Do you think that writing him [Prince] would bring it to his attention, or is he, understandably, too busy to attend to such things.

I guess my chosen name "formerfan" sounds a little final. I'm sure I'll warm up sometime soon.

I LOVE that he let people get up & play a song! I know it was hilarious!!! Were people watching them play, or watching HIM watch them play? OY!

Again, SO glad he's taking care of the whole ticket mess. I GOTTA have good seats when he comes to the Bay! mr.green

It also strikes me that people often accuse him of being so standoff-ish with his fans, which is pure bullshit. I can't think of another artist on his level that allows folks into soundchecks, talks with them, invites fans onstage ALL the time, opens his studio on a regular basis, has a week-long "festival" at his studio, does aftershows constantly, and starts a bloody club to liberate himself AND be more in touch with his fanbase.

Some of you are really bugged if you can't see the see it, but that's okay - stay bitter and STAY HOME! lol

If you were an NPGMC member, you would've got into the afterparty for free! There is never a quarantee that Prince will perform or for that matter show up. You take the risk.

Once again, this is not my point. I don't mind that he did not show up... I did mind that I was promised that he would, and when he didn't I wasn't entitled to a refund.

BTW, the NPGMC members, including the ones who were taken on stage as guests were NOT permitted into The Brickyard without paying 20 bucks. One of the half dozen or so girls following the wonderful "Randy" around with me, had, in fact, been on stage during the concert and felt equally slighted.

Now you know. And I agree...being pissed becuase the bar owner out right lied to you is something to be furious about. But being pissed at Prince himself for that is something totally uncalled for, IMO. I had the same thing happen to me at an afterparty in Detroit when Prince just hung out in the balcony seats of a church in the dark. No performance, just "he's here." Yes my expectations were a bit deflated, but it wasn't the end of the world. *shrug*

OH WELL

Indeed, now I know. I only wish I'd've found this website before I saw the show.

It's not the end of the world, but when the DJ promises repeatedly "Prince is on his way", keeping all 200 of us waiting until 2:30 a.m., and then some jerk offers to make it all better if you suck his dick... I'm seriously pissed.

It wasn't the bar owner who is to blame, they only sold drinks and got none of the $20 entrance fee. I walked in on a furious backroom meeting afterward, and they're on the verge of a lawsuit because of the number of complaints they received, citing their ruined reputation.

I had a bad experience with a doorman at studio 54 in LV in 2001.this guy would only let you inside for the aftershow if you stuffed big $ in his pocket! I was outraged after waiting for hours in a line of fams..we thought we were going in...that was before our music club...things do get
better!!

In Oakland last time out during the soundcheck, a fellow asked to play Habibi and Prince said "come on and play"then a second guy asked to run out and get his guitar outta the car...came back and joined the first dude playing.
This was just too fun to believe!!

WOW! He actually let fans play for him? This is exactly what I have wanted to do for years! If any of you are out there...please write about here so we can hear your version of this story firsthand.

One of these days I hope to do the same thing. I think I would play Bambi, Let's Go Crazy, Endorphine Machine, or Purple Rain for him.

I'm thrilled for those people whoever they are!

At the Oakland soundcheck last year, my brother got a chance to play P's guitar (while Prince was talking he recognized a few chords of Purple Rain and turned around and made a silly sarcastic remark) The look on Prince's face when he realized his song was being played was just too cute . . . aahh, the memories . . .

I guess it pays to do research first. I'll get over this, as soon as the uncharacteristically violent fantasies involving "Randy" and a garbage truck subside. (I've never hit anyone in my adult life...)

Man, I'd have loved to play the Purple guitar or the drums or they keys, as I play all three. Maybe the p-man would have been won over and let me sit in on a set... dreams.

the afterparty in cleveland was supposed to be dyn-o-mite..my dreams of hearing those wonderful '87-'88 afterparties were going to come true. meshell ndegeocello was in town the same night. what a ducking treat, right? wrong!!! after paying twenty dollars and watching rahsaan patterson dance next to me, something started to smell very paisley. people started getting upset after they saw the band take the instruments off of the stage and load them into the van.. at first i thought that this was the doing of the club, right? wrong again!!there was prince's head of security, the bald white guy..in the middle of this mess..so i knew that npg was involved in this fiasco...after the trash talking of 'i'm gon call channel 5 and report this'..'this ain't right' bs..i went home..and i will NEVER PAY for an after party for the rest of my life..i don't care if he brings the commodores with lionel richie!!!!
after the soundcheck and the show..i was done..because i knew some paisley park bs would go down..why would prince do an aftershow in little ol' cowtown?

Prince had two afterparties in Chicago and played at neither one. I had a chance to bypass the line at one of them but didn't even bother showing up...and here's why.

He's just unpredictable. And I really don't think he has the energy for 2 shows a night more than once a week anymore. He just doesn't do it.

Here's my advice based on what I did for the Chicago shows:

1. Go home or to your htoel first if it's not too far away from the party location.

2. Get the location's phone #.

3. Start calling every half an hour and ask if he has shown up, if there are instruments on the stage, and if they guarantee he will play.

All in that order. I have a job and can't waste precious sleep waitng for someone who might not even show.

ANOTHER BIT OF ADVICE: beware of the word "afterparty"!

