The evolution of COME & GOLD 1993-1994

Let’s just recap what we have figured out so far by listing all the Come & Gold configurations from 1993-1994 known at this point. biggrin

I hope that BorishFishpaw (and anyone else for that matter) will be able to correct what I may have gotten wrong and/or add additional information, like the track list for the configurations I have listed as unknown. pray

All track times for the Come albums are for the latest versions of songs that were made at the times of sequencing, but they are not confirmed, except for the March 11th 1994 configuration. no no no!

Released configurations are not included in this list. hmph!

Please, do NOT reply quoting this entire post! omfg Only quote the specific track list(s) you’re commenting on. nod

It isn't known which of the Come configurations listed as 30 May 1993 and June-August 1993 actually came first. The only difference between them is the placing of Interactive, so both were probably made within a short period of time.

Prince: Come cassette (probably May 1993) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Come (5:27)
Endorphin Machine (3:48)
Space (5:26)
Pheromone (4:24)
Loose (3:22)
Papa (2:19)
Dark (6:26)
Dolphin (6:27)
Poem (3:36)

prince : Come (30 May 1993) – date from “Mayte’s” fax to Controversy #42, track list mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Interactive (3:06)
Come (4:29)
Endorphinemachine (3:48)
Space (5:26)
Pheromone (4:24)
Loose (3:22)

Race (4:01)
Peach (3:48)

Dark (6:26)
Solo (3:48)
Dolphin (5:27)
Poem (3:36)

BorisFishpaw mentioned unknown configurations expanding Come to also include What’s My Name, Johnny, Zannalee and The Ride. Unless that actually happened on The Dawn, then those configurations would probably fit here.

prince : The Dawn (latter part of 1993) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Track list unknown but triple album introducing the NPG Operator segues and expanding Come to include the songs that would become The Gold Experience. The version of Poem that segues with What's My Name may or may not have been the opening track on one of the discs.

prince : The Beautiful Experience EP (early 1994) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Track list unknown but 7-track EP including Come and The Most Beautiful Girl In The World, possibly a kind of soundtrack to the TV movie.

prince : Gold (1994) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw

Billy Jack Bitch (5:32)
Eye Hate U (5:54)
NPG Operator (0:45)
Gold (7:23)

prince : Come (April-May 1994) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Come – either Beautiful Experience TV movie version or Poem re-titled

Space (4:30)
Pheromone (4:24)
Loose (3:27)

The Most Beautiful Girl In The World (4:25)
Dolphin (4:59)
NPG Operator (0:20)
Now (4:30)
NPG Operator (0:14)
319 (3:19)
NPG Operator (0:10)
Shy (5:04)
Billy Jack Bitch (5:32)
Eye Hate U (5:54)
NPG Operator (0:45)
Gold (7:23)

Prince: Come EP (latter half of 1994) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Track list unknown, but 7 versions of Come, including 18 & Over and The Beautiful Experience TV movie version

Prince: Loose! single (latter part of 1994) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Track list unknown but probably includes Lemme See That Body (Get Loose!). Possibly re-titled The Tora Tora Experience in 1995.

prince : Chaos And Disorder (late 1994)
Track list unknown but includes: 18 & Over, The Same December, I Like It There, Zannalee and Empty Room

Well? biggrin

WB were not happy with the album and asked for the inclusion of several newer stronger tracks like 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World' and 'Days Of Wild', as well as the actual title track 'Come', which had been inexplicably dropped.

I've read that they also asked for Shhh after having seen it in The Beautiful Experience TV movie. biggrin

BorisFishpaw said:

PRINCE AGREED, and submitted another new version of the album (including all these tracks) to WB on March 19th. Unfortunately the tracklist for this configuration is not known

Are you sure Prince complied? Because surely Warners would have only been happy to receive The Most Beautiful Girl In The World and to release such a configuration rather than what they ended up receiving and releasing. confuse

So what Prince agreed to, wasn't that just to give them the title-track as well as "one strong track"? And then Prince decided that Letitgo fit that description! stab

Please note that Prince recorded two other one-word titled tracks in early 1993: Dream and two versions of Laurianne. nod

But did any of those tracks - which are not circulating - ever make any of the configurations? confuse

Also, I wonder what configuration had Poem segued with What's My Name? confuse

Yep, as stated by Boris earlier in the thread. A version called Lemme See That Body (Get Loose) performed by Tora Tora ( prince in disguise) is circulating. It's a different mix of Get Loose that was released on the Crystal Ball. biggrin

To add to the confusion, Lemme See That Body (Get Loose) was originally entitled Get Loose, and Get Loose was originally titled Loose Dub. Or something. nuts

I received The Vault yesterday, and believe it or not I'm still more engrossed in this thread... This whole period was probably my favorite time to be a fan - constantly hearing about and finding top-rated tracks unexpectedly.

