Report on Sheila E. Birthday Party

Sheila E.'s birthday bash was a smash! Well, it was almost 3 hours of jamz (everything from latin jazz, Stevie Wonder,Randy Crawford, Brenda Russell, PFunk, James Brown, some gospel and of course some Prince). Since the show was basically a 3 our jam session I'll relay some of the highlights. A smooth version of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry Bout A Thing" was hot with Dawnn Lewis guesting on vocals. Some other guests included Michael DeLorenzo,Raphael Saadiq,Tommy Davidson and Kiki(from Showtime at the Apollo). Kat Dyson was killing it on guitar throughout the show. Other highlights included two drum solos by Sheila. One of them lasting at least ten minutes (and yes, she can still play the skins off of those drums!!). There was a Prince medley of Kiss, When Doves Cry and Girls + Boys, which drove all of the Prince-heads crazy. There was a moment when of group in the audience broke into the chorus of "Oh Sheila" which was absolutely hilarious...In the middle of the show everyone sang Happy Birthday and Sheila's mother came onstage to sing a song she taught Sheila when she was three years old(this was a touching moment). The show funked back up with a PFunk(gets funked up!!)jam which included America, the Transmississippi Rap which sequed into Holly Rock with coaxing from the audience. Sheila mentioned that she could not remember the words to that one. She finished the show with another amazing drum solo which by the end of the night wore everyone out. I will say this much, a lot of people couldn't hang only the hardcore hung in there for the entire 3 hours of funk!!! Sheila will be back on March 21 + 23 with a performance with her father, Pete Escovedo, this will be a show not to be missed . Peace.
