Lorna Nelson has gotten some money from her father's estate. Her father, John L. Nelson, who died in August, was also the father of Prince. Lorna went to court to challenge Prince's handling of the estate. "We were disappointed that we had to file a motion [to get the money]," said Mike Padden, her attorney. "Three of the heirs had received their money three months before. We were happy, however, that Prince and his sister, Tyka Nelson, gave up their rights to the early distribution. [That] means the children from Mr. Nelson's first marriage received more money than they would have, because funds were divided by four instead of six." Padden refused to say how much money Lorna received. When I looked at Carver County District Court documents last week I saw an unsigned order indicating that Lorna was to receive an amount in the high five figures. That was much better than the $200 Prince initially claimed was left in his father's estate. Documents filed in court by Prince's lawyers state, "Prince loved and cared for his father. [Prince] provided in-home nursing care for his father throughout the time of his death and afterward volunteered to settle the estate of his father." Nelson did not leave a will. Prince also waived his right to any fees for handling his father's estate.}}}

Other questions

As for the huge discrepancy in the amount of money Lorna first was told was in Nelson's estate, one of Prince's lawyers wrote: "[Prince] did not know and had no authority to [undertake] an investigation to determine the value of his father's assets and liabilities. . . . He learned in proving up the assets that the estate was valued in excess of $300,000, and he contacted his sister Norrine to advise her of that information." As for my reading of court documents, still undetermined is what will happen to funds from the possible sale of Nelson's musical instruments. Those instruments, especially a piano, would fetch a hefty sum at auction if Prince had learned to play music on them.

Condolences to Prince

My sympathies to Prince in the death of his mother, Mattie Baker. There won't be a sadder day for most of us. It must be even tougher to lose both parents within six months. Baker also leaves a daughter, Tyka Nelson, another son, Omarr Baker, and her second husband, Hayward Baker.

The passing of one's parent is never a easy thing esp this part of it, I hope it all works out for their family in peace.

At times I wonder what will happen to Prince's vast musical catalogue when he passes away too.

Jimi Hendrix's family finally came together and got back his music for the publics consumption.

I wonder what will happen with Prince?

Hopefully things get claered up!

It was very generous of Prince and Tyka Nelson to waive their rights to the early distribution of their father's assets and let their four half siblings have it. It was especially generous of Tyka because she has children to support and probably needs the money.

Losing a parent and then having to fight with your siblings over money can really strain family relationships.

I will say a prayer for the family.

I guess the absence of out-of-the-blue sideswipes at Prince over the dumbest of things is CJ's way of showing her condolences to Prince right now...sad that it took both his parents passing away before she could bring herself to stop for awhile...
