Park Jam Review #3 Very enjoyable time at Paisley last night (this morning really!) I got there at about midnight and there were just a few cars in the parking lot. I noticed a few folks were inside the doors leading into what is now the "NPG Music Club" room so I left my coat in the car and headed in. There were just four people waiting (a couple of the Paisley hardcore regulars were in the inner lobby already, I guess cause the staff knows em by now or something they let them in early) After about five minutes they opened the doors, and let us in. No cover charge! Hung out chatting with some folks for an hour and a half and at about 1:30 I could tell it was gonna start soon. Sure enough Rhonda, John Blackwell, and the new guty Renalto take the stage and shortly thereafter Prince comes out. He was dressed in white boots that came up to about his knees, they may have said NPG on em, I'm not sure. black tights or pants and a huge oversized Minnesota Vikings jersey that said "Moss" on the back. He was also wearing a little cap on his head with just a few wisps of hair coming out.
On to the music! I hope someone else can describe it better than I can but it was a great mixture of being a jam, but also with some structure. They did actual songs but a lot of improve. First song was instrumental,I recognized it but can't come up with the title. Anyone? Oh, I forgot that of course MACEO was jamming all night and got his piece in many times on that Maceo sax! Next was a long extended jam on "The Work part 1" I think it went 10 or 15 minutes. Next was "Muse 2 the Pharoh" Price had a lyric booklet and so these were all done with most of the lyrics. On this one he said "the opposite of NATO is MACEO!" Prince alternated between a lot of great guitar jamming and playing his keyboards. Next was "1+1+1 is 3" SOmewhere in here Mike Scott came up and played guitar and he and Prince had a guitar duel. Prince was in a good mood all night, at one poit Mike was playing guitar and Prince was playing with the foot pedals. Another time Maceo was jamming and turned around expecting Prince to do something but Prince had left the stage so Maceo and the others had to just improve until he came back up to direct the flow. Another time the band was jamming and he left the stage, all of a sudden I hear some guy right next to me yell "Maceo" and then I realize the guy is Prince! OK, a big surprise was "Other Side of the Pillow" from "The Truth" CD, didn't expect that! There were videos playing over the stage during the whole performance and at one point Prince improvised on the guitar along to the videos of people doing factory work or something... hard to describe but great, at one point it sounded like he was playing dueling banjos! Show ended with "Family Name" and "The Everlasting Now" They played from about 1:45 to 3:05 so about an 80 minute show. Band was great. John Blackwell is a monster drummer, RHonda on bass, Ranato is a lot more jazzy on keys which is perhaps the direction Price wants to go. Maceo of course was fantastic and Prince was all over guitar, keyboards, vocals etc. Everyone seemed to be having so much fun! Perhaps 150-200 folks were in attendance. So cool to hear more of the Rainbow Children live! | |