Just do it like I do it when writing long posts - write them off-line in Word and then go online and copy/paste them on the Org. biggrin

The evolution of COME & GOLD 1993-1994

Please, do NOT reply quoting this entire post! omfg Only quote the specific track list(s) you’re commenting on. nod

Sorry, but I'm gonna do exactly that razz
(I couldn't face redoing my long explaination post again)

prince : Come (probably May 1993) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Come (5:27)
Endorphin Machine (3:48)
Space (5:26)
Pheromone (4:24)
Loose (3:22)
Papa (2:19)
Dark (6:26)
Dolphin (6:27)
Poem (3:36)

This was compiled onto cassette, and was probably never intended as an actual 'sequence'
for 'Come'. At this point he may not even have had any intention of releasing these tracks
as a conventional 'album' (He was actually working on a 'Come' musical at the time!)

prince : Come (30 May 1993) – mentioned in “Mayte’s” fax to Controversy #42
Track list unknown but the fax mentions Come, Race, Pheromone, Dark, Dolphin and Pope

Again, see above. It's unknown exactly what this was. It could have been all the current
songs compiled into an order (it's unlikely to have been an actual 'album' as such). It may
have been an early configuration of the Come musical or Glam Slam Ulysses show (or
Glam-O-Rama, as it was originally known). At this point Prince had gone off the idea of
releasing 'albums' and 'singles' in the conventional sense of the words. Or it may have been
the sequence listed a little further down...

prince : The Undertaker (June 1993)
The Ride (10:53)
Poorgoo (4:26)
Honky Tonk Women (2:59)
Bambi (4:03)
Zannalee (Prelude) (0:47)
The Undertaker (9:43)
Dolphin (3:35)

This was a side project/experiment in recording a whole session live to DAT. It also only
represents part of the actual session, as songs such as Peach and a full version of
Zannalee (amongst others) were recorded, but not released. None of these particular
versions of tracks were used on any other projects than this (as far as we know).

prince : Come (probably June 1993) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Track list unknown but has Interactive placed before Come and Endorphin Machine spelled Endorphinemachine

Just one of many compilations of 'Come' tracks from this time (I think Prince wasn't quite
sure where to place Interactive).

Also, around this time he completed the NPG's 'Goldnigga' album and recorded a new
version of Madhouse - 24 (unreleased).

prince : Come (July-August 1993) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Come (4:29)
Endorphinmachine (3:48)
Space (5:26)
Pheromone (4:24)
Loose (3:22)
Papa (2:48)
Race (4:01)
Peach (3:48)
Pope (3:28)
Dark (6:26)
Solo (3:48)
Dolphin (5:27)
Poem (3:36)

The time of this compilation is not known. It's even possible that it's actually the one
mentioned by Mayte from May (as she did say that the sequence she heard only had songs
with one word titles, so tracks like What's My Name or Strays Of The World couldn't have been
included). It certainly seems more 'album like'. Or it may be from much later, who knows?

BorisFishpaw mentioned unknown configurations expanding Come to also include What’s My Name, Johnny, Zannalee and The Ride. Unless that actually happened on The Dawn, then those configurations would probably fit here.

Yes, I'm not at all sure that 'Come' (as an album) had even been called 'Come' yet at this
point (neither Prince or Mayte ever mention an actual album title with regard to all the one
word titled songs at this stage) This is more likely to be the first stages of ditching the
exclusive use of one word titled songs, and the expansion into a more eclectic collection
of songs (The Dawn).

prince : The Dawn (latter part of 1993) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Track list unknown but triple album introducing the NPG Operator segues and expanding Come to include the songs that would become The Gold Experience.

Now this is the crunch period, where, in my opinion, what Prince wanted to do artistically, and
what actually happened seperated. He wanted to create 'The Dawn', a triple album
opus that would be an audacious debut for "prince".....But, he wanted to get out of his WB
contract more, and didn't want to give them his 'masterwork' (it should be the opening of a
NEW chapter, not tied to the closing of the old one). If he'd managed to come to some
kind of agreement with WB, and/or been freed from his contract early, I've no doubt that
'Come', 'The Gold Experience', 'The Black Album', 'Chaos And Disorder' and 'The Vault...Old
Friends 4 Sale' would never have been released, and we would all be playing 'The Dawn' on
our CD players instead.

prince : The Beautiful Experience (1993-1994) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Track list unknown but The Dawn pared down to a single album

Now this is where things definitely get rather confused, as the title 'The Beautiful Experience'
was applied to several ideas. It was originally going to be the title of a 7-track mini-album
or ep featuring 7 different tracks (not 7 versions of the same one). Now whether this was
intended as a 'sampler' for 'The Dawn' or whether 'The Dawn' had been totally scrapped by
this point I don't know, but from what I heard he was planning on releasing it independantly
(like 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World'). My theory is that he thought he could get around
WB because it could be classed as an EP rather than an album, and he could get more music
out. WB didn't agree and put a stop to it. So the only way he could put it out was if it were
only multiple versions of the same track that WB had already given him permission to
release independantly (though he could broadcast a TV special with the title without their
interference).

prince : Gold (1994) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Track list unknown but formerly The Beautiful Experience, re-titled when The Beautiful Experience became EP

The earliest known version of what would be 'The Gold Experience' was simply called 'Gold'
or 'The Gold Album'. Prince had a CDR of it which he took to a few clubs for the DJ to play
tracks from it. It was packaged in a plain Gold sleeve (like 'The Black Album). It's unknown
what the exact tracklist was.

prince: The radio tape (6 March 1994)
The Beautiful Experience Medley (10:32)
Interactive (2:25)
Days Of Wild (4:03)
Now (4:46)
Poem (3:36)
Acknowledge Me (5:28)
319 (3:21)
Pheromone (4:36)

Self explanatory. A compilation tape of new tracks given to some radio stations so they
could play them on air.

prince : Come (11 March 1994)
Poem (3:36)
Interactive (3:06)
Endorphine Machine (3:50)
Space (4:30)
Pheromone (4:24)
Loose (3:27)
Papa (2:49)
Race (4:17)
Dark (6:08)
Solo (3:51)
Strays Of The World (5:07)

The first version of 'Come' to actually be submitted to WB. They rejected it, wanting the
inclusion of the title track (which Prince had probably only omitted to piss them off) and
a few other new tracks, including the recent hit 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World'.

Prince agreed..... but (contrary to what I said earlier...my mistake) he DIDN'T deliver it.
He did start work on it though, but changed his mind when he decided to call it a 'Prince'
album, and removed some of the 'prince' tracks (though in reality, almost all of them were
prince tracks).

BorisFishpaw mentioned a configuration expanding Come to also include Shhh. If so, then that would probably fit here, as Prince supposedly recorded Shhh on Warner Brothers’ request, but decided to put it on The Gold Experience instead.

See above, my mistake. WB asked for 'Shhh' to be included, but he didn't actually do it.
(it was knocking around at that time though, and may well have been included on 'The Dawn')

Prince: Come (April-May 1994) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Come – either Beautiful Experience TV movie version or Poem re-titled
Interactive (3:06)
Endorphinmachine (3:50)
Space (4:30)
Pheromone (4:24)
Loose (3:27)
Papa (2:49)
Race (4:17)
Dark (6:08)
Solo (3:51)
Come – supposedly the released, long version continuing into hidden track:
Strays Of The World (5:07)

This was a version compiled soon after Prince had recorded the new long version of 'Come',
just prior to his decision to cut the so called 'prince' songs from the album and credit it to
'Prince'. After this he made the version of the album that was released. WB still weren't
happy with it, but Prince refused to change it any further. He has since as good as admitted
that he deliberately took off some of the stronger tracks, and gave WB only half the album
'Come' could have been, using it as 'contract filler'.

prince : The Gold Experience (pre-May 1994)
NPG Operator (0:12)
Interactive (2:25)
NPG Operator (0:10)
Days Of Wild (3:47)
NPG Operator (0:18)
The Most Beautiful Girl In The World (4:25)
NPG Operator (0:20)
Now (4:30)
Acknowledge Me (5:27)
Ripopgodazippa (4:39)
NPG Operator (0:31)
319 (3:05)
NPG Operator (0:10)
Shy (5:04)
Billy Jack Bitch (5:32)
Eye Hate U (5:54)
NPG Operator (0:45)
Gold (7:23)

Submitted to WB on the same day as the final version of 'Come'. Prince wanted them to
release both albums simultaneously, so Prince would compete with prince in the charts
(He made sure that "prince" had the better album). WB actually accepted the album, but
refused to release them both at the same time. Since they weren't going to release it
immediately, Prince carried on working on the album. The final 5 songs never changed,
but before it's final configuration, various tracks came and went (like 'Hide The Bone').

prince : Heart (1994) – mentioned by Levi Seacer, Jr.
Track list unknown but acoustic album

Unfortunately, nothing is known about this album, other than that it existed, and was
mentioned by Levi.

prince : The Gold Experience (September/October 1994)
P. Control (5:59)
NPG Operator (0:12)
Endorphinmachine (4:07)
Shhh! (7:18)
We March (4:49)
NPG Operator (0:05)
Days Of Wild (3:46)
NPG Operator (0:18)
The Most Beautiful Girl In The World (4:25)
Dolphin (4:59)
NPG Operator (0:20)
Now (4:30)
NPG Operator (0:14)
319 (3:19)
NPG Operator (0:10)
Shy (5:04)
Billy Jack Bitch (5:32)
Eye Hate U (5:54)
NPG Operator (0:45)
Gold (7:23)

The final version to be sequenced. Though when it was eventually released, Prince had
removed 'Days Of Wild' (and it's NPG Operator). I suspect that he removed it for two
reasons. 1- He'd actually made several attempts to record this track in the studio, but for
some reason it never captured the excitement of it's live incarnations. And 2- the track had
been singled out by many reviewers as being a bit weak and childish (mostly due to the
needless excessive swearing).

Prince: Come EP (latter half of 1994) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Track list unknown, but 7 versions of Come, including 18 & Over and The Beautiful Experience TV movie version

I don't know for sure, but I got the impression that Prince was gonna release this
independently, but WB wouldn't allow it.

Prince: Loose! single (latter part of 1994) – mentioned by BorisFishpaw
Track list unknown but probably includes Lemme See That Body (Get Loose!) and So Dark

Same as above. There was also gonna be something released called 'The Tora Tora Experience'.
The tracklist isn't known, but it was going to include '(Lemme See Your Body) Get Loose!'

prince : Chaos And Disorder (late 1994)
Track list unknown but includes: 18 & Over, The Same December, I Like It There, Zannalee and Empty Room

Well? biggrin

Well, you could never accuse Prince of being a slacker could you?

Me, too. biggrin

Which is why the Prince & The New Power Generation: Peach - Act 2 August Ten 1993 bootleg is indespensable because of the encore section with a powerful rendition of Come (including spoken lines from What's My Name) followed by Endorphinemachine and Peach. You can actually taste the atmosphere on that record. It's like the friggin' second coming, or something. :awe:

Definitely one of my all-time top 5 live recordings, possibly even number one on that list. biggrin

hmmm Interactive wasn't recorded until June, so it's unlikely that was the configuration Mayte heard in May. But probably something quite like it. Yes, it does indeed sound very album-like. I'll have to make myself a tape of this configuration. biggrin

So the only way he could put it out was if it were
only multiple versions of the same track that WB had already given him permission to
release independantly (though he could broadcast a TV special with the title without their
interference).

hmmm If it was a 7 track EP, then maybe it was actually the 7 tracks that he sent to radio stations? (Minus The Beautiful Experience Medley.) Those tracks all appeared in The Beautiful Experience TV movie and it could have been a sort of soundtrack to that. confuse

Okay, then I can scrap this from the list which is already VERY long. biggrin

Borisfishpaw said:

Prince refused to change it any further. He has since as good as admitted that he deliberately took off some of the stronger tracks, and gave WB only half the album 'Come' could have been, using it as 'contract filler'.

