TRC Review in Humo (Dutch magazine) Finally a TRC review in "Humo"
Before I start the (large) translation of the dutch text, something you should know about "Humo": It's a very critical magazine, which doesn't give so much positive reviews. So the album has to be really good to get a positive one ! Here's the translation (for as far as possible): "He who never knows if he has scored during tablesoccer, has released a new album. And already after the first listening, we could assure a friend and Prince-fan: buy it, it's safe. In the meanwhile we can tell you even more: it's a very good one ! However, on the internet we had heard the wildest rumors about this release: Prince would have gone completely nuts and had released a conceptalbum about Jesus en wouldn't have no more sex at all ! (at least during the week). Something is true, but by far not everything. Prince is nowadays an active member of the "Jehovah's Witness" and he really wants everybody to know. So what, we continue doing what we always did and don't pay to much attention to his lyrics. Prince always made his most genius albums around a thin concept. (for example Purple Rain and Parade). What the internet didn't tell us, is that he nowadays finally likes to let us know that he can play ! That means that a song like "Sensual Everafter" is even enjoyable even if you would find the composition bull: just listen to the truly brilliant play of the guitarplayer Prince and the bassplayer Prince and forget all your worries. Also "Family Name" is a slow starter, but during the long prelude pay attention to the bass (signed Prince) and you won't be bored. And what the man does on his guitar in "The Everlasting now" is building a bridge between Steve Vai and John Lee Hooker ! "The Rainbow Children" reads like a crusade passing all his musicteachers: Stevie Wonder and Miles Davis in the opener, Marvin Gaye in the first minute of "Digital Garden", James Brown in "The Work" and even Isaac Hayes in "Mellow". This album is by far more various than it would seem at the first place, but it just isn't a masterpiece like he made in the eighties. About half of the songs could have been 2 minutes shorter, and the intermezzo's during which he speaks with a "Darth Father" voice are better off in the trashcan of his Imac. We also couldn't hear anything that could sound like a single, but maybe that says more about the radio than about Prince. The Rainbow Children isn't officially released overhere, but can be found very easy in importstores, what makes it a few Euro's more expensive, but we shouldn't doubt ! Small Body, Big Man !!! So, that's about it. For a review in Humo, I can assure you that it's very positive ! Certainly because they are making him look like a fool for several years already. Keep on bustin' !! | |
