2 alibomaye :
eye don't think Navarro sucks... Eye think Frusciante's way of playing is more in the Red Hot STYLE than Navarro's, don't kill him cause he's really a monster on guitar wink

I actually managed to read the article at a Barnes and Noble - was kind of short on cash. Anyway, it's a pretty decent article that not only chronicles funk guitar, but funk rock guitar as well. They do a sidebar interview with Ernie Isley - no new revelations, just the same 'ol "So how was it having Jimi Hendrix live in the same house?" Still, it was cool to see Ernie getting some props. And Prince only gets mentioned in the last paragraph. It doesn't say much, except that he's perhaps the most successful post-Hendrix musician as far as funk goes and that among his other skills, he's displayed impressive guitar chops, most notably in Purple Rain. The article was too short in my opinion - there could've been some mention of the late, great, Roger Troutman of Zapp, the guitar player from Lakeside (they really rip it up live) and of course, at least a casual mention of Jesse Johnson. There's also Tony Maiden of Rufus and Dwayne Higgins of Toni Tone Tony (don't know the order of the Tonys), among others.

Stevie Ray Vaughan was also funky as hell. I remember Jesse Johnson giving him props in a special commorative issue of Guitar World shortly after he passed on.

To Gustavo - I'm a big fan of Steve Vai's Flexible cds. I love the experimentation. It shows that he's more than just a "big-haired wanker", as some have called him. I"m also reading a bio of Frank Zappa - one of my favorite solos is his guitar solo on "Montana". Awesome!

I also recommend anything by Eric Gales and Joe Bonamassa. Oh yeah, Jake E. Lee had a band called Badlands. They were mainly in the vein of 70's hard rock (in a good way), but they had a lot of funk overtones. Jake is also a fan of Prince and a heck of a guitar player in his own right.

I just love these guitar threads...