Indeed. As it was released, it was mostly just an R&B album rather than the great Rock/Funk/R&B album it started out as. sad

Same as above. There was also gonna be something released called 'The Tora Tora Experience'.
The tracklist isn't known, but it was going to include '(Lemme See Your Body) Get Loose!'

Was The Tora Tora Experience an idea that came about AFTER the Loose! single, or was there no Loose! single, only The Tora Tora Experience? confuse

And once again, thank you for the feedback. kiss2

Thank you everyone for sharing all of this information!

I have been blown away by all of this stuff! It's awesome. You've even made me more interested in some of the "Come"-era stuff, and, as commercially released, that's probably the album I like the LEAST!

nod I recall reading BEFORE the release of the The Most Beautiful Girl In The World single that the B-side was going to be New World - a track inspired by an earthquake, I think in L.A. or something in early 1994. But Warners insisted on allowing only for one track, so New World had to be shelved. omfg

The story is interesting as Turn It Up Vol.2 and Days of Wild lists New World as an early 1995 Emancipation recording. Which is funny, because I'm quite sure I read it in Uptown. lol

(I can't say what issue, because I never did subscribe to Uptown myself, but my close friend Virgo did and she always borrowed me the new issues, the dear, and I'd take notes from them about unreleased songs. And Virgo and I were occassionally amazed at Uptown's ability to sometimes forget information they themselves had stated. disbelief )

eek What? eek I've never heard that - that would be cool if true, though - Boris?

I remember in the pre-Emancipation rumors that an 8-track CD single of New World was being prepared too, but that was back when rumors were flying that the first single would be The Man With The Golden Cloud...

Well, certainly New World and Beautiful, the track that replaced New World, sound rather similar. At least, I think they do. biggrin

I don't know about any New World remixes, though. I'll have to leave that to Boris. smile

Here's a little something to stir into this crazy pot:

in the early summer of 1994, right after TMBGITW had peaked and before "Love Sign" had gone to radio, Prince's version of "Shhh" charted on Billboard's R&B Airplay chart. And this wasn't a typo on Tevin Campbell's version, because it was elsewhere on the airplay chart that same week. At the time I had no idea what this was that R&B radio stations were playing, and a little over a year later, when TGE was released, I assumed it was the album version. But how did R&B radio get a hold of this in summer 1994? It wasn't on 'The Radio Tape,' and I never heard any mention of it anywhere else. So how did R&B radio stations get a copy of Prince's version of "Shhh" in summer 1994 and did Warner Bros. stop it from getting airplay?

Acording to my info, Interactive was recorded in May 1993, during the same time as he recorded
'Pope', 'Space', 'Solo', 'What's My Name' and 'Strays Of The World'. He did film a video for it
in June though.

tracklisting for it, but it was going to include 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World' and 'Come'
amongst others. I've always suspected that the 7 tracks it contained would all have been ones
that were included on the TV special of the same name that first aired on April 3rd.

One quick note about the evolution of 'ENDORPHINEMACHINE' as talked about above:
You could trace the song's origin back to 'Machine' an early demo recorded by Prince, also among the mixable "musicology" tracks put up on npgmusicclub there was a track called 'Rock Machine' that was basically an early version of Endorpinemachine.

There is more under the surface than we could ever know!

Die was supposedly recorded in 1995, so although it has a one-word title, it cannot be considered one of the one-word titled songs which we all love. biggrin

Alright. biggrin

That means it probably was on the configuration Mayte heard at the end of May, so I've merged that with the configuration that had Interactive before Come, shortening the list a bit more. Very nice detective work we've got going here, if I must say so myself. wink

You're right!

I'm sure I read it was always considered one of these one word 1993 titles, but I just checked the Vault and it's 1995 as you say.

Did Uptown get more info since their last book, or have I made a mistake all this time? hmmm

Yes! I remember hearing this played on LA radio stations around that same time period and it was a live rendition most likely from the February All Star concert (on Valentines' day) a boot of which started to widely circulate from pretty much the same sources as 'The Radio Tape'. Some Danish radio station I think. Available on a KTS CD.

But of course he did. That one is also featured in the video.