Official or not, afterparty usually means he'll pop in & out.

Seek out aftershows & be cautious even then - he could wail for hours or play 1 song & be OUT. You never know...

Seems to me if he's playing for 2+ hours for the show AND he has back to back dates (the dude is traveling up the yang, y'all), I wouldn't bet on an aftershow...
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

I think the problem is that people confuse afterparty and aftershow. If the announcement says "afterparty" Prince is not going to play.

If the announcement says "aftershow" then there will be a show, and you will have to pay to get in. Prince has to pay his band members when they play. That's why the cost of an aftershow is higher than the cost of an afterparty.

An afterparty is just going to a club, dancing, and listening to music. Prince will walk through, or stand up on a balcony, or visit the DJ booth, sometimes he will shake hands. But that's it. I have learned from experience not to expect anything else.

By the way, he cancelled the sound check for the Sunday Chicago show. I was at the Saturday sound check so the Sunday cancellation didn't bother me. But there were Chicago premium members who were very disappointed because they couldn't get tickets to the show and then the soundcheck was cancelled, too. So, they basically got NOTHING from their membership.

Going to an after party hoping Prince will be there is always a gamble, sometimes it pays off big time, sometimes you lose.
At the first celebration I saw a secuirty guy (a real shit head) let 4 people in, inexchange for a nice handful of $$$. They didn't have passes, lived in Minni and had been told by someone that Prince was going to play that night. I was more than a little pissed off, but then Prince cann't keep his eye on every thing thats going on. That's life.

Yeah, I have to admit... the soundcheck was off the hook. Prince seemed extremely comfortable talking to the fans up close and personal.

Someone asked if the fans were looking at the fans performing When You Were Mine on stage or where they looking at Prince looking at the fans on stage. At first, I think everybody was just kind of in shock and everybody wathced Prince at first, but once Prince moved a few rows behind all the fans sitting in the seats, everybody's attention was just focused on comedy on stage. But actually, they did do pretty good.

Afterwards, Prince made a joke about one of the guys singing on stage who happened to be sort of a heavy-set guy, but was singing in falsetto. He said something like "I thought we were going to get Barry White... instead we got Halle Berry!" It was funny.

And as someone else said, Prince did an absolutely BEAUTIFUL rendition of Dolphin. The ballad kicked in and Prince and the band were playing it for a minute or two. Then all of sudden he starts singing "How beautiful do the words have to be..." and it was like huh? Is that dolphin?
All I know is that I would love to have copy of that version.

Due to time constraints I didn't really have much of a chance to go into
details of the concert.

Set was pretty similar to previous shows with the addition of "The Ride" and
deletion of "Another Star." Prince spoke quite a bit during the gig, saying
at one point that this show was "for musicians." It definitely is NOT the
typical Prince concert, very few theatrics...he was either playing guitar or
keyboards on just about every track. At one point he even asked everyone to
sit down because he just wanted to play for us! To this point I agree with
Alan Leeds' assessment, this is much more like a "rehearsed aftershow" in
feel.

The crowd seemed to be into it, even though the majority probably didn't
recognize most of the songs. Highlights were definitely "1+1+1=3" and "La La
La Means I Love You," which was simply beautiful. "The Rainbow Children"
material sounds good live, for the most part. The only time he used the
altered voice was during "TRC," "Muse," and the beginning of "1+1+1=3."

Very little preaching. During "Anna Stesia" he made reference to September
11th and the discussion he had with NPGMC members during the soundcheck. He
then mentioned he finds comfort in the Bible. That was really it in terms of
religious overtones.

By the way, he seemed so accessible and normal during the soundcheck.
Casually walking around, drinking a cup of tea, shaking hands with fans, and
just chatting. I couldn't help but think that this was the same guy who used
to isolate himself behind a wall of bodyguards just a few years ago. Say
what you will about his religious leanings, it has definitely made him more
mellow which is a nice change. He is actually pretty charming in
person...makes me wonder if he sometimes comes off wrong when he is
interviewed by journalists?

I haven't been to any of the other ONA shows except the Columbus show, so I don't know if Prince does something different with the song or not in other shows, but actually Prince did in fact play "Another Star". But after hearing it myself, I now realize why some people are unsure about the song's inclusion in the set. Another Star is a cover of the same song by Stevie Wonder. In the Columbus show, it segued into the Santana Medley. While there are lyrics to the Stevie Wonder song, Prince did not sing the lyrics, he just played the main riff.

Hope that clarifies any confusion over this so-called "new" song called "Another Star" - it's actually just an instrumental cover.

He had 2 bodyguards protecting him at Chicago soundcheck, no handshakes, no fan jamming. Some fat chick asked him about Habibi. He shrugged and didn't answer.

The show in Columbus was funky!!!Prince and the NPG did it again.I really had a great time Prince Singing,Playing, and looking 2 fine!.This was my 2nd prince concert, went to the 2001 aka "Greatest hits show".I loved that show as well. This time he did other songs, that he has not performed in a while.Or has not performed at all.I knew some people were not happy because he did not sing his"signature song" Purple rain.I think some people have been standin' in the rain 2 long, would ya bust out some parade,SOTT,lovesexy, emancapation, and the rainbow children. To finally see what they have been missin' out on.Can't wait till he comes back to Columbus!
