review of 8/31 show) ![]() By Patrick MacDonald pmacdonald@seattletimes.com Seattle Times music critic Thursday, September 02, 2004, 12:00 a.m. Pacific Although the set list was essentially the same — but with some interesting changes — Prince's second night at KeyArena Tuesday was even tighter than the Monday show. He emphasized his whip-crack control over his eight-piece band, New Power Generation, by having them start and stop on a dime, assigning surprise solos, and having them change tempos in the middle of a jam. The band responded perfectly, which made Prince smile. "Right in the pocket!" he exclaimed during "D.M.S.R.," when the band instantly responded to a quick chop of his right hand and got back to the rhythm pattern of the song, after he had extended their jam so he could reach for a bouquet of flowers offered by a fan. "Seattle, you don't understand," Prince said after the opening number, "Musicology," "this is the tightest show you will ever see." Later, after several band solos during "Controversy," he grabbed a microphone and yelled, "Nobody messes with my band!" During his solo spot, sitting on a swivel chair in the middle of the in-the-round set, he did a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction," and he did a funny bit he didn't do on Monday, directed to "the ladies in the house." It was about "rules" regarding the toilet seat, shopping (don't take your man), sports on TV and other subjects. "Are you still with me, ladies?" he asked after each rule. And, of course, they were. A cover of "Knock On Wood," with Prince sharing vocals with the big keyboardist who goes by the name RAD, was added, and saxophonist Maceo Parker sang "What A Wonderful World," rather than "Georgia On My Mind," during his solo spot. During "Kiss," Prince pointed to someone in the audience and said "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy!" Was Carson Kressley in the crowd? The costume color scheme was different, with Prince wearing the same kind of topcoat, only red this time rather than white. The band members wore red, black and white. The show started much later, more than an hour past the scheduled 7:30 showtime. The show lasted about the same time, two hours. Yes, I did email the editor at the Seattle Times (once) letting him know about how both reviews contained multiple errors. I let him know that my fact checking services would be available free of charge when Prince swings through Seattle again. Don't worry, I'll try not to pull one of these (1/2/3) if the opportunity presents itself ![]() [Edited 9/2/04 4:11am]

I think it would be a lot easier for Chance Howard to simply change his name to RAD than for journalists to get their facts straight.

And I thought he looked rather tired... Anyone looks tired when you manage to photgraph them mid-blink - because their eye-lids look droopy. Paparrazi often use this technique to make celebrities artificially seem worse-for-wear, like when they've just come out of a club or something. Although here I imagine he is doing a soulful squint down to the floor mid 'Question of U'. Or perhaps he was fast asleep in the middle of the show? "Yeah, wake me up when that guy comes on and plays Purple Rain. Shit, that's me!" ![]()

![]() it must be like herpes or something... tony m is like a disease that goes away for 7 years, and then comes back to play a part in destroying something else... Tony M.? The rapping on "1999: The New Master" is by Doug E. Fresh. And I like Prince's cover of "Everyday Is a Winding Road"... much better than the original, anyway. ![]() Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |
