Review of The Vault in Toronto Star (From the Toronto Star, Saturday, August 21, 1999 - Page K8-9)
Prince The Vault - Old Friends 4 Sale (Warner) Yup, you can call him Prince again. For now. The Purple One has ponied up these 10 previously unreleased songs to fulfill a contractual obligation freeing him from the Warener label once and for all. Recorded between 1984 and 1995 at various studios around the world, they make a jazz-oriented collection (in stores Tuesday) that again underscores his remarkably prolific output. This is a guy, after all, noted for recording five songs for every one put on an album. The tunes on The Vault include an extended remix of "She Spoke 2 Me", featured on the Spike Lee Girl 6 soundtrack; "When the Lights Go Down" a lovely, meandering ballad, and two tracks, "The Rest Of My Life" and "My Little Pill", taken from a musical Prince abandoned. Clocking in at just under 40 minutes, this CD is recommended but is likely to interest diehard fans only. - Betsy Powell | |
