TRC Review in Mojo

Mojo magazine review of TRC:

"Apocalyptic jazz and gospel-fuelled concept album, anyone?

Imagine War Of The Worlds meets Godspell meets Miles meets Sly. Add some Old Testament imagery, an operatic piss-take, some Santana licks, and a vari-speeded basso profundo narrator who sounds like Jimi circa And The Gods Made Love. Bizarre as it sounds, that's the gist of Prince's 22nd album, a sprawling, instrumentally dazzling work which all but spurns pop songwriting. Now witnessing for Jehovah, his Purpleness tones down the Scarlet Pussy factor and preaches with renewed vigour, casting God as The Wise One, Satan as The Resistor, and MLK as himself.

But Prince has never been the most convincing of evangelists, and so it is here, the album's silliness detracting from its message. All that said, it's still his strongest record in years. The ideas sack is much fuller than on Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, and epic closing track Last December oozes panache."--James McNair
